Financial cost and prep for 2016

988

I reckoned Champions League participation was worth circa £22m to Celtic. By contrast, Europa League football will be worth less than a quarter of that. Ancillary income, such as retail and kiosk sales, will also suffer.

The challenge now is to improve the team without that income. This should not be impossible. Malmo managed it, and we’re not in a situation where the bank is hammering at the door. But what should be clear, is that the next five days represent the best chance to strengthen the team for next August’s qualifiers. There’s a notion that the biggest games of our season come early, but we’ve 11 months to plan for 2016’s biggest games.

Three things to remind you about:

Golfers: buy a raffle ticket for £1 to win a round of golf FOR FOUR PEOPLE at the magnificent Aberdour course in Fife. Competition ends on Saturday, get your tickets here!!! It’s offered by Taggsybhoy, in support of the Foundation.

Aberdour

There’s a Mary’s Meals collection from 1pm on the Celtic Way ahead of the game on Saturday. Ideally we’re looking for backpacks, but handtowels (the school kitchens you paid for have handwashing facilities and each child is given their own handtowel), pencils, rulers, etc.

If the kids got new kit for starting school last week, dig out the old stuff and bring it along.

Magners have kindly donated two Premium Seats in the Jock Stein Stand for Saturday’s games. You can win the tickets by answering this question:

Who is Celtic’s top scorer this season?

Player’s surname in the SUBJECT line of your email to celticquicknews@gmail.com . Competition closes at 22:00 TONIGHT, so not a lot of time to enter.

No call today for a donation, go stick a £1 in Taggsy’s raffle instead. Thanks.

Agree with a lot of what u said and u said it well.

Like u , I went all through the cheating years , the European embarrassments and the sense of frustration seeing deidco and their cheating ways trample over the top of us. Hoping for a crumb.

Martin O’Neill was a blessing for us.

He regrouped us, gave us belief and bought quality.

Never did I think I would travel to see my team in a European final.

I thank God every day for Martin.

Whilst Tuesday’s result is still raw, and I rage at the lack of investment ( coz Martin proves with a bit of cash we can do anything) my love of club will never diminish .

    Hail Hail sir

  2. embramike says "the Huns are Deid" on

So Holland, Turkey and Norway matches – could have been worse. Sure that the behaviour of our opponents’ fans will be well monitored in advance.

We need to concentrate on what’s happening on the pitch and I think we can progress to the last 32 with this draw.

  3. Captain Beefheart on

    Good group. Can qualify.

Ajax aren’t very good for a top seed.

    Will we invest?

  4. dr ramesh and the love potion on

Exciting draw. It should be a good experience because all of the teams will be tough to beat, good atmospheres in the stadiums, different types of football….but everyone is beatable. Bring it on!

oh, and buy a striker please. Otherwise we will get nowhere

  5. Had to be Norway. So how come the team who spent 20 Million squid on two of our players ( allegedly ) didn’t even get into the EL. Southampton must be pash. Their board and manager must be as bad as oors. Would have really liked a spurs draw, would have watched it with my big Yiddish mate.

  6. Europa League….Boooo

    Poor substitute.

Ajax, Fenerbache, Molde….we couldn’t beat Malmo, so its not going to be pretty.

Maybe we will get a loan signing to cheer us all up:(

    HH

  7. Captain Beefheart

The significance of the Southampton defeat is that it demonstrates that the money paid to players is not an accurate measure over any one or two games of what result can be expected.

Put Southampton opponents into same league as them and I’d expect Southampton to come out on top.

    Same with Malmo and us.

The reason for that is that the extra wages allows for more cover at a particular standard by paying for more players.

You either spend the wages on higher quality in one or two positions and hope their absence, as will surely happen over a season, does not affect the final outcome or you reduce the risk by spreading the spend.

One interesting feature of TRFC is that they are playing with a limited squad in number terms to get the quality to take them out of their division. That quality does not have to be expensively high in their case. That changes as they come up. It will be interesting to see how that smaller squad gets on.

Other factors that affect the chances of qualifying in what is a series of cup ties where a bad ref decision can put the better team out are match fitness – move the season, the perception of Scotland as a football backwater and it is near the truth which hampers recruitment or adds a premium to the wages – churn rate which means every season we start either replacing the manager or players who have demonstrated, after negotiating the cup ties , they ARE CL standard.

All of these factors, including that for 30 mins in the first game we played like a CL team, should be taken into account when passing judgement.

Those that do are accused of lacking ambition. I would say that those that don’t are lacking another word.

It was a cup tie. We lost. It does not mean we are a bad team, splilt dressing rooms, RD is a bad manager etc – unless you want it to and why would any rational Celtic supporter want that strife?

Things are as they are. How we react to things, which is emotionally driven, or respond to them, which follows when the disappointment wanes, is what matters.

Football is an emotional outlet and it might be ok to park our brains on the bus before going through the gate but after the match, sooner or later the brain needs to be engaged.

That word for what is lacking is not ambition. The word is fortitude. It’s arrival is a sign of growing up.

  8. I heard he was dead on

Not what I wanted but we’ve never played a Turkish team so that’s new.

We should be aiming for second place at worst in that group.

I watched Ajax yesterday. They were guff. Worse than us but got through luckily vs Jablonec who missed a penalty.

It would be good to stick it to De Boer.

Molde we must beat home and away and hope we don’t play them in December cos it will be freezing.

  9. HAs the look of a champions league group so far

Apart from getting washers from uefa, of course. And naebody buying tickets. And the music is different. and it’s on a Thursday. Etc.

  10. In another year this could be UEFA CL group. It will be as hard to get out of without the financial compensation. Did Jason sign for Fernabahce? HH

  11. Could be final nail in lawell coffin group

This is our level says the happy clapper mob

Aye right league cup is our level

Poor fans they will need a suit of armour for these away trips

  12. No lack of experience in Fener squad. Apart from Van Persie, there’s Nani, Diego, Raul Mareilles, Bruno Alves, and the Liverpool player Markovic supposed to be going there on loan. Some past their best, I’d imagine, but still difficult opponents I’d imagine.

  13. Captain Beefheart on

Starry difficult to avoid the infestation of mediocrity but Molde will just have to do.

  14. I know it’s not the champions league but come the night we play Ajax, I won’t care. Great draw .

  15. Good ties – let’s put disappointment behind us and embrace this Group – it will be a good test with interesting matches – onward ever onward.

A few days to sort out the squad – let’s do it – HH

  16. As good as draw as we could have hoped for. Tougher than last year but far more attractive teams in Ajax and Fenerbache. Hopefully we’ll have none of the closing the top tier nonsense.

  17. The interesting thing about Ajax is that they have a develop and sell policy that sees them yo yo ing between the CL and EL.

I’m not sure what other factors cause that. I’d imagine they are run on a sustainable basis too, lose better players to German or English clubs or when their season starts.

I’m not sure hoe AQN reacted to CL failure my Dutch is not goot. Has their been cries to sack their manager?

  18. Re my previous post.

  20. What a draw! It will be tough, but if we perform, we can qualify from that group.

Did Souness not make an a..e of himself on the Fernabahce centre circle? An idea for a GB banner perhaps?

  21. Draw could have been kinder.

Never mind by the time of match day one we will have re-invested the VvD money in four quality signings.
