Financial cost and prep for 2016

988

I reckoned Champions League participation was worth circa £22m to Celtic. By contrast, Europa League football will be worth less than a quarter of that. Ancillary income, such as retail and kiosk sales, will also suffer.

The challenge now is to improve the team without that income. This should not be impossible. Malmo managed it, and we’re not in a situation where the bank is hammering at the door. But what should be clear, is that the next five days represent the best chance to strengthen the team for next August’s qualifiers. There’s a notion that the biggest games of our season come early, but we’ve 11 months to plan for 2016’s biggest games.

Three things to remind you about:

Golfers: buy a raffle ticket for £1 to win a round of golf FOR FOUR PEOPLE at the magnificent Aberdour course in Fife. Competition ends on Saturday, get your tickets here!!! It’s offered by Taggsybhoy, in support of the Foundation.

Aberdour

There’s a Mary’s Meals collection from 1pm on the Celtic Way ahead of the game on Saturday. Ideally we’re looking for backpacks, but handtowels (the school kitchens you paid for have handwashing facilities and each child is given their own handtowel), pencils, rulers, etc.

If the kids got new kit for starting school last week, dig out the old stuff and bring it along.

Magners have kindly donated two Premium Seats in the Jock Stein Stand for Saturday’s games. You can win the tickets by answering this question:

Who is Celtic’s top scorer this season?

Player’s surname in the SUBJECT line of your email to celticquicknews@gmail.com . Competition closes at 22:00 TONIGHT, so not a lot of time to enter.

No call today for a donation, go stick a £1 in Taggsy’s raffle instead. Thanks.

  1. Is it true to say that Marks Rosenburg a seasoned 32 year old pro terrorized our defense last Tuesday night.

  2. Mixed feeling about Malmo’s draw in UCL. They are prestige ties that I would have loved to go to so a bit gutted. However, I think we all know we would have severely struggled with all of them home and away. The highlight of our last champions league campaign was a win at home to a poor Ajax team via a deflected goal from Kayal, I cringe every time they play that video at Parkhead. The rest, bar 70 mins in Milan, was quite painful viewing. Which Euro campaign did you enjoy more 2013-2014 or 2014-2015?

    The only way Tuesday’s exit is not a complete disaster is if we have a decent Europa League run and are still in Europe post Christmas. Again the pressure is on, it won’t be easy and we will have to put in good performances.

    When you look at some of the teams who didn’t make the Champions League and the Europa League it also puts things in perspective somewhat. Don’t get me wrong we absolutely blew it from a great position in the tie. What perplexes me, is Qarabag away. We put in arguably one of most mature away performances in recent years against a decent team side (went on to put Young Boys out 4-0 agg) but followed that up with a total naïve one in Malmo.

    Ah well, draw lunchtime, game on Saturday, onwards and upwards??? more like onwards and onwards……………..

    Don’t like RD and never his the fact but Tuesday is down to the players. 3 times I’ve read “we lost the tie when they scored late goal”.Going into game with that mind set no wonder we performed the way we did. Shite. Bags the lot of them.

    Mate.

    The reality.

    Money matters.

    It may be regrettable,but it`s a fact.

    You say:

    The point which PFAYR,myself and others are making is that footballing strategy is being driven by non-footballing people at the club,or PLC. Indeed,the footballing side of things is supporting the PLC,not the other way round.

    Hard to believe.Nevertheless I`ll try.

    The ” footballing side of things” has cost us 20,30 million squid.

    The footballing side of things has FAILED.

    Results matter.

    Only results.

    Failures aka Deila must go .

    Do you seriously think that accountants would have changed the Malmo result?

    The problem is onfield.

    Not off-field.

    We need a face to face.

    When I can straighten you out .

    Face to face.

    I look forward to it.

    Swedish press had said biggest weakness with us was lack of goal scorers

    If we had strikers it keeps the ball up the park

    Our biggest weakness

  6. Hate to say this and I know I’m stating the obvious but Scottish Football is almost dead and the clubs including us are on the way out. Market forces etc have seen to it that we are being starved of much needed money and without the aid of a crystal ball our Club is reaching the end of the road. The future is dire, action required now.

    We simply must get out of Scotland. Stop dreaming of things past. It’s OK being the biggest fish, in Scotland’s wee pool but I guess there are teams like ours in San Marino, Luxembourg who are the big fish in their pool, but do hee -haw outside in the big sea.

    Seriously worried.

    Me thinks you may well be spot on with this.

    “I can’t shake the feeling that…somewhere along the lines…Murray and, Desmond were forced into a corner because of the revelations of the Internet-Bampots and, they cooked up this agreement that – Rangers FC would start again in Division 3 and, avoid paying ‘any’ of the stolen money or, trophies back – giving Celtic a chance to hoover-up the CL-money-pot for the next 3/4 years and, let the daftie Celtic supporters glutton-feast on ice cream & jelly….and dance on Rangers graves…falling for the scam…hook-line-and-sinker.”

    Problem is for us, we blew it.

    And we will again, our only decent defender is about to be sold, with no replacement on the horizon, loans, who knows, but we will go into the CL qualifiers next year, IF we win the league, with a half cocked defence.

    Aye, wonderful forward planning.

    And some on here still blame the coach.

  14. Good enjoyable football related posts this morning. I hate the knee jerk reactions to a bad defeat and good Tims & Trolls vying with each other to denigrate the Club.

    Don’t really want to talk about Sevco but Kev J’s post made their progress a central issue. There is no doubt they have improved a lot with little or no investment. I realise that they are playing in a lower League and their Cup game with St, Johnstone will be a better barometer. However it is an indication of what a good Manager can bring to the Club.

    Which brings me to the point of my post, how good or bad is Ronny. I was totally underwhelmed when he was appointed and totally disenchanted by his set up and tactics in his first European campaign. Over his first year he grew into the job and I began to buy in to his philosophy. I was reasonably happy with how things were going this season and with the way we negotiated the first two European rounds. I was even happy with first Malmo game and thought we were desperately unlucky to only have a 1 goal lead. Then out of the blue we had this week’s horror show and it was like pricking a balloon. All the feel good factor built up was gone in a flash.

    For me the entire Ronny project is at a crossroad, The team owes us big time after the Malmo debacle, pay back needs to start tomorrow, ditch the Ronny Roar , less theatrics and more substance. I won’t give up on him or the team because of one game but I have to admit that my early misgivings are again haunting me.

  15. GlassTwoThirdsFull on

    “In one game it’s not worked for us. Yet, over the course of last season I think domestically we conceded about two goals from set-pieces.

    “But against Malmo we’ve conceded three over two ties. That’s obviously disappointing.

    – ————

    Interesting defence of zonal marking, but you have to realise that in Europe you will face better deliveries, better finishers and more intelligent players and coaches who know how to exploit weaknesses. See Milan 2013 for more evidence…..

  16. Macjay. In 1993 I wrote to Kevin kelly and asked him if there would be investment on the park

    If not I would use the money and join the local golf club

    No reply was forthcoming and as such I boycotted season 93/94. It was hard after watching Celtic home and away since 1979

    But in the end my decision and thousands like me changed things for the better

    Time to stand up and do it again

    So….would they all have got in to todays team?

    Or did they over achieve due to the manager and coaching teams homework and strategy

  18. Corkcelt. In a way I agree with you

    The idea of playing at home preseason was a great idea. We have a great training camp and Scottish summers are not that bad

    Aye,I know. Gave me a perfect lead for a rant though!

    ~~~~~~~~~~++~~~~~~~~~~
    The footballing side is failing because it is being driven by non-footballing interests.
    Our team is seriously weakened by a Chief Executive who faints at the sight of a fiver,whether he’s about to lose it or gain it.
    Engineering companies stagnate when they don’t invest in new machinery. They don’t tend to sell their current stuff then go onto e-bay for a replacement.
    I’ll give you one example as a for instance,our centre-half situation. We knew Denayer was leaving,we know Virgil will. Their replacement is ONE centre-half,older than each,with less than two dozen games.
    That’s not planning for a golden future. That’s ripping the bloody pish.
    Btw,I’m home from 2-18 Oct,so hopefully meet up. I’ll ask SYDNEYTIM to forward my details to you.
    I don’t care how good he has been,his attitude on Tuesday stunk the place out.
    Totally unacceptable.
    Btw,I resisted the temptation for a fish pun. But I still diss-ed him…
  28. SYDNEYTIM The Bayern Munich players celebrated like they won the game at the end of that match too. I remember Michael Ballack being particularly pleased.
    I fear Ronny Deila served his head on a plate with his post-match comments on Tuesday.
    Let’s go back a little…Its clear that there was a concerted effort following the Hamilton defeat last October to pull together and buy-in to the managers ethos – tactically and physically. What was said internally and how the drive was led doesn’t matter but it had the desired effect.
    Move forward to last Tuesday… As has been reported in the press and justifiably so, Tuesday was meant to be the moment where it all came together – Ronny himself fuelled the fire with his pre-match comments. The performance as we know was a car-crash but better Celtic teams and better Celtic managers have suffered the same fate before.
    The problem now isn’t the performance, it’s the reaction in the wake of it… Whether you think his ‘scared’ comments were right or wrong (I happen to think they are right, as it goes) they were not appropriate for the public arena. The situation was then exacerbated by the contradictory comments of his captain and two of his senior players, Commons and Gordon.
    Furthermore, the club’s media department then made it worse by sending John Kennedy out to take the fall for the defensive performance, in what now looks like a botched effort to deflect the attention from the fracture between the manager and his senior players. The cherry on the cake was complete by John’s ‘lost in translation’ muddle.
    Trust takes years to build, seconds to destroy and forever to repair.
    There board has two choices now… It either backs the manager fully in public and private, including giving Ronny a sufficient percentage from the impending van Dijk transfer fee to strengthen the starting XI or it sits back over the next few months to see what the fall-out is in on the park in the form of domestic and early Europa league results before making a call.
    Bad performances we can always remedy but what we sometimes cannot repair without sacrifice(s) is the kind of self-harm that’s been committed across the club over the last 72 hours.
  29. LOL, people anxious about the Penny Dreadful.
    6 wins on the trot against rank amateurs, including two versus a perennially-pish Hibs team.
    They’re a million miles off us, on the pitch and off.
    Might they contest a cup-tie against us? Maybe, for around half an hour until their exhuberance faded and our class kicked in.
    We’re about to be drawn against some of Europe’s elite in the second-ranking tournament. Worry about the Zombies just because some fan-nyboy hacks in the SMSM are wetting their pants? Again. And deluding the Zombie hordes. Again.
