Financial cost and prep for 2016

988

I reckoned Champions League participation was worth circa £22m to Celtic. By contrast, Europa League football will be worth less than a quarter of that. Ancillary income, such as retail and kiosk sales, will also suffer.

The challenge now is to improve the team without that income. This should not be impossible. Malmo managed it, and we’re not in a situation where the bank is hammering at the door. But what should be clear, is that the next five days represent the best chance to strengthen the team for next August’s qualifiers. There’s a notion that the biggest games of our season come early, but we’ve 11 months to plan for 2016’s biggest games.

Three things to remind you about:

Golfers: buy a raffle ticket for £1 to win a round of golf FOR FOUR PEOPLE at the magnificent Aberdour course in Fife. Competition ends on Saturday, get your tickets here!!! It’s offered by Taggsybhoy, in support of the Foundation.

Aberdour

There’s a Mary’s Meals collection from 1pm on the Celtic Way ahead of the game on Saturday. Ideally we’re looking for backpacks, but handtowels (the school kitchens you paid for have handwashing facilities and each child is given their own handtowel), pencils, rulers, etc.

If the kids got new kit for starting school last week, dig out the old stuff and bring it along.

Magners have kindly donated two Premium Seats in the Jock Stein Stand for Saturday’s games. You can win the tickets by answering this question:

Who is Celtic’s top scorer this season?

Player’s surname in the SUBJECT line of your email to celticquicknews@gmail.com . Competition closes at 22:00 TONIGHT, so not a lot of time to enter.

No call today for a donation, go stick a £1 in Taggsy’s raffle instead. Thanks.

  1. West End of East End on

I was totally gutted on Tuesday, worst I’ve felt after a game for a long time. It was the was we lost that sickened me the most, but I’m actually looking forward to the game at the weekend. No idea if he will shake it up and play Scott Allan or not, but I’ll be interested to see the reaction of both the players and supporters….

Just my luck! Hoped to get Real Madrid or even Ahthletico in the CL and what happens ? We get knocked out and the winners get RM! Next option is Villareal or some team from ‘the best league in the world’ BTW , surely no-one really expects us to beat any of the teams in pots 1 and 2 in a two leg affair. Getting to see these levels of players at CP is good enough for me and we might even sneak a win on the night! As one of the supporters at the 6-1 mauling in Barcelona, I enjoyed it all.Surely that’s what Celtic supporters do! I moan, shout, swear at the TV but never boo the hoops.Must be an age thing. When you win nothing all trophies are magic.

    1) Who are we talking about here?

    Virgil the guy you mentioned.

    2) So we were planning on the possibility of Virgil picking up a career threatening injury?

I don’t buy this at all but let’s just say this is correct. We have other assets to make up the 50% short fall.

Funny way to frame it. We were not PLANNING for VVD to get an injury. We were factoring in that very real possibilty.

Who are these other assets? VVD was the only one currently attracting that level of bid, I believe. It is a long time since Forrest was valued thus and Johansen, at best, would only fetch half what VVD will bring. Bitton would need another good season and Craig will need another 6 months injury free before his form brings a commensurate bid.

    3) I wouldn’t have sold him pre qualifying but we would have had an understanding as we do now. There would have been no downside at all.

An “understanding”, you say? And that would have kept him focused? As I understand it, such an “understanding’ was already in place and yet VVD had a poor-ish game.

    4) It’s the “same old same old” that many fans are legitimately concerned with”

And yet it remains a better option than making things worse, which was my point. I don’t doubt the legitimacy of the concerns. My doubt is about the cocksuredness of the remedy proposed.

  4. Looking forward to Saturday, based on form in the last week, this would be my team

    . Gordon

    Janko Boyata. O’Connell. Izzy

    . Rogic. Armstrong

    Forrest Commons. Allan

    . Griffiths

    Should blow St J away.

GMS to replace Allan or Forrest second half.

Efe to replace O’Connell later on

Scepovic to have a run later on as well as he is our only available striker(Stokes has naturally morphed away from CF either by design or not cutting it in training)

  5. I’m also in awe of those bloggers who claim to know who every Celtic player was signed by..ie.. a PL here..John Park there..NFL everywhere ;-). I have pretty good connections in football especially at Parkhead over the years and never heard about PL signing players with the managers say so.

PL has input in nearly every Celtic player sign, John Park works with the manager, who also takes other advice. Nobody has been signed to play in the first team the manager hasn’t given the go head on.

I also can’t take Ellboy’s view’s seriously, telling us with hindsight that Berget should still be at Parkhead, well not many said that when he was here..mainly it was get rid quicker than The bottom Line ! How he also knows how much Calum’s “Lucrative Contract ” is valued at is good going. Even so, Calum was highly thought of at Notts County so surely it makes perfect sense to tie him up on a longer contract to safeguard any potential transfer fee if sold or to protect us if he developed into a good first team player.

  6. world peace is none of your business on

only thing that annoys me about celtic fans is how quick they are to judge a player, some players dont even get a full game and theyr crap.all it takes is one person to say it and it seems to stick.

I have removed the second racist post. Thanks for pointing it out.

Paul asked me to remove the first one earlier but I was at my boy’s rugby so was an hour away from computer. Paul removed it on his phone but it was awkward as he was in the school.

That’s the first, and hopefully the last time I have to go into the Comments section.

Meanwhile BRTH by coincidence send me over a feature to run on CQN.

If every CQNer who has been outraged by the racist moron who infested the blog tonight reads this and gives a couple of quid, think of the difference it will make to these young children. The Paradise Steps Group – just another example of what makes Celtic special.

  9. wycombebhoy-Tony Mowbray had to Google ‘Edson Brafied’,when he appeared at Lennoxtown one morning.

  10. Let Allan be the playmaker,Commons, his sub.Time we did away with the old thinking, tried something new.All we are getting,is the same old, same old.Tierney looks a great prospect at LB,play him more.O;Connel looks the biz at CH,give him games.Get a young vibrant team on the park.We have a few hears to make them great.

Rd is shackled by the demands of the fans, give him breathing space.

    “Hears”,should be years.

  11. Southampton, despite playing in a league where you are tested and have to think quickly enough are oot on their erchie.

I bet than when Berget left Celtic Park last week, he was wearing a fez, gold coloured pantaloons, and rumpilstilskin slippers.

He will now turn up in Kazakstan.

  15. Marseille,Monaco,Ajax,(out)Southampton,,not even getting to the group stage.I wonder if their fans will boycott the Europa league.

Celtic Fans,a bunch of overhyped Prima Donnas

    Away and gies fekin peace.

  16. West End of East End on

Do the English teams take the Europa league seriously ? To them the EPL is the be all and end all…that’s why Virgil is willing to go there….

  17. Just realised it was Morten Rasmussen who put Southampton out

Another player who wasn’t given a chance to shine and shipped out

    Will Scepovic be next?

  18. Sorry guys, most EPL teams are not interested in Europa League,it interfears with their league status ie .,too many games ,that could result in losing their place in the best league in The World.

We are where we are,but,Paul67 we will never be as low to allow a shit bag, excuse the language ,racist to disgrace our club and your forum.
