Financial cost and prep for 2016

988

I reckoned Champions League participation was worth circa £22m to Celtic. By contrast, Europa League football will be worth less than a quarter of that. Ancillary income, such as retail and kiosk sales, will also suffer.

The challenge now is to improve the team without that income. This should not be impossible. Malmo managed it, and we’re not in a situation where the bank is hammering at the door. But what should be clear, is that the next five days represent the best chance to strengthen the team for next August’s qualifiers. There’s a notion that the biggest games of our season come early, but we’ve 11 months to plan for 2016’s biggest games.

Three things to remind you about:

Golfers: buy a raffle ticket for £1 to win a round of golf FOR FOUR PEOPLE at the magnificent Aberdour course in Fife. Competition ends on Saturday, get your tickets here!!! It’s offered by Taggsybhoy, in support of the Foundation.

Aberdour

There’s a Mary’s Meals collection from 1pm on the Celtic Way ahead of the game on Saturday. Ideally we’re looking for backpacks, but handtowels (the school kitchens you paid for have handwashing facilities and each child is given their own handtowel), pencils, rulers, etc.

If the kids got new kit for starting school last week, dig out the old stuff and bring it along.

Magners have kindly donated two Premium Seats in the Jock Stein Stand for Saturday’s games. You can win the tickets by answering this question:

Who is Celtic’s top scorer this season?

Player’s surname in the SUBJECT line of your email to celticquicknews@gmail.com . Competition closes at 22:00 TONIGHT, so not a lot of time to enter.

No call today for a donation, go stick a £1 in Taggsy’s raffle instead. Thanks.

Celtic legend Pat Bonner mystified by Hoops tactics

CELTIC legend Pat Bonner has warned Ronny Deila that he can’t afford a Europa League flop.

Celtic are facing life in the Europa League after being knocked out of the Champions League

The former Parkhead keeper, below, watched as Malmo destroyed the Hoops’ Champions League hopes in Sweden with a 4-3 aggregate win.

Bonner slated Celtic’s zonal defensive system after they lost three of the four goals to corner-kicks.

And he believes a good run in the Europa League is the only way for the team to salvage their season.

Bonner said: “They have to do something in Europe.

“When Martin O’Neill was knocked out of the Champions League in 2003, they went on to the final of the UEFA Cup and everybody forgot about the Champions League.

“That’s where Celtic are judged and that’s where Ronny Deila will be judged. He has to do something this year.”

Bonner wants an end to the rigid zonal marking system which didn’t work against Malmo.

He added: “I would prefer a mix of zonal and man marking so the guys who are not the main headers of the ball still have a job.

“For the second goal, they set up differently. Craig Gordon had somebody between him and Berget.

“That might have been sorted at half-time but it didn’t help because there were so many bodies in there.

“At the first goal, they had eight bodies in the six-yard box and for the second, they had seven in there. Too many bodies.

“If I was the opposition playing against that, I would do what they did and block them off. Then if the delivery is right, you’ve got a chance.

After Tuesday night I avoided all football media til Son of Son of the Helm told me the CL pot for Malmo. Wow, I thought, that’s going to be 6 tough nights for the Malmo fans. Hate to think what Malmo Quick News will be like after those games. Suddenly my appetite for the Europa League was back and I ventured onto CQN where the same old same old rumblings are ongoing as has happened after every defeat ever.

Not for me. The Europa League teams look more like our level than the fantasy teams in pot 1 & 2 of the CL. Sadly we can’t draw AZ or Brugge which would be home turf for me.

Group of Fun – Villareal, Sparta Prague and Groningen

Group to Progress – Sporting, Slovan and Molde

Group of Death – Spurs, Monaco, Rosenborg

  6. CQNERS,

In the aftermath of Tuesday’s shame game I see lot’s of talk about lessons being learned, I’ll only believe it when I see……..

    1. Proper support for the man on the ball – 2/3 support players moving toward the man on the ball to give him passing options.

    2. Proper support for the poor bastard who draws the short straw to lead the attack – too often he’s isolated and left to forage on his own, chasing aimless crosses and passes (usually surrounded by 3 defenders).

    3. A radical rethink on ball retention, too often we are happy to keep the ball moving side-ways to retain it but we happily boot it forward or cross it to a lone striker when we’ve run out of ideas, only for it to come straight back (see point 2).

    4. Zonal marking to defend corners or man-to-man marking, whichever, just sort it out so everybody has a role and they know what is expected of them.

    5. A rethink on how we cover the full backs when they venture forward.

    6. Review the tactic of bringing 9 players to defend the 18 yard box (these players have invariably run pass the attacker with the ball to get into a defensive position). We break up the attacks by knocking the ball out but we’re all in defensive positions so the attacking team simply mount another attack, it’s childish shooty in practice.

I think that covers it, oh, Good morning all.

    Colin

    —————————————————————————————–

Peter Lawwell remit from DD, is to run the club within its means – he does that perfectly well.

Everything that comes in – i.e. all the money that the we generate – ALL the money that comes in, goes out again – spent on the club.

We have a football wages bill in the £30 million plus range.

Neither DD, nor, Lawwell picks the players – that is the job of the manager and his staff.

The salary scale will not be exceeded and we will not take on crippling debt and jeopardize the future of the club.

It is pointless for people like yourself to advocate a debt policy for a ‘quick fix’ Euro adventure – it is NOT going to happen!!!

If the worst that can happen to us is that we earn around £8 million per year from Europe and and end up always playing in the EL groups, then so be it – we are not good enough at present for the CL.

    FACTS

    ——–

There are approximately 1300 clubs in the 54 UEFA affiliated nations.

32 (2.5%) qualify for the Champions League Groups, of which the big five richest nations provide 17 (53%)

This means that all the other 1200 clubs in Europe are basically chasing FIFTEEN places – that’s an 80 to 1 chance of getting in.

There are 48 (4%) places available for the Europa League Groups – Celtic are TWENTY-SECOND in this list.

So basically EIGHTY (6.5%) teams in all of Europe get to compete meaningfully in European Football competition – Celtic is there EVERY YEAR, in one competition, or the other.

Every year 93.5% of teams in Europe get no opportunity to play European football.

So please let’s get things in to perspective.

We are a small country who have never qualified for any World Cup, or European Championship for over a generation, and we may never again( even with WGS) – When we have QUALIFIED we have NEVER made it out of the initial stages.

As a country, we are POOR in both resources and achievements – FACT.

We of a Celtic persuasion hark back to the days when we were the ‘big boys’ of Europe – Quarter-finals/semi-finals were the norm – but the world has moved gigantically on – only those with the deepest pockets, large TV contracts – billionaire owners, are now able to compete regularly at the top level.

Lawwell would be vilified, and rightly so, if he went down the Ibrox debt shame route – he won’t do it – Celtic won’t do it… and no real Celtic supporter wants him to do it.

We MUST get more ‘bang for our buck’ under our present system – that is down to the football staff, who identify, choose, coach, train and motivate players AND for those players to ‘step up to the plate’ and not SHIT IT, as they did on Tuesday evening.

  8. I heard he was dead on

    Rumour doing the rounds –

Celtic to sign Ryan Christie from ICT for 500K and loan him back for the season.

If it’s true I would do it.

Our player, continuing to play first team football, Inverness don’t lose a player but he cannot play against us and we have one of Scotland’s best emerging talents to come to us later.

It’s forward planning giving us Allan, Henderson, Christie, Armstrong, GMS and Forrest.

Brown and Commons won’t go on forever.

Johansen as far as I am concerned you can punt any time you like. Grossly over-rated player, dreadful passer and lacks game intelligence and discipline for me. He annoys the hell out of me.

Biton would be the old head among that lot and is a good player. He may be the next one Lawwell moves out the door regardless.

    Thoughts on Christie?

dont ask the Flakey one to say how long a generation is, he will go on a referendum rant!!

but he is right about the facts on the countrys qualifying record, and is entitled to his opinion about whether scotland will ever again qualify – he may well be right, though with the euros being expanded that should help countrys like scotland

my main puzzle though is this – why are we signing all these youngish scottish players given the record of the national team in the last ‘generation’

People are allowed to (tongue in cheek) generate when they are sixteen – so more than a generation – n’est pas?

My main point was really getting more value from Celtic for the money we spend, bearing in mind teams like Malmo, are more successful in getting into Europe at the moment, on much less income than us.

Nevertheless we are always in the top 60 in Europe and we should take that as a starting point and be realistic of our situation.

    It’s nothing bad….so, don’t worry be ‘Happy’ like Pharrell…please:)

Anyway…..McMurdo’s blog which was posted on these pages yesterday…nail-on-head.

I’ve said for years on here and…been destroyed for it but, a visit from the medicine-man is desperately needed for Timdom.

I said on here yesterday that, if RD’s Celtic were to play Warburtons huns…I’d go to the nearest bookies and get sumdy to put a line on the huns winning…..sad to say.

I think that the establishment detect the same so…look for us to be drawn v’s the huns in one of the cup competitions.

There’s nothing that I can’t stand more than…seeing Celtic being beaten by the huns…feckin sickens me.

But…there are far too many Celtic supporters who…in all innocence…simply don’t get the fact that, as a club at the very top level of the club…Celtic’s hierarchy are in cahoots with the occupants of ibrox.

If their not…why did they not fight tooth and nail to get back all the money and trophies that were stolen from Celtic supporters / customers since the inception of the David Murray era?

Why did they not kick up an almighty fluck when the huns were given a licence to start again without paying or, demonstating ‘any’ intention to pay-back ‘any’ of the £140 million that they swindled?

I can’t shake the feeling that…somewhere along the lines…Murray and, Desmond were forced into a corner because of the revelations of the Internet-Bampots and, they cooked up this agreement that – Rangers FC would start again in Division 3 and, avoid paying ‘any’ of the stolen money or, trophies back – giving Celtic a chance to hoover-up the CL-money-pot for the next 3/4 years and, let the daftie Celtic supporters glutton-feast on ice cream & jelly….and dance on Rangers graves…falling for the scam…hook-line-sinker.

Fast forwarding to today….Celtic FC had the chance to hoover-up 3/4 dometic trebles and the ensuing CL-money-pot…whose fault is it that they didn’t?

Well, there are lots of reasons why the above didn’t happen but…for me at least…despite winning 4 league titles in a row…it seems to me that, Celtic FC are in freefall.

One wee mystery for me…why did Roy Keane peak his head round the Celtic Park door then…run for the hills?

Would Roy Keane have been the disaster that a lot of the ‘happy-clappers’ seem to think?

How do we know that, it wasn’t written in the stars that Celtic FC was RK’s destiny club were he would ‘click’ as a football manager?

Folk said that RK’s managerial record would not qualify him for the Celtic job?

What type of record did Neil have, or even RD?

The answer is….we’ll never know how RK would have fared…maybe we will….one day?

What I think that I know is…were Celtic FC finds itself at the minute…they need, badly need a visit from the medicine man.

The medicine will have an awful taste but…the patient will be re-born imho.

The medicine?…..a cup defeat from Warburtons huns will shake the apathy / comfort-zone that Timdom is residing in right now.

One defeat from the Warburtons{died}huns will open the eyes of the sleepy-hollow-faithful-through-&-through-cash-cows-blind-mice and give them all the much ‘needed’ boot in the erchie to shake them from – apathy-hunlike-smugness-snobbyness – and fill them with the realisation / determination / uppitty-Tim-rebelliousness…needed to make Celtic the club of, the underdogs of society.

I stress again….the worst thing that I have endured as a Celtic supporter is….defeat from the huns…but I would gladly accept a defeat from Warburtons huns …if?….in the long run…it makes Celtic better….I think it would flick a switch.

A concerned fan from the past who just wants to see the Celts making us walk ten feet tall again.

Take care Celtic fans and, God Bless…..oot. YNWA.

  28. Much celebration last night and ‘perspective’ type posts after the latest EPL side found themselves knocked out of Europe.

I think we all know that none of them take the Europa League particularly seriously but I see Koeman claimed his team were the better side and poor refereeing decisions cost them. Sound familiar?

As for bracketing West Ham as a cause for further celebration do bear in mind that the West Ham team that was narrowly knocked out subsequently made just the 11 changes for the following league game.

    Perspective indeed.

  29. JFH

Ronny decided to go public using an emotive word like ‘scared’, rather than more neutral language, like ‘the occasion got to them’ . I think the players are entitled to disagree when asked in interviews post-match if that accurately reflected their attitude on the pitch.

Different if they had publicly questioned the manager’s tactics or team selection.

  30. I heard he was dead on

The only way the likes of Armstrong and Allan will be able to play in Europe is with games.

We have 6 at a minimum now.

It’s a chance to build for next season.

I’ve been thinking about things like everyone else since Tuesday and I am as angry as the next man over how that game went down but there is a silver lining.

If it is to be Ronny Deila for the foreseeable future he needs to build his team. He began to do this in January because last summer he basically had to go with Neil Lennon’s team plus loans. Only Scepovic was signed for money.

The loans have come and gone but essentially the majority of the team is still Neil Lennon’s plus GMS and Armstrong and now Boyata, Baily, Janko and Allan.

The team needs to be changed/improved.

We need two fullbacks because Lustig is a sick note and Izzy needs competition.

It is likely a new centre half will be required because Ambrose and Mulgrew are not adequate replacements for Virgil and if one of them was moved on I don’t think too many tears would be shed.

A midfield player who can win the ball and who the opposition are scared to play against.

The creative midfielder we may have signed in Allan or have in Rogic. It’s a development game.

And then there is the striker. Griffiths and Ciftci are there. We need one more especially if Scepovic goes. Not a loan, a guy who is going to be our striker for more than a season.

We cannot do all of this at once. One loan would be acceptable this year.

Signing up young Scottish talent and developing it appears to be a part of the manager’s remit regardless of who it is.

This weekend up to Tuesday must yield results and the manager needs to wheel and deal with proper backing.

It’s likely Derk, Stokesy, Virgil, Scepovic and McGregor will be for the off. That should be over 10 million quid into the club and saved wages to be used on others.

Once we know who we are playing in the Europa League it might determine what is spent.

Screw up twice and some people are willing to let it go to see progress. If we don’t see it there will be trouble.

  31. Murdochbhoy@8.23

Spot on with each of them. At various times during games we can achieve some of them but on Tuesday we failed miserably, was it lack of discipline or something deeper?

Why is that ? well the bread man seems very strong on being organised on the park and his team having a high work rate. Now Ronny talks about these things but there is very little sign of it on the park like many Celtic fans I am beginning to wonder if Ronny is up to the job I am prepared to give him another 12 months but if we dont qualify for the CL proper next season for what ever reason he should walk. Thanks for coming back – last qualification France 1998 – so next year 2016, it will be 18 years.

People are allowed to (tongue in cheek) generate when they are sixteen – so more than a generation – n’est p

Ronny said they played like they were scared, there is a slight difference, doesn’t mean you’re calling someone a coward or anything.

To most fans it looked like they were something wrong with most of the players, especially the senior ones like Commons and Brown. Now if they weren’t playing scared then why so poor, why no heart, why no fight?

That’s the question that should’ve been fired back at any player that says they weren’t scared (or even ashamed) as Commons reply.

I think Commons even said it was down to bad luck (happy to be corrected on that one). If you are blaming bad luck for those 2 games then you don’t know football.
