Financial cost and prep for 2016

988

I reckoned Champions League participation was worth circa £22m to Celtic. By contrast, Europa League football will be worth less than a quarter of that. Ancillary income, such as retail and kiosk sales, will also suffer.

The challenge now is to improve the team without that income. This should not be impossible. Malmo managed it, and we’re not in a situation where the bank is hammering at the door. But what should be clear, is that the next five days represent the best chance to strengthen the team for next August’s qualifiers. There’s a notion that the biggest games of our season come early, but we’ve 11 months to plan for 2016’s biggest games.

Three things to remind you about:

Golfers: buy a raffle ticket for £1 to win a round of golf FOR FOUR PEOPLE at the magnificent Aberdour course in Fife. Competition ends on Saturday, get your tickets here!!! It’s offered by Taggsybhoy, in support of the Foundation.

Aberdour

There’s a Mary’s Meals collection from 1pm on the Celtic Way ahead of the game on Saturday. Ideally we’re looking for backpacks, but handtowels (the school kitchens you paid for have handwashing facilities and each child is given their own handtowel), pencils, rulers, etc.

If the kids got new kit for starting school last week, dig out the old stuff and bring it along.

Magners have kindly donated two Premium Seats in the Jock Stein Stand for Saturday’s games. You can win the tickets by answering this question:

Who is Celtic’s top scorer this season?

Player’s surname in the SUBJECT line of your email to celticquicknews@gmail.com . Competition closes at 22:00 TONIGHT, so not a lot of time to enter.

No call today for a donation, go stick a £1 in Taggsy’s raffle instead. Thanks.

  1. Does anyone on here think DD knows who we are playing tomorrow? PL runs the club from top to bottom,DD only gets involved if we are looking for a manager……..Roy Keane for example.CFC is a keyring for DD,to show off to his pals.We need a ‘hands on’ owner, who feels the same as us after a result like Tuesday

The games Neil Lennon’s team played in the Europa league vs Athletico Madrid, Rennes and Udinesse set them up for the following season’s qualification.

This is what this campaign must be used for as well as getting rid of the players whose time has come and gone or who will never do a job for the team.

Take what we get but lets hope there are no Russian or Azerbaijan trips.

  3. We really do have to be prepared for next year’s CL qualifiers, first step being, obviously, winning the League. Apart from the money, prestige, opportunity for players to pit themselves against, and supporters to see in the flesh, the best exponents of the game, season 2016-2017 will be the 50th anniversary of the Lisbon triumph. Of all seasons, we’ve got to be in the competition that one.

  4. Interesting programme from BBC world service – http://bbc.in/1UgVpCQ

From 13.25 to 17.55 Parma’s situation is discussed culminating in vice president, Marco Ferrari, stating: “…. a football club is also company”.

Maybe it is only in Italy that this is obvious.

I’m now looking forward to the BBC doing a programme on how parma missed a trick and didn’t need to lose their 111 year history. You just need to use doublespeak.

BEATBHOY. Sorry fella I dont agree firstly Ronny should not have made the comments in public secondly the players should not have responded in public. That kind of talking should be done behind closed doors and the team Captain should back the manager 100% at least in public. The fact that such a big game should end in the shambles for Celtic as it did and the aftermath comments tells me all is not well at Parkhead.H.H.

Good to see you posting but you’re having a laugh (good to see) with regarding the Huns beating us. Player for player we are miles ahead and as a team would leave them dazzled despite our recent poor showings.

Good luck and keep on keeping on.

Don’t always agree with you Kev – but I too thought that McMurdo’s blog was ‘on the money’ and lacking in any sort of real bias – of course he was ‘talking-up’ Sevco a bit – but after all he is a bluenose.

We must never forget the greatness our club achieved in the past – but we must now firmly base ourselves in the football world as it now exists – by doing this and getting ‘more bang for our buck’ surely we can emulate the likes of Malmo and Maribor, and in future again get to the ‘promised land’ of the CL.

Ronny deserves one more season – however I suspect all is not well ‘in the camp’ at the moments, and further ‘weeding’ will need to be done.

We have a strong platform – a good model – wonderful fans – good marketing set-up – great stadium – modern training facilities and good commercial partners – let’s swallow this latest disappointment, re-group, and vow not to make the same mistakes again, HAIL HAIL !!!!!

  8. I heard he was dead

I doubt we’ll prioritise a left back and Janko will be alternated with Efe at right back, we signed a million midfielders since Ronny came so I doubt we will go batshit in that department either.

I’m seriously hoping that VVD’s replacement deal is well on or we could really struggle, I see a few on here saying move Mikael over there, I don’t think we have to discuss that idea any further as a solution, he’ll be watching from the sidelines most likely.

As for strikers after last Tuesday I’m actually dreading the next off the JP conveyor belt of Euro talent:))

I guess we’ll see one or two loan deals and if we’re lucky one or two coming in.

    Time is tight!

The worst thing for me on Tuesday and I think his Sutton’s analysis was spot on, we never have anybody in the box, Janko fired a few decent crosses in as did Charlie and in this respect I don’t understand our system. We move forward and then aimlessly launch the ball into the box where the forwards are three steps behind the game or not attacking the ball or not getting across the defender. I think Big Chris nailed it when he tells you what a decent striker should be doing in those situations.

Do you know one Chris that want to come on board:))

  9. Kev. Good to see you posting

I remember a night when I lived in Dresden

We played b Munich at home and I watched it in a pub in Dresden. About 30 Celtic fans and 30 Munich fans Final score 0 0 the Munich fans were celebrating. I was not happy but then again I was proud and felt ten feet tall

Yes we could not substain that spending. But did our club go out of business. No it was great for the fans

Now it’s an embarrassment that clubs with less financial clout than us walk over us

    Lawwell must go

  10. The_huddle

He gave the media their first question for the players, who won’t have known the slight difference you point out. My point to Joe was that it wasn’t a reason to drop them for tomorrow.

The lack of heart and fight you mention might be, though, if Ronny hasn’t liked what he’s heard from the players since Tuesday on those issues. There were enough signs of it after the first 20 minutes, so the manager must take some responsibility for not sending them out second half with more fear of him than Malmo.

The only bad luck we got, and it was a sizeable chunk, was the ridiculous disallowing of our goal just before half-time, although some have mentioned a handball for one of their goals too.

    starry plough

I think it is unlikely that we’ll get 5 players in by Tuesday. You’re probably right about Ambrose covering for Lustig or Janko but getting in another left back is probably going to happen.

The Striker position is as you say one of trepidation given John Park’s record to date but surely to God they can find one decent player and sign him permanently.

The last day of the transfer window will probably see a lot of moving going on. I’d settle for 3 in –

    Striker

    Centre half

    Left back

and get the other 2 or 3 we need in January.

If there is anything in this Ryan Christie Rumour – buy and loan back – then at least there is some forward planning going on. Hopefully Liam Henderson comes back ready to go as well along with the boy on loan at St Mirren.

I like that kind of forward planning provided it bears fruit.

As things stand no one has bid for VVD so after their Euro exit do Southampton still want him?

    It’s a waiting game.

  13. JFH

We agree more than you think. It was saying it inpublic that was the mistake If Ronny wants to use emotive words, he should be wary of what the press will do with them. He can say what he likes to them in the privacy of the dressing room. I don’t think he should cut off his nose to spite his face in this instance by dropping the Skipper tomorrow, certainly.

  14. “But what should be clear, is that the next five days represent the best chance to strengthen the team for next August’s qualifiers.”

Any transfer activity in the next few days will for me be a case of too little too late. However we do need to act now as Paul suggests for next August.

Not holding my breath but our shopping list should include….

An experienced Center forward in the mould of Rosenberg

Attacking midfielder a Naka, Lubo or Maloney type player a true number 10,

Defensive midfield destroyer to play behind Brown & Bitton

A more defensive minded left back not as a replacement for Izzy but another option

One or maybe two Central defenders. Like the striking position, some experience here wouldn’t go a miss.

Sadly apart from a replacement for Virgil, I’m not holding my breath we’ll sign any of the above.

    Hope to be proved wrong

As we speak John Park is rumbling about a big black bag with names written on pieces of paper:))

There will be some movement that’s for sure, the Ryan Christie rumour is a good one I like what little I’ve seen of him.

Be strange now if Virgil doesn’t go and if he doesn’t go I expect him to be fully focused on the job at hand which I think he will be, he’s a decent professional.

If he does stay it would give him time to have the same kind of understanding with Boyata as he had with Jason D. The wee man really was a stand out last year and made big Virgil’s job a whole lot easier.

    Bring on the draw!

    “zonal marking”

    “man for man marking”

All teams use both systems to varying degrees. It’s all defending, and simply a matter of where and how you use your players.

Let’s take a typical corner: The attacking team have one man taking the kick, two men at the half way line, another covering the clearance at 25-30 yards. Of their 10 outfield players, 4 are not involved in the cross. This of course varies according to the tactic of the attacking team and the stage in the game. We’ve seen goalkeepers up for corners for example.

But, at a typical corner at a regular point in the match, the attacking team will have maximum of 6 players in the box. This holds true for both of Malmo’s goals on Tuesday.

The defending team has a goalkeeper plus 10 players available to defend. Often one will be situated up the park and wide as the out ball, and another will be deployed near the edge of the box.

So, that leaves 8 plus a goalkeeper to cover 6 attacking players. If you go ‘man for man’ you’ll have 2 spare, who are always deployed in a “zone”, sometimes on the 6 yard line, other times at either post – the thinking here is to reduce the effective size of the goal.

If you go ‘zonal’, typically you’ll put your three tallest players along the 6 yard line – front, mid, back – another inside the front post, and another inside the backpost, In this manner, you have 5 defenders plus the goalkeeper inside the 6 yard box and within the frame of the goal.

That leaves 3 players who are generally used to ‘man mark’ those opposition players considered most dangerous.

There are myriad perms in this set up, and of course, the set up needs to adjust according to the tactics of the attacking team.

Nevertheless, zonal and man marking are little more than variations on the same play. On Tuesday night for example, we defended corners with a different ‘zonal’ set up in the second half as opposed to the first.

Fact is, corner kicks are one of the last remaining parts of the game where the Dark Arts are permitted to flourish. The goals we lost were both a consequence of the ‘spare’ men failing to run ‘interference’ on the attacker who scored.

What was also interesting is that the ‘spare’ men seemed to take up a position in parallel to the 6 yard line, about 4 yards further out. They didn’t move.

Whether that was by design, be default, or delinquency only the players and coaching staff can say, but it was pretty stupid.

And that’s the point. You defend with the brain as well as the body. Doesn’t matter how many big guys you’ve got or how they’re used. If they’re stupid, you lose.

Zonal or Man Marking: It’s largely irrelevant. Down with stupid defending!

Nothing to do with The Celtic Trust,MACJAY. A cheap shot, and disingenuous with it.

The point which PFAYR,myself and others are making is that footballing strategy is being driven by non-footballing people at the club,or PLC. Indeed, the footballing side of things is supporting the PLC,not the other way round.

Peter Lawwell is so focussed on having net cash in the bank that I wonder what he is worried about? The sky falling in,a la Asterix? His manager having a higher and more successful profile than he has? Not being the top-earner?

I dunno why,I merely surmise. But few if any clubs have achieved success without pushing the boat out. And it won’t happen while we have risk-averse bean-counters controlling EVERY lever of the footballing operation.

PL needs to learn the difference between prudence and parsimony. (I stole that line from an unashamed happyclapper, btw)

We went into a massive game with only one goal scorer in the entire squad

This is a massive failure caused all the way to the top

In any business a CEO with poor results ( ps we are a football club not a corporate identity ) would be removed Every CL for last 4 years has been poorly planned from the top

Same will happen next year if PL is in charge

Question is what can we do

If I still lived at home I would still go to games home and away but would put my pound in my pocket when it comes to merchandise

Maybe time for Celts for change two

If enough fans said no merchandise then things would Change

  20. At the present time PL will not meet his bonus

At this present time PL is trying to get best price for VVD

He will then get his bonus

Our club is not about CL or players on the park it is all about PL bonus

Wake up and smell the coffee

  21. Saw an on-line paper suggesting the following for us in today’s draw.

Best case scenario – Marseille (pot one), Rapid Vienna/Augsburg (pot three), Molde/Sion (pot four)

Worst case scenario – Rubin Kazan/Dnipro (pot one), Fenerbahce (pot three), Partizan Belgrade (pot four)

Personally I think it could be – Ajax (pot one), Legia Warsaw (pot 3), and Sion (pot four). Just for old times sake, you know? Oh, and a wee bit of flavour!

  22. See Southampton got dumped out of Europe by a Danish club last night. Nothing is certain in Europe against teams well into their season. Pretty daunting Champions League group for Malmo.

  23. For all the talk of a need for a Left Back, Izzy did a great defensive job against Qarabag.

I’m not suggesting we don’t have an issue a full back , we do!! However, we are as much in need of a Right Back as Lustig is permanently injured.

I’d like to see Ciftci getting a run once the ban is ended to give him a fair chance, as Leigh Grifiths was, along with others, invisible the other night.

The full backs and a striker are needed (the key here is to have experience in at least one of these). We are leaderless when Brown is not there and when he looks unfit.

I was addressing a thread on another topic. I can’t hold PL responsible for Brown and Bitton being stupid at corner kicks on Tuesday night.

Fact is, the performance as a whole on the night was a complete fail, top to bottom.

How much of that is down to matters that were under the influence of the players and coaching staff, and how much to the business model being currently implemented is fertile soil for debate.
