Financial cost and prep for 2016

988

I reckoned Champions League participation was worth circa £22m to Celtic. By contrast, Europa League football will be worth less than a quarter of that. Ancillary income, such as retail and kiosk sales, will also suffer.

The challenge now is to improve the team without that income. This should not be impossible. Malmo managed it, and we’re not in a situation where the bank is hammering at the door. But what should be clear, is that the next five days represent the best chance to strengthen the team for next August’s qualifiers. There’s a notion that the biggest games of our season come early, but we’ve 11 months to plan for 2016’s biggest games.

Three things to remind you about:

Golfers: buy a raffle ticket for £1 to win a round of golf FOR FOUR PEOPLE at the magnificent Aberdour course in Fife. Competition ends on Saturday, get your tickets here!!! It’s offered by Taggsybhoy, in support of the Foundation.

Aberdour

There’s a Mary’s Meals collection from 1pm on the Celtic Way ahead of the game on Saturday. Ideally we’re looking for backpacks, but handtowels (the school kitchens you paid for have handwashing facilities and each child is given their own handtowel), pencils, rulers, etc.

If the kids got new kit for starting school last week, dig out the old stuff and bring it along.

Magners have kindly donated two Premium Seats in the Jock Stein Stand for Saturday’s games. You can win the tickets by answering this question:

Who is Celtic’s top scorer this season?

Player’s surname in the SUBJECT line of your email to celticquicknews@gmail.com . Competition closes at 22:00 TONIGHT, so not a lot of time to enter.

No call today for a donation, go stick a £1 in Taggsy’s raffle instead. Thanks.

When you have got a guy up frot like LG, who’s no better than Kenny MIller- how are you supposed to unpick the locks of the cream of European football?

No equivalent Naka or Lubo- no magic from anyone, nae wee dinks with the outside of the boot to set up something special, no reverse pass which no-one seen which unlocks a defence and leads to a goal.

Celtic were out as soon as the name Malmo emerged from the hat.

It is a good example at one extreme, as Malmo are at the other.

We need to somehow find the right mix for success. Lenny struggled for a couple of years just like Ronny is now*, both with one hand tied behind their back IMO

Yes, rejoicing that our nation’s representative had been eliminated.

For God sake, Celtic, stop all business with these people , rip the advertising hoardings to shreds – no matter the lost revenue ( we’ve done well enough in that regard not making the CL) and tell them all they no longer have any privileges at CP.

The oracle of football punditry,Charlie Nicholas, said on sky’s football programme on Tuesday that Qarabag were the most useless team he had seen and gave the impression that was why we beat them . I wasn’t surprised by that, he has a major downer on us for whatever reason.

Has the myth been dispelled by your figures?

The money may not be being spent immediately it is earned. I get my wages monthly. I still like to have some money available in the final week before my next wage comes in.

What would be the point in spending it all. Look at the clubs that have spent a factor of 4 and 5 times more than we have available to spend, and still they fail.

Look at clubs like Ajax who earned good transfer money too from sale of coveted players. Are they going around buying someone of equal value to the one they sold? Why are so many comparator clubs (big clubs in small leagues) behaving exactly as we do? Do you think they all know something about football finances? Or are they all run by numpties like our club allegedly is? Or are we salting money away like KevJ used to allege?

    Hope you are well.

I think our board do a reasonable job 7/10 , however, I do have a serious concern about the amount they cost via a vis our turnover, and their ability to adress strategic issues.

When Fergus first came along, we had a total cost for the board of around £250 k based upon a turnover of c £15m.

That number has now risen to c £2m based on c £50 (CL dependent)

My figures are approximates, but bottom line is the % of turnover taken up by board costs / wages has gone from less than 2% to nearly 4%.

Add in, that are we really any better off in areas like youth development, state of the art stadium, competing in Europe etc than we were 25 years ago, and you start to question if these guys are really delivering .

( for clarity, when, I mention the stadium, it’s a damn sight better than places like Hampden, but compared to some of new ones with rail stations, roofs etc, it’s not state of the art)

  22. Well folks,

The chat is Euro pots and how great are Celtic.

Yes, is there a poll? I think Celtic are great.

On Euro pots, we lose 2.5 points this season. Two home wins in Europa will see us increase our own co-efficient over five years. That’s hard graft and I thank every Celtic player who’s taken the field for my team since 2011.

We will be a seeded team for all our 3 rounds as champions next year. After next season we lose our last great season, 16pts. As a Celt, next summer is going to be fantastic.

I am glad you agree it is a myth and I would say yes, dispelled

Re your wages of £21m :-) : Sorry, but that is a poor analogy, as in the land of accounting land your wage earned and not spent would be deferred and matched up against the relevant expenditure ( Season ticket income is the parallel comparator) . if you wanted to compare in a “profit and lossy” world of accounting.

We have generated profit of £21m in last two years to May 2014. FACT :-)

Can you explain this in line with the statement made in August 2014 and before that we spend all the income we earn? I have proved over a 5 year period that is not the case.

Maybe we should have said ” we will one day spend all the income we earn, but for now we will accumulate the profits and reserves” OR ” we need to first make up for the £9m losses made in the 3 earlier years and then sometime in the future we will definitely, trust me, spend all the income we earn, honest”

I never made the statement, I am pointing out that it is as best, misleading and at worst a lie.

  27. SETTING FREE THE BEARS FOR

“We were talking about gambling in CL qualification ties. VVD had played in two previous CL qualification campaigns. This was his 3rd such experience, his 9th CL qualifying tie. He had also played in our 2013/14 Group stages against Barca Milan and Ajax.”

Ok fair enough we were talking at cross purposes, as buying in new talent would have made little difference. “Champions League Hardened Players’ to me means more than a few qualifiers & not many of our current squad can be described as such.

“The proof is that he was not sold before the tie. Unless that was a whim or an oversight, then it was planned. You started by asking why wait to sell him. I provided scenarios and reasons for doing so. That’s all you asked for.”

I think you’ve misunderstood me on this one. Saying why wait was referring to why wait until the qualifiers are decided before making acquisitions? I wasn’t advocating selling Virgil at all. My only point in all of this is we have a sellable asset in Virgil & Speculating a percentage of his future transfer fee early in the window was not going to hurt us financially.

“Yes but you have now sold an averagely talented first team pick and you might still have a disgruntled VVD who wants higher wages or a club with a better chance in CL. You cannot assume that if we sell one of the chorus that the lead singer will want to stay.

The re-sale value depends on whether they were a success. How much did the £5m buy Scheidt go for?”

No need to sell anyone if we had qualified but failure brings consequence and VVD was already going. There may be no need at all to make up the shortfall by selling Johansen but we have him as an option if need be.

“No, I am suggesting that, there is an upside and a downside to each decision. There is no win:win. There is no guarantee. There are no no brainers.”

I’m not suggesting there are any guarantees or no brainers, but spending money we have does us no harm at all. Again though I don’t see many here suggesting we spend money we don’t have. Only wanting our club to plan better and show some ambition or at the very least come out and be honest. Let us know we are living in hope & not in expectation. We pay our money willingly, expecting some investment in our playing squad. £1mil net is a slap in the face as is parading a £275k SFL player as a marquee signing.

“It was your suggestion to sell him. My preference was to keep him and play him. He seemed focused enough in the previous 5 CL qualification ties but in the Malmo away tie, along with 9 or 10 other team mates, he did not show up. You can speculate that your unspecified replacement would have done better and, in that “what if” scenario, I cannot prove that you will have been wrong and you cannot prove that you would have been right. I can point to players brought in as early replacements, such as Moyokoulo in Karagandy, that were very poor and so is evidence against your contention but I am sure we could find some more rare instances of CL debutants hitting the ground running for Celtic.”

See above, I think you misunderstood me as I wasn’t suggesting we sell VVD at all. My hope was with some decent reinforcements we would have had a better chance of qualification. Perhaps we would have been in a position at that stage to keep Virgil, until at least January. Not speculating part of his future transfer fee pre qualifying, may have cost us that opportunity to do so, not to mention the millions we’ve now lost in revenue.

To me our number one priority this season should have been Champions league qualification. We’ve had a year to plan it, yet we only speculate a poultry sum. This sticks in many fans throats.

Anyway nice talking to you and one thing we can both agree on is we both want what’s best for our club.

  28. Re Southampton chat

Whilst they have been asset stripping us, they have also lost a fair few decent players themselves.

Bottom line is you can only do that for so long, particularly in a competitive league, before you get found out.

15 years ago Middlesborough looked like an EPL mainstay

10 years ago, Bolton looked similar, and 5 years ago , it was Wigan

Look at all of them now, maybe things are catching up with Southampton, and they are about to find their ‘ natural level’
