Financial cost and prep for 2016

I reckoned Champions League participation was worth circa £22m to Celtic. By contrast, Europa League football will be worth less than a quarter of that. Ancillary income, such as retail and kiosk sales, will also suffer.

The challenge now is to improve the team without that income. This should not be impossible. Malmo managed it, and we’re not in a situation where the bank is hammering at the door. But what should be clear, is that the next five days represent the best chance to strengthen the team for next August’s qualifiers. There’s a notion that the biggest games of our season come early, but we’ve 11 months to plan for 2016’s biggest games.

Three things to remind you about:

Golfers: buy a raffle ticket for £1 to win a round of golf FOR FOUR PEOPLE at the magnificent Aberdour course in Fife. Competition ends on Saturday, get your tickets here!!! It’s offered by Taggsybhoy, in support of the Foundation.

Aberdour

There’s a Mary’s Meals collection from 1pm on the Celtic Way ahead of the game on Saturday. Ideally we’re looking for backpacks, but handtowels (the school kitchens you paid for have handwashing facilities and each child is given their own handtowel), pencils, rulers, etc.

If the kids got new kit for starting school last week, dig out the old stuff and bring it along.

Magners have kindly donated two Premium Seats in the Jock Stein Stand for Saturday’s games. You can win the tickets by answering this question:

Who is Celtic’s top scorer this season?

Player’s surname in the SUBJECT line of your email to celticquicknews@gmail.com . Competition closes at 22:00 TONIGHT, so not a lot of time to enter.

No call today for a donation, go stick a £1 in Taggsy’s raffle instead. Thanks.

  1. I would go so far as to say, in a Celtic shirt, Berget was absolutely awful. I still don’t rate him. He has one foot, his right, and all we needed to do was keep him on his left side all the time.

    Turkeybhoy

Commons is a proven scorer, Allen has a long, long way to go before he reaches anything like the heights as a Celt that KC has.

Tierney and O’Connell have a handful of games between them in the Celtic first team. Yes they have promise but let’s not put undue pressure on young, inexperienced shoulders.

At this time it’s some old heads we need to steer a steady course, not rookies.

  2. SETTING FREE THE BEARS FOR RES

    “Virgil the guy you mentioned.”

Sorry I think I am misunderstanding you here, as Virgil has not played champions league football before. Was your point not to do with signing newbie’s and not playing “Champions league hardened players”?

“Funny way to frame it. We were not PLANNING for VVD to get an injury. We were factoring in that very real possibilty.”

Not really a funny way at all as you suggested the possibility of him getting injured.

I suppose you have proof of us factoring in or to use my word planning for this very scenario?

“Who are these other assets? VVD was the only one currently attracting that level of bid, I believe. It is a long time since Forrest was valued thus and Johansen, at best, would only fetch half what VVD will bring. Bitton would need another good season and Craig will need another 6 months injury free before his form brings a commensurate bid.”

“Johansen would fetch only half of what VVD will bring”

There’s the 50% shortfall right there, you’ve identified it yourself.

Oh and of course the players brought in would also have a resale value of some sort.

“An “understanding”, you say? And that would have kept him focused? As I understand it, such an “understanding’ was already in place and yet VVD had a poor-ish game.”

So what are you suggesting here? Should we have sold him early in the window and bought more focused players?

I don’t really see your issue here at all. We already have an understanding with Virgil and this has no bearing whatsoever on speculating a future transfer fee.

“And yet it remains a better option than making things worse, which was my point. I don’t doubt the legitimacy of the concerns. My doubt is about the cocksuredness of the remedy proposed.”

How would spending money we could easily raise make things worse? I’d argue we made things worse by punting Matthews as soon as the window opened.

I think we both agree on not over stretching ourselves and anyone who thinks we should be spending money we don’t have is plainly wrong (Though I don’t see many of those on this blog).

However it’s clear we lack ambition, you may not agree with this assessment but spending net £1mil this summer, is not the actions of an ambitious club.

Not sure how upsetsome of these teams are to go out of the Europa League……

Maybe some are not,but that just shows you the money being pumped into them,to be also rans.Dont give a toss about their fans. They are the same with giving their fans a day out at Wembley,in the League Cup.Dont give a toss.I am delighted My team is in the Europa Cup,gives me a chance to see something different from the norm. These English Prima Donnas dont give a monkeys about their fans.Time they woke up to reality.

He wasn’t even the future of Hibs, never mind Celtic.

SPFL gave the rearranged Tic fixtures as a result of Europa league participation. They didn’t happen to give the results as well (or are they waiting for next year and their new Clubs involvement).

  7. Just got back in…A bit “well lit” to be honest. Got Rod and the Faces on the go and accepting our status in the EL. It was always going to be….The warnings were there from the Inter defeat, we have not improved.

Anyway I see we have racists in our midst, not a surprise but coincidentally my lhad watched our Tuesday shambles in a bar in Split. Even more scary than our performance was the racist rantings of a young half wit wearing the Hoops. My lhad and his mates had to slap him down in order to avoid leaving the locals with a horrible image of our support.

We should be aware of this element and keep them slapped.

Incidentally, the fans of West Ham and Southampton would probably like a few EL nights, their clubs CGAS.

jmccormick – We do have some roasters in our support. At the Malmo home game a guy behind me was thrown out for shouting for Ronny to go and that he was going to shoot him if he didn’t. Started firing away with his fingers whilst his mate was sleeping before kick off…European games brings out some bumpers…

  9. I heard he was dead on

I’m not convinced that EPL fans want European football as much as we do.

They’ve been bamboozled into thinking their league is so great European ties interfere with the domestic season where they play against top class players every week (apparently)

Salzburg go to penalties with Dinamo Minsk

  10. But surely these lads are good enough to be playing first team football. just to get a game every week.get them in this season.and for God sake give them a decent chance. I’m talking about players.like Tierney.Allan.O Connell.and Kelvin Millar.as for B T Sports having Television rights for both the Champions League. And the Europa league. Surely that’s not right.

One of CQN’s greatest heroes of all time KOJO was a racist and loved by many on here. Many still pine at his absence. He was also admired by Paul67. However, his illustrious fascism afforded so much terms of endearment from CQN Tims that he is perceived as some as a hero. I suspect it’s the same regarding our fascist board. What property is this that social justice seeking Tims find abhorrent abd some find acceptable? I blame catholic schools.

When posters believe that the manager has the end say on who is signed, that’s it, they refuse to believe anything else.

I remember the night Bangura was signed, a person who worked at the club told me that he was at Ross Hall, he said I could post it on the blog, I did, at the same time Paul was posting about signing Diawarra as Lenny was in Portugal watching him, Bangura signed, Lenny knew feck all about him, just like big TM knew about EB.

There are quite a few more that Lenny didn’t know about, even Ronny has had players signed for him, Graig Gordon springs to mind, Ronny wasn’t at the club, maybes they did it by a seance :-)

I am not deriding the players that I mentioned. What I am saying is that its time we gave the young ,(a bit proven)boys a chance.Commons is 33,not much longer to go.Allan is his prime successor, give him games. Most people saying,Izzy is played to often, give Tierney a few games.O;Connel was great at the weekend, give him more games.Janko looks a future star, play him more.Armstrong should be played in his future position, drop Jo Hansen, let him play there. Its not rocket science,we know whats needed. How will we ever know if these kids can make it,if we never give them a chance.

I know you are a Commons fan,as am I,but his time is almost done.We have a hungry boy ready to take his place.

  16. Craig, sorry, and you can add Tonev to the list that Ronny didn’t sign, he even said at a presser he didn’t know about him, but he had been well scouted, but little things like that don’t matter when it interfears with their reality.

    HH

  17. Paul67 – thanks and well done for that

Now, I was really really low in relation to my own relationship with Celtic after Tuesday night

I did not see Malmo any better than a mid table SPL team, yet that have knocked us out of the Champions league

So who do we blame ?

Personally, I do not like Ronny’s tactics and how he sets us up to play, I do not see this fast paced, quick passing, closing down system he talks about ?

I often see players wandering out of position leaving huge gaps, poor passing, poor movement, and a stranded Centre forward, who often has to play out side a centre forward position to pick up the ball, often leaving Celtic with no one attacking/inside the opposition 18 yard box

That’s what I see watching us play, any one else ?

For our poor system ( and it is possibly down to not having players who can play it) I Blame the Management team ( they should also see we do not have players to continually play this style ?)

Now as a club – and I believe we should be living within our means.

In the last set of accounts, Celtic spent £39m on its football operation – I will criticise the board when required, we cannot for spending this level of money in Scotland on football operations ?

How this is being spent, and success it brings, should be seriously questioned and challenged by US Celtic fans and our Board ?

I do not believe we are seeing value for money for this level of spend – compare to any team in Scotland, or look at Malmo ( and I know money does not buy success before any dive in on this), how can so many of the smaller European teams sustain success with much lower budgets ? Again Malmo 2nd consecutive season in Champions league

I believe there needs to be a drastic complete Review of our football Operations Budget, and clear identification of failing areas with corrective actions put in place immediately ?

Here is 2 clear examples ( for me anyway)

We signed Dedrych Boyata as our new Centre Half to compete in Champions league qualifiers – a player who played in less than 20, 1st team games over the past 4 seasons- now I do not think he has been as bad as many others see, and he will come good, with more regular games, but was this the right choice, knowing what we would be faced with ?

It is common knowledge that VVD would be leaving before end of August, for me we should have ensured we were signing a No1 target Centre half with over 100 games so match fit for this type of game ( not a reserve player with limited exposure )

Nadir Ciftci – now who did not know he would be hit with a substantial ban ? Yet he was our No1 Centre forward target ? – no chance of being match fit for European games

Who made these type of decisions, huge impact on our chances – poor planning ( as Paul67 points out in his header). our player priorities for going into the qualifiers were wrong ? My view

I could go on about the timing of selling Adam Mathews ?

For me, some very poor decisions, with little forward planning ?

Who is accountable for this type of decision, our priorities should have been different ?

Was this Ronny’s choice ? Peter Lawell ( who does have a major influence here) or John Park, who also is a major player in our football dept decisions

    Now onto the players

I commented during the game, that VVD made no effort at 2nd goal

I have no qualms about him being sold, a very decent player, who’s mind is often elsewhere

I think we have Johansens twin come back to us this season, been very poor, yet Ronny cannot see this ? Again would have no qualms if he left.

We need a major clear out, many I could mention

This brings us to who is making the decisions on who we are signing ?

    A failing Dept

    Our PR

    A failing Dept

    Our fans Treatment/ Security

    A failing Dept
