Financial cost and prep for 2016

I reckoned Champions League participation was worth circa £22m to Celtic. By contrast, Europa League football will be worth less than a quarter of that. Ancillary income, such as retail and kiosk sales, will also suffer.

The challenge now is to improve the team without that income. This should not be impossible. Malmo managed it, and we’re not in a situation where the bank is hammering at the door. But what should be clear, is that the next five days represent the best chance to strengthen the team for next August’s qualifiers. There’s a notion that the biggest games of our season come early, but we’ve 11 months to plan for 2016’s biggest games.

Three things to remind you about:

Golfers: buy a raffle ticket for £1 to win a round of golf FOR FOUR PEOPLE at the magnificent Aberdour course in Fife. Competition ends on Saturday, get your tickets here!!! It’s offered by Taggsybhoy, in support of the Foundation.

Aberdour

There’s a Mary’s Meals collection from 1pm on the Celtic Way ahead of the game on Saturday. Ideally we’re looking for backpacks, but handtowels (the school kitchens you paid for have handwashing facilities and each child is given their own handtowel), pencils, rulers, etc.

If the kids got new kit for starting school last week, dig out the old stuff and bring it along.

Magners have kindly donated two Premium Seats in the Jock Stein Stand for Saturday’s games. You can win the tickets by answering this question:

Who is Celtic’s top scorer this season?

Player’s surname in the SUBJECT line of your email to celticquicknews@gmail.com . Competition closes at 22:00 TONIGHT, so not a lot of time to enter.

No call today for a donation, go stick a £1 in Taggsy’s raffle instead. Thanks.

  1. Go tell the Spartim on

Im not advocating DD spending his money on us, im advocating him spending all of our money on the first team

  2. Livibhoy – i rarely read your posts and disagree but you are wide of the mark with your broken down, simplified football.

If we went into Europe with a 442 which included 2 wingers we would be turned over.

  3. With his detailed knowledge of the KPI’s I’ve reached the conclusion that SydneyTim is in fact Peter Lawwell and he uses this forum to vent his frustration at Dermot Desmond, and how his hands are tied.

It’s clearly giving him sleepless nights.

  5. In the dark days of the 1990s, my ambition for Celtic was to compete with Deidco for trophies at home and to have the occasional year of post-Christmas European football. We have achieved this beyond my wildest dreams.

The money men have ruined the beautiful game just like they have ruined everything in history with their miopic devotion to the bottom line. They know the price of everything but the value of nothing and they would sell their granny to improve the balance sheet.

I am bitterly disappointed at Tuesday’s result and the dreadful performance by the team. That had nothing to do with the money men. We can analyse team selection, tactics etc etc ad nauseam. The fact is our players under-performed. It happens. We beat Barcelona; they will feel that should never have happened. For me, the main lesson to be learned is that we could do with a couple of experienced players to steady the ship when things get rocky during a match such as the other night. Such guys will have no sell on value but it will be a price worth paying.

My dad had to suffer the 50s and early 60s. The anger and bile shown on here is way OTT, given the relatively good position we are in today.

We are now minnows in European terms because of the money men. This will not change until the football money men go bust which will happen. I just hope I live to witness it.

In the meantime, I will still support Celtic because I like it. I like most fellow Celtic fans. Win, lose or draw. I have seen glorious victories and terrible defeats and I will still support my team. If that makes me a happy clapper, so be it.

The money men are there to put a good team on the pitch.

    They have failed.

    Ajax ,eh…?

The Amsterdam polis will be polishing up their batons and steel toecaps as we speak.

  8. Oh, no, Ajax. The last team I would want to welcome to CP after their fans behaviour here in the CL and also the way our fans were attacked away from home.

PL must have sighed at the thought of all those empty seats since I fear many will not want to attend that match – and not for footballing reasons.

  10. Ger57. I’m an infrequent poster but just wanted to say your last post was the best I’ve seen in the last few days. Thank you for a much needed dose of realistic optimism.
