Financial cost and prep for 2016

988

I reckoned Champions League participation was worth circa £22m to Celtic. By contrast, Europa League football will be worth less than a quarter of that. Ancillary income, such as retail and kiosk sales, will also suffer.

The challenge now is to improve the team without that income. This should not be impossible. Malmo managed it, and we’re not in a situation where the bank is hammering at the door. But what should be clear, is that the next five days represent the best chance to strengthen the team for next August’s qualifiers. There’s a notion that the biggest games of our season come early, but we’ve 11 months to plan for 2016’s biggest games.

Three things to remind you about:

Golfers: buy a raffle ticket for £1 to win a round of golf FOR FOUR PEOPLE at the magnificent Aberdour course in Fife. Competition ends on Saturday, get your tickets here!!! It’s offered by Taggsybhoy, in support of the Foundation.

Aberdour

There’s a Mary’s Meals collection from 1pm on the Celtic Way ahead of the game on Saturday. Ideally we’re looking for backpacks, but handtowels (the school kitchens you paid for have handwashing facilities and each child is given their own handtowel), pencils, rulers, etc.

If the kids got new kit for starting school last week, dig out the old stuff and bring it along.

Magners have kindly donated two Premium Seats in the Jock Stein Stand for Saturday’s games. You can win the tickets by answering this question:

Who is Celtic’s top scorer this season?

Player’s surname in the SUBJECT line of your email to celticquicknews@gmail.com . Competition closes at 22:00 TONIGHT, so not a lot of time to enter.

No call today for a donation, go stick a £1 in Taggsy’s raffle instead. Thanks.

Can’t agrre with you there entirely. It wasn’t Ronny running about the midfield like a headless chicken Tuesday night.

The players would have had their brief before the game. They hid.

The loss of Denayer was a major blow for us and apparently beyond our control.

This affected imho the performance of the much criticised V.V.D.

Those two had a very effective double act which would have been very hard to reconstruct at short notice.

Apart from that factor,I wouldn`t blame the performance of the players at all.

    Ronny.

I had severe doubts about his ability very soon after his arrival. His body language suggests he shares my doubts. The “Ronny Roar” underlines his feelings of self doubt.

When you`ve “got it “,you don`t need public shows of hubris.

His team selections have been mystifying. His substitutions equally so.

I fear he will leave at some point this season or soon after under a cloud.

    Fervently hope I`m wrong.

  5. Shutup ryecatcher ya Hun-loving prick; infesting the blog since Tuesday with yer lame alter-ego and anti-Celtic pish.

Anyone who knows football will have raised an eyerow tonight at the Southampton result. No solace for us but confirmation that a well-organised professional side with a fearles sattitude can turn the odds.

Those damn Scandinavian sides – Swedish and Danish champions performing well above expectations.

Now we need to offload VVD as quickly as possible. Completely stunne dme with his lapses in both Malmo games. No argument can justify his extant presence at CP; unable to marshall his defence/command his area and lost 3 vital identikit goals from corners – why on earth would we want to keep any wantaway centre half under these damning stats let alone have the chance to offload him for £10 million. Bite the hand off the English mugs.

As for getting a striker in – lmao; any striker RD desires has to be superman. I always though Scepovic could be a star in the Sutton mould if paired up, but RD will not play a striking partnership; seems antithetical to his footballing ‘philosophy’ to go with 2 up front. If we’d gone 4-4-2 at 2-0 v Malmo we’d have murdered them. But we play percentages, becasue that’s the one-trick-pony way.

We’ve all watched this ‘dynamic’ tactic for a year now, we’ve condemned then admired it when it worked. But how often HAS it worked? In crucial games, I mean? Good sides are taking a look at us close-up in the first encounter then nullifying us and picking us off next meeting. We seem all fur coat and no nickers.

I was after RD’s head on here after Maribor; all I saw there was Tony Mowbray blind optimism and no pragmatism. I am still willing to eat my words and let him roll on if he can just get over himself a little; the Ronny roar needs binned and the Ronnyknow-how needs displayed more. There MUST be more to him, and Celtic, than this one-dimensional relentless-runaround hopeful open football. Where’s the guile and the savvy?

Show us something, Ronny, or it’ll be more than just me asking if the wannabe emperor’s actually got his breeks on.

  7. Bought the sun and daily rangers today, I know I shouldn’t but just wanted to read what crap the jurnos were spouting. I know we’ve said this all before but this is my opinion for what its worth

    1. How can we be competitive in Europe when we have to continually play most weeks against poor opposition in spfl.

    2. How is it that when the other Scottish clubs get pumped out of Europe by minnows they get praise for being in Europe in the first place.

This is just a small number of questions that I will be emailing both these rags. I’m really hoping for a so called football jouno to reply then I will really get stuck in.

Will post comments if they’re man enough to tell the truth.

  8. the glorious balance sheet on

    Swayno

It’s not the spfl’s fault that Celtic are woeful in European qualifiers.

Bate borisov do not play against world beaters in Belarus. Each year they enter CL qualifiers at qualifying round 2 and each year they make the group stages. 5 times out of the last 6 years they’ve qualified.

Playing in a poor league is no hindrance to them.

And the lack of quality in the SPFL means we can rest a whole team as we did on Saturday for the CL and still win. We need to look inward for answers on why Tuesday happened not look to blame others

  9. Just a general answer to the lacking ambition charge made in response to what I consider a realistic post.

Ambition has to be balanced by the ability to meet it.

A 5ft 1 guy might have the ambition to play for Boston Celtics but it would be foolish in extreme to ignore the gap between his ambition and the ability to achieve it.

Things are what they are. Things change but only over time. Patience is not a lack of ambition it the art of ENJOYING what is. The key word being joy.

Some folk don’t seem to want to be joyful. It is an ambition I would encourage in them although I fear some lack the natural ability.

  10. This will be essential reading for me as he keeps posting.

Celtic were very poor on Tuesday.

Time is up for Commons, Mulgrew, Stokes and even Broonie, IMO.

Too many times, even in just ‘Domestic’ games these guys have been poor in games that would’ve lead to Silverware, everyone knows what the CL means to Celtic.

    Mate.

I really am not well enough informed about the “Celtic business model.”

I really am not in a position to judge.

I imagine (am I naive?) that our Board stewards ( no puns please ) have the best interests of Celtic at heart.

As long as the mistakes which they have made have been made with the best of intentions ,then that is something which is acceptable.

To the extent that they are responsible for the decision to appoint a “rookie” coach, who has been a very expensive failure, then they must accept the rap.

    However……..the first.the most important move is………….

    Move Ronny on….or

    Move him sideways.

We Celtic are a global organisation,a global entity.

We cannot accept mediocrity. Being also rans.

    Never.

If our Board do not act to change what must be changed, then I`ll be in your court.

  24. When we signed Rafeal Scheidt with JB and KD in charge we wasted £5 million as was a complete imposter for a football player, useless , agreed. Now in 2013 we sign the hospital case Derk Boerigter for 2 to 3 million pounds, a football player with ability but injury prone beyond belief and the heart of a mouse. Who actually scouted and sanctioned these 2 signings should be sacked if there is any connection, unfit for purpose applies to both the players and the scouts and those that agreed to sign them. Ajax even said he was injury prone and yet we took him , not at a knockdown price but for full value. Shocking waste of money and how with his record did he ever pass our medical, god knows. Now i know that every signing won’t be a world beater but our failure rate of late for strikers is abysmal imo, somebody has to be held to account, millions wasted and holding us back. rant over. HH

Yea but asking 4 Strangers to Zonal Mark is…..?

Former Celtic ace Kennedy defends Hoops’ set-play tactics in Malmo defeat

THE zonal marking system which spectacularly failed Celtic in the Champions League is here to stay.

Former Hoops defender John Kennedy is adamant the errors that cost the Hoops dearly in their 4-3 aggregate loss to Malmo were down to individual mistakes.

Ronny Deila’s side shipped three goals from basic corners over the two legs – much to the dismay of Kennedy who takes responsibility for Celtic’s set-up at set-pieces.

But he maintains the plan works when players are switched on, and that’s the issue that needs to be addressed as the Bhoys await today’s Europa League draw.

Kennedy said: “I have to take as much responsibility as anyone for set-plays and being ready for them. I shoulder the blame for part of that.

“As we move on we’ll look to tweak things and improve. But it’s something that’s stood us in good stead in the past and we’ll make sure if there are any problems we’ll fix them.

“When you concede with zonal marking, the debate starts. But when you concede from man-marking no one bats an eyelid.

“We worked on zonal marking, we firmly believe in it, the players we have we think are suited to it.

“In one game it’s not worked for us. Yet, over the course of last season I think domestically we conceded about two goals from set-pieces.

“But against Malmo we’ve conceded three over two ties. That’s obviously disappointing.

“For me when you man-mark – for instance if we put Virgil van Dijk on someone – he can take him out to the back area where it’s not a danger.

Celtic legend Pat Bonner mystified by Hoops tactics

“But that also means you can be isolated in other areas of the box, so we put our big guys in the areas we think are the most dangerous.

“It’s worked in the past, although I accept it didn’t on Tuesday night. But it’s not just down solely to zonal marking. You look at the whole performance and it just wasn’t good enough.”

The two killer goals in Malmo – the first from Markus Rosenberg and the second an own-goal by Dedryk Boyata both came from regular set-pieces.

Celtic have conceded 28 goals in 20 Euro ties, which Kennedy admits must change before the Europa League starts.

He added: “In Europe we have been careless with our defending at times. You look back at some of the goals we have conceded and they have been poor.

“It has cost us dearly at this stage which is disappointing. We need to make sure it is fixed for the next time around in Europe.”

Hoops boss Deila held talks with staff and players at Lennoxtown yesterday as he picked through the debris of Tuesday’s performance.

Kennedy added: “We discuss things, we look at the facts and we will look at the videos and ask questions.

“As a group there is no one pointing fingers. Players, staff, we are all in it together and we know that the other night just wasn’t good enough.”

Celtic are in pot two of the Europa League draw which takes place in Monaco at lunchtime today, while on the domestic front they will kick off the defence of the League Cup with a home clash with Raith Rovers next month.
