Financial cost and prep for 2016

988

I reckoned Champions League participation was worth circa £22m to Celtic. By contrast, Europa League football will be worth less than a quarter of that. Ancillary income, such as retail and kiosk sales, will also suffer.

The challenge now is to improve the team without that income. This should not be impossible. Malmo managed it, and we’re not in a situation where the bank is hammering at the door. But what should be clear, is that the next five days represent the best chance to strengthen the team for next August’s qualifiers. There’s a notion that the biggest games of our season come early, but we’ve 11 months to plan for 2016’s biggest games.

Three things to remind you about:

Golfers: buy a raffle ticket for £1 to win a round of golf FOR FOUR PEOPLE at the magnificent Aberdour course in Fife. Competition ends on Saturday, get your tickets here!!! It’s offered by Taggsybhoy, in support of the Foundation.

Aberdour

There’s a Mary’s Meals collection from 1pm on the Celtic Way ahead of the game on Saturday. Ideally we’re looking for backpacks, but handtowels (the school kitchens you paid for have handwashing facilities and each child is given their own handtowel), pencils, rulers, etc.

If the kids got new kit for starting school last week, dig out the old stuff and bring it along.

Magners have kindly donated two Premium Seats in the Jock Stein Stand for Saturday’s games. You can win the tickets by answering this question:

Who is Celtic’s top scorer this season?

Player’s surname in the SUBJECT line of your email to celticquicknews@gmail.com . Competition closes at 22:00 TONIGHT, so not a lot of time to enter.

No call today for a donation, go stick a £1 in Taggsy’s raffle instead. Thanks.

    Excellent. Mental picture,worked a treat!

  2. Neganon – I’m not sure that is the starting point if you want rid of them. There needs to be a ‘popular’ feeling, organised and expressed, that the supporters want them gone and want a change in the structure of the club – this needs to be articulated and argued first and the support won over. People like me, who would be sympathetic to a change in the structure to something akin to the German or the Barca model need to be convinced that it can be done and that enough of us want it.

If you get the popular support you demonstrate it and look to negotiate – after that if it doesn’t work out then you boycott.

Simply calling on people to stop supporting the club only weakens what you get if you win and damages what is left behind if you don’t and the very things you hate now will be implemented with more vigour than ever to save the pennies lost.

Billy Bhoy. I believe where we are going is that the Rangers will be in the SPL next season and Celtic will sell considerably more season tickets than we have this season. We will be guaranteed at least two 60,000 crowds at Parkhead . As far as Europe is concerned nothing much will have changed we will be dumped out by the first half decent team we meet. The board will be happy as will the happy clappers. H.H.

I seem to see things differently than most on here ….

winning or losing is not the be all and the end all … I am less upset that we lost … s**t happens …. I am more upset by (i) the manner in which we played and lost, and (ii) the same errors/substandard level of football is being repeatedly served season after season ….

for me the priority is seeing us play good smart football …. but I also believe that if we play smart good football the fans will be happy, and, I believe, the wins will, largely, take care of themselves ….

at the end of the day, it is Celtic Football Club … the football – not the bottom line – has to be the priority ..

but I dont think we have to break the bank to accomplish that …. I personally think we have brought in good players …. some of whom are still here … too many good players are coming to Celtic park and struggling, but doing okay elsewhere (before and/or after) …. that tells me the problem isn’t with our recruiting …. it is what we are doing with the players while they are here that is the problem….

This will surprise some, but, by many measures, PL has not done a terrible job … he has ensured that there is money to pay the bills each month (in football today, that is not a given, so credit where credit is due) ….

where he has been terrible is (1) creating a divide between the club and many of the fans, (ii) communicating with fans (the Club is almost contemptuous of the fans), and (iii) in failing to ensure that the right people were in place to ensure success ….

this goes back to the earlier point about financials … had he been the architect of a better team (including bringing in a manager) more fans would show up, and we would achieve more in Europe, which would increase revenue.

It really isn’t that complicated … . putting out a decent team doesn’t have to cost the moon (we are routinely getting pumped by teams on a fraction of our budget)… but, if we do, I believe that the rewards (in the trophy cabinet AND on the balance sheet) will be enormous.

but it starts and ends with putting out a better team on the pitch each week …

  6. Joe Filippis Haircut on

WEEBOBBYCOLLINS. I agree all the fist pumping when we beat SPL cannon fodder is demeaning. H.H.

  7. Roberttressel you are of course correct.

I think the Celtic that we believe we loved has just about been destroyed by Lawwell and the current board. They have helped persecute the Celtic support, wantonly taken part in corruption and are failing us miserably on the field.

And laughingly, laughingly we are told we are the most ethical club in the world.

If it weren’t so tragic it would be highly comedic.

But the thing is, as you can see from Paul’s posts, our board really do think they are marvellous. They haven’t even let it enter their heads that they are making a mess of it.

And I’m afraid that cqn is simply a mouthpiece for all their propaganda.

I can’t get angry about it, for over a decade I’ve watched this farce unfold. We were thrown the biggest opportunity ever to free ourselves from the shackles of bigotry and racism, but Lawwell and co believe it’s all good for business.

If we join in with it we are playing willing victims.

    It’s quite frankly disgusting.

  8. Yet still they come.

The happy clappers, the balance sheet glee cub, the PL AstroTurf.

Just what will it take to get change on the agenda?

The Irish Raj is an absentee landlord paying PL to mind the shop and take the flack.

PL is a second rate property bean counter who couldn’t spot a growth agenda unless it was wrapped up in a multi-year bonus arrangement.

    We are on the slide.

The support is drifting away and yet still they clap.

    What next?

Stick and wait for the inevitable collapse?

Or do we demand change and work towards a club others look up to?

  9. The bottom line is…..

I honestly cannot belive what I read there…

  11. Billy Bhoy, What evidence have you that Peter Lawell was responsible for signing the list of players you mention. The shite going on about Peter Lawell is nonsensical, He does not own the Club he is a CEO answerable to the Board who have a duty of care to the Shareholders. That is how a PLC works, Peter has a powerful influence within the Club and I am sure he signs off on overall total budgets but I very much doubt if he has any input whatever in what individual player is signed.

“It’s Karma for putting black guys in defence – yes I said it ! ”

Pathetic. I don’t think Lilian Thuram, (off the top of my head), was daydreaming when he won League titles, League cups, Uefa cup, a World Cup and a European Championship. I could go on and give numerous examples but I don’t like arguing with arrogant old clowns who “KNOW” it all so I’ll leave it there ya daft racist.

Doncaster interviewed. Funnily no questions about a 16 team league. And yet it was all the rage only six months ago. You know, when Sevco were third in the Championship…..

  15. Corkcelt Lawwell does all the signings. Or don’t you believe NL? How come we signs Craig Gordon when we didn’t have a manager?

BGX I said it was good news that house was getting punted. I just laughed at the SNP telling us all how fab he is.

  16. For those interested in the Europa League seedings…

Qarabag’s unexpected victory – at least from a coefficient point of view – means that Young boys drop out, and St.Etienne replace them in Pot 3… Qarabag will now replace St E. in Pot 4.

Celtic – as things stand – have a 37.5% chance of drawing a French team in Pot 3

    (Monaco, Bordeaux, St.Etienne)

For example, the same reason Manchester Utd signed Luke Shaw before Louis Van Gaal was even appointed.

It’s the same at most big clubs there is a ‘football hierarchy’ that make signings, not always the manager’s pick

e.g. Berget was directly from Ronny.

As was the case with all of Neil Lennon’s three Amidos ( Balde Boeriggter Pukki ) he had the players recommended, but he had the final say.

NFL has also publicly defended Celtic’s signing policy, even after he fell out with the board.

Very well thought out and reasoned analysis. Agree with pretty much all your points, particularly re having one or two “old heads”.

Only thing I’d say is that keeping players at the club for longer isn’t as easy as it sounds. First if they let their contract run down we get nothing. Also if they are unhappy then it would likely affect their performance. And possible also create a bit of unrest in the dressing room.
