Financial cost and prep for 2016

988

I reckoned Champions League participation was worth circa £22m to Celtic. By contrast, Europa League football will be worth less than a quarter of that. Ancillary income, such as retail and kiosk sales, will also suffer.

The challenge now is to improve the team without that income. This should not be impossible. Malmo managed it, and we’re not in a situation where the bank is hammering at the door. But what should be clear, is that the next five days represent the best chance to strengthen the team for next August’s qualifiers. There’s a notion that the biggest games of our season come early, but we’ve 11 months to plan for 2016’s biggest games.

Three things to remind you about:

Golfers: buy a raffle ticket for £1 to win a round of golf FOR FOUR PEOPLE at the magnificent Aberdour course in Fife. Competition ends on Saturday, get your tickets here!!! It’s offered by Taggsybhoy, in support of the Foundation.

Aberdour

There’s a Mary’s Meals collection from 1pm on the Celtic Way ahead of the game on Saturday. Ideally we’re looking for backpacks, but handtowels (the school kitchens you paid for have handwashing facilities and each child is given their own handtowel), pencils, rulers, etc.

If the kids got new kit for starting school last week, dig out the old stuff and bring it along.

Magners have kindly donated two Premium Seats in the Jock Stein Stand for Saturday’s games. You can win the tickets by answering this question:

Who is Celtic’s top scorer this season?

Player’s surname in the SUBJECT line of your email to celticquicknews@gmail.com . Competition closes at 22:00 TONIGHT, so not a lot of time to enter.

No call today for a donation, go stick a £1 in Taggsy’s raffle instead. Thanks.

  1. Let’s say we get rid of PL and get a cheaper option. Do you really think £500-700k added to squad budget is going to turn us into a CL team?

  2. Mac, I dont know the specifics on Barnsley – (honestly) I thought they were still in the championship – league one would shock me a little but only a little – with the filter and parachute payemtns them may have got until recently I wouldnt rule it out – but if you are asking do I have the igures – no

  3. Ronny being attacked on all sides now. Mirror poll saying 75% want Ronny out. Disgusting

He needs support from us as well as criticism

  4. so perhaps rather than wholely agreeing with him perhaps I should have said it wouldnt surprise me if there were aspects of the finances that were similar

  5. coolmore mafia on

I would expect us to earn:

approx 5 million from last 32 Europa run

    approx 10 million from VVD

Approx 4 million from Wanyama sell on if he goes to Spurs for £20 million minus sell on to belgian side.

That’s almost 19 million to rebuild the side with. lennon did it with aiden McGeady fee.

If we can’t do it with that and progress from the europa league group stage, then they ought to forget it.

i would agree with you it is time for a change in our dynamic at the top.10 years at the top for PL is well experienced enough to to bring in and nurture our next CEO,A new FD maybe??.i would take this transistion over a 2 to 3 year period ensuring the sound and stable way our board is run continues.set out a plan.i say this as stable and well run clubs like ours must plan for these strategic placements/events

Another facet i would look at is a Communications director with a particular accent on bringing Celtic into the Digital age,as always we can improve our interaction with our fans.

I am as vexed as anyone about our result,if people think our club will remain static as a result of it they do not know Celtic

you are correct Hebcelt there is a lot more fluidity to our team now with players going out on loan and getting(and hopefully improving) them as players, all i ask is the same dynamic approach is more apparent to us,by getting our message out,at board level as well as at team level.

    maybe catch you on saturday.

    Thanks for your studied reply

is the £125 k the net figure? its all about margins, we’ve already been told by RD that we need to trim the squad and supplement with youths, which i am not against, so any savings or extra income would be welcome. So any additional income from all the wages saved etc ontop of more fans at the gate must have an impact.

How many of the board dont sit on any other boards or have other boards, why not limit the remuneration, afterall theyre all supporters, well except the Chairman, but including the CEO?

I think the vast majority of fans, if not all, have redefined winning, winning is making the Champions League group stages, we all understand that and except that we’ve little chance of winning it, however, our current business model (not football model as it never comes first) doesnt seem to be working as the qualification success rate will show.

Here comes the crux then, for us to change there has to be a willingness and sadly that is where the problem lies. I posted a few days ago that we as a club and business are totally inflexible in everything we do and that doesnt look like its gonna change soon.

  10. @CELTIC MAC

“Context or no, you do not really believe that do you?”

Know it for a fact mate!

In 2014 the English Championship went nearly £1,000,000,000 (1billion) in debt across it’s 22 teams.

Here are some of the team data, from publicly obtainable sources:

    Blackburn Rovers –

    Wage bill £36.6m

    Net debt £54.5m

    Bolton –

    Wage bill £37.4m

    Net debt: £163.8m

    Brighton

    Wage bill £21m

    Net debt: £51m

    Cardiff

    Wage bill £32.8m

    Net debt: £85.3m

    Hull

    Wage bill £25.9m

    Net debt £72.2m

    Wolves

    Wage bill £31.1m

    Net debt £36m

The BOTTOM team in the EPL this season gets £90m simply for tuning up. They then get 3 years of parachute payments totalling £90m (40, 30, 20). This excludes Cup games, sponsorship etc – estimated to be about £30m more to a Prem team (according to the Guardian) and about £7-12m more the Championship teams (from sportsinteligence.com).

We get 2m a year for winning the league. Cups bring us almost no income.

So yes, our Wage Bill is comparable, if not smaller than most English 2nd division and 3rd division clubs.

  11. Weeminger,

I do not think it is the financial impact of PL that is the issue, it is his effect on football policies.

Personally, i do not know if it is time to change theCEO and or the manager. I do believe that fundamental changes are needed because we are seriously underachieving.

Yesterday i called for an external audit of certain functions of the club. I still feel that some such action is needed.

I completely agree. Change is the hardest thing in the world to manage, but if you don’t mind me quoting my own Harvard speech “The only change I fear is unmanaged change”.

I want to just applaud Paul67 though as well, we have to plan for next August starting today. Except I think we now make a loss in Europa League seasons if we don’t have player sales to compensate. So you can at least half that £19M.

  17. Pogmathonyahun aka Laird of the Smiles on

I’m afraid successive managers since big Jock must look upon the European Cup as some sort of poisoned chalice as opposed to a trophy.

I read the most ridiculous comment, this morning, that suggested that the SPFL was irrelevant and that the treble was a joke. Well I’m afraid to tell you that is our bread and butter. Do we expect to only play only a dozen games a season as if it was our holy right just to compete in the Champions League?

I’m as pissed off as the next Celtic supporter but I’d like to think that I have not lost touch with reality. There are some guys on here with a serious anti-Celtic agenda!!

Sadly its DD that pulls the strings and if he’s bothered to check im certain that he’ s not interested in making that change, whilst we are mere peanuts in comparison to the rest of his portfolio im sure if we still produce a modest dividend for him then he will be satisfied.

If we do realise where we are today, in football terms, then our “lets see if we can fluke it” gameplan has just cost us players that may have made a difference to next years qualifying, not to say that those we may recruit (though im not optimistic) may also make a positive difference too.

The first step towards change is awareness (are they aware). The second step is acceptance (there is only acceptance of the current business model)

Sadly this is where we are at, a PLC (club, team) going nowhere for the foreseeable future

  21. I heard he was dead on

Being already depressed having returned from Malmo I find you’re posting even more depressing. Football without fans is…. not important.

I find it depressing that you think that it IS all about the money. You could recruit 1,000 or 1,000,000 more ‘fans’ via tv but if the club isn’t getting the income from that then it is someone else earning.

You haven’t commented on Germany yet where clubs must be owned by supporters, where you can enter a game for 10 euro and where money does get spent in ground.

However, if we keep taking your views as hard gospel then there is a simple solution. Celtic set up in a different country by acquiring a club there. No fans won’t be a problem since they don’t matter and off we go. TV is king (apparently).

In Malmo there were 20,000 passionate fans creating a great atmosphere. Far better than any I’ve experienced at the Camp Nou which has a poor atmosphere. I’d much rather compete in that environment than the sterile Man City one.

But, all that doesn’t excuse the right analysis. Malmo with 20k fans, £20m budget (which will now treble next year with the same 20k fans) have been able to get better value per £1 than CFC. That is true of other qualifiers.

We are paying more per player, getting more income (significantly) and getting a poorer return. It is perfectly possible for Celtic to acquire the team of any of these clubs (in theory financially). We are squandering resources and the people in charge of the resources never seem to be held to account?

If football is all about armchair pounds and so called fans who never actually go to a game then it is a business that is done.

MALMO’s manager did his homework.CELTIC defenders pass ball about between them then ball goes to midfield and then up the field.so he played 4 3 3.front 3 were in about the defence making it hard for them to find midfielder.as soon as they won the ball there was 6 players running at CELTIC defence.

I agree with a lot of what you say (although I’m not sure what your sources are for some of the facts and figures). But there is a hell of a lot we can be doing to improve things. It might seem like radical change but it’s common sense.

Wages – get them in line with our European competition. We pay far too much for what we get, it’s been going on for years and was caused by us competing for players with Rangers. That’s no longer the case so we should have used the opportunity to change this. Our average wage shouldn’t be anywhere near £17k/week if that’s true. Our top players could earn £20k/week, youth/projects £1-5k, first team regulars £5-12k. Our average should have been brought down more drastically. Players we sign are probably on £4-5k a week when we buy them – why should we triple their wage (or more) right off the bat?

TV – refuse to allow our games to be shown. Next time the TV deal comes up for renewal just say NO! We don’t need it, it’s a false economy and we have more power in things than they’ll have us believe. We could sell our own rights or have Celtic TV available to subscription. Even without televised games our gates would likely increase.

Fitness/Stength – Even with our supposed fitness regime I would say our current crop still fall short and Scottish football in general is not filled with athletes. Look at most other leagues and players look like atheletes, they’re lean and quick or they are powerful and strong. In Scotland that doesn’t seem to be the case. It might not improve ability on the ball but it will help win games.
