Financial cost and prep for 2016

988

I reckoned Champions League participation was worth circa £22m to Celtic. By contrast, Europa League football will be worth less than a quarter of that. Ancillary income, such as retail and kiosk sales, will also suffer.

The challenge now is to improve the team without that income. This should not be impossible. Malmo managed it, and we’re not in a situation where the bank is hammering at the door. But what should be clear, is that the next five days represent the best chance to strengthen the team for next August’s qualifiers. There’s a notion that the biggest games of our season come early, but we’ve 11 months to plan for 2016’s biggest games.

Three things to remind you about:

Golfers: buy a raffle ticket for £1 to win a round of golf FOR FOUR PEOPLE at the magnificent Aberdour course in Fife. Competition ends on Saturday, get your tickets here!!! It’s offered by Taggsybhoy, in support of the Foundation.

Aberdour

There’s a Mary’s Meals collection from 1pm on the Celtic Way ahead of the game on Saturday. Ideally we’re looking for backpacks, but handtowels (the school kitchens you paid for have handwashing facilities and each child is given their own handtowel), pencils, rulers, etc.

If the kids got new kit for starting school last week, dig out the old stuff and bring it along.

Magners have kindly donated two Premium Seats in the Jock Stein Stand for Saturday’s games. You can win the tickets by answering this question:

Who is Celtic’s top scorer this season?

Player’s surname in the SUBJECT line of your email to celticquicknews@gmail.com . Competition closes at 22:00 TONIGHT, so not a lot of time to enter.

No call today for a donation, go stick a £1 in Taggsy’s raffle instead. Thanks.

  1. The Bottom Line is …………. on 27th August 2015 7:39 pm

People like Thurman and Abidal were world class. Not likely to rock up at Parkhead though, are they ?

But I thought “they” (black defenders) were “all daydreamers” (no exceptions). You’ve made sweeping generalizations based on players skin colour and that’s why your original post was rightly deleted and you’re getting pelters left right and center. It’s a shame because you did make some good points but that aspect of your post was way off the mark in my opinion. But what do I know compared to someone who has seen it all

    eh?

  2. THE SPFL has today announced a number of fixture changes due to Celtic’s involvement in the UEFA Europa League. The draw for the group stages of that competition takes place on Friday, when Celtic will find out who they face.

The new SPFL Premiership fixture dates are as follows:

    Sunday, September 20, 2015

    Celtic v Dundee

    KO: 3.00pm

    Sunday, October 25, 2015

    Celtic v Dundee United

    KO: 3.00pm

    Sunday, November 8, 2015

    Ross County v Celtic

    KO: 3.00pm

    Sunday, November 29, 2015

    Inverness Caley Thistle v Celtic

    KO: 3.00pm

    Sunday December 13, 2015

    St Johnstone v Celtic

    KO: 3.00pm

(Celtic Park 3pm kick-off times confirmed. Away kick-off times could be subject to change).

  3. What is the Stars on

So the bottom line suggests that signing black players is the problem.

He may have a point. However my view is that we should take the blacks and the Chinese but not the bloody irish.

Mel brooks couldn’t make it up CSC

Guys ignore the clown. He wants us to rise to his tripe.

You’re right of course. I’m sorry but I can’t stand that sort of thing. I quoted some of his posts in order to address some of the points made so I’ll happily see my replies taken down if deemed necessary.

  5. Rumours flying around we’ve sold Scepovic, for me he wasn’t given a proper chance.

I think Ronny deserves this Europa League campaign, but I’m starting to wonder if he is a good judge of a player?

    Just some examples…..

Callum McGregor was given a lucrative contract extension on a hand full of performances. Yet it was obvious that he was never the answer.

Not sure giving Commons a new deal was merited either.

Berget discarded but showed enough in both legs to suggest he would have done us a real turn.

Like Scepovic Bitton was frozen out until injuries forced Ronny’s hand. Perhaps more luck than judgement with him. I shudder to think we may have lost Nir too.

Griffiths similar to Bitton. It was anyone but him, even earlier this season preferring to start the ineffectual Ciftci. Only recently has he been selected as a first choice.

Limiting Liam Henderson’s opportunities to develop with Celtic by refusing to give the boy a chance ahead of Johansen or even Armstrong.

Choosing to start Mulgrew at LB v Malmo, is another highly questionable decision on his judgement of a players ability.

Who knows but maybe Scepovic or even Pukki before him could have done a job, if given more of a chance?

  6. Gearoid1998

Thankfully, Celtic fans react very quickly to racist trolling, it has to be removed swiftly.

It’s gone now anyway , but as I reckoned earlier, I doubt the person that posted it has.

    Good shout on Turnbull Hutton.

Celtic will like any other football club would, heavily promote the Europa League,

and derive much needed cash, given the continuing paucity of domestic revenue.

  7. Bottom Line bloke

Henke, Denayer, et al were good cos they were only ‘half black’?

    GTF 4ever racist skank.

Funny thing about white supremacists. They’re always the least supreme human beings known to man. Imagine Mr Muscle, only scrawnier!

  8. If We get 2bottles a Irn bru and a packet a cheese an onion for Scepovic, im breaking oot the Cab Sav, guys a Dud..Double Dud..

  9. Bobby

Point I was making is that its all relative. Missing out on the CL is a massive financial boot in the cojones to Celtic but I am sick to the pit of my stomach because I feel that that is where we should be as a club, playing the Real Madrids, Barcas and even the wee daddy teams from Engurlund who have never won the Big Cup.

We lament the league we are in and yet the Europa provides us with an opportunity to redress that to a certain extent with some sort of financial recompense. Maybe I’m grasping at straws, bit of a dreamer when it comes to the Tic certainly but the away game in the last 32 against Inter was one of the best away European trips I’ve been on. If offered the choice Champions League everyday of the week but I’m going to make the most of the chances that the Europa provides me with to preach the Glasgow Celtic gospel.

Is that HUN Neanderthal away yet????

  10. Ellboy

I agree with your comments on some of that.

Agree scepovic didn’t really get a chance. Would have Armstrong in the no10 position ahead of johannsen. And I don’t rate McGregor. And I’d rather Henderson and fisher weren’t on loan.

But bitton? He was frozen out for NFL for far longer than under RD.

Le Griff? I think RD had been the making of him.

And finally. HubrisCSC. Berget. He was hounded out by Us, the celtic support. Guilty of being Shoite. We dumped him. Then booed him at celtic park for playing against us? Go figure.

    ===

IMHO Nir was shown badly wanting on Tuesday, as were the majority of our players. I believe Nir is a decent SPFL player and ‘flatters to deceive’ playing in our wee league , again just my opinion. He has yet to convince me he can be an effective player in Europe for us. I know I am in a very small minority here.

As I’ve been saying all day there are few teams from more illustrious leagues or with a name who can go out tonight.

    Goodnight Timland.

Some of us work for a living.

Celtic aren’t all the could be,I’ll give you that, but where

would we be without them, they bind us together,so if

you can get yerselfs and any young yins up tae CP on

Saturday tae watch the green and white hoops.

  15. Oglach

I think Bitton is tidy player playing in the wrong position.

He is neat but at times to casual and gives away possession in dangerous areas.

He also is a poor tackler and often gets caught wrong side .

I think we need a stronger more experienced player in the holding role.

  18. The racist comment at 6.29pm has been removed by Paul. I sent him a text alerting him to the disgusting post. He’s at a school prize giving but deleted from his phone. Paul will advise on what further action he’s taken later on.

  19. Corkcelt

You can believe what you want, ask Bada Bing about Edson Brafheid.

It’s common knowledge about Hooper, Forster, Wilson, Mathews , Ledely

JP has scouted a few very good buys, but if the dross is weighed up against the diamonds, it far, far outweighs the positive.

Pedro should appoint a DoF, he should stick to doing what he is good at.

  20. Ellboy at 6:39 pm

“Why not speculate half of this amount earlier in the transfer window to aid our qualification. What’s the worst that could have happened? Still fail to qualify, sell Virgil, make £5 + mill & have one or two decent players to enjoy for the Europa league.

Who knows, one of these players may have gone on to be our next £10 mill + asset & given us another opportunity next summer to speculate again?

What are we left with now? Still likely to sell VVD & no doubts we will buy a few players to placate the fans.

What was the point in waiting?”

There are a few points are involved in waiting:-

    1) You play the qualifying tie with an experienced CL hardened player rather than a newbie- even a £5m newbie

    2) You now have a fit sellable asset, having completed the qualifying process (with only Europa qualification gained). Virgil could have got crocked during the qualifying ties.

    3) If he had been sold already but asked to play the qualifying ties, his mind may have been elsewhere (in fact, I suspect this scenario was at play with VVD) resulting in a loss of form.

    4) He might have changed his mind and stayed if he saw signs we were becoming a CL level team.

These contrary ideas are not hard to generate. There is usually an upside and a downside to any decision. Too many fans think things can only get better after a change. There are always 3 options- better, worse, and same old same old.

  21. JAMESGANG

Neil had more options in midfield & Bitton was only just in the door but he was given some opportunities, unlike Henderson under Deila. Ronny only gave Nir a chance when Mulgrew picked up an injury who’s to say when he would have played if Charlie had stayed fit? Though from the second he stepped in you could see the instant improvement Bitton brought to our midfield. It shouldn’t have taken an injury for the manager to see this.

Berget may have been a target from the support but ultimately it’s up to the manager to assess his ability. Letting him go, now looks like a foolish mistake & the actions of the support even more so.

  22. Scorer for the Danish Champions against Southampton tonight was our old friend..

    Morten Rasmussen..

Guys that couldn’t seem to hit a bovine gluteal muscle with an acoustic stringed instrument when at CP – are banging them elsewhere. All I need is to hear that Pukki and Balde are busting nets somewhere now.

  23. Having supported Celtic for over 50 years I have experienced very many disappointing results at home and away, including Europe, when expecting more. The players on the park on the night let us down, not ‘the board’
