Financial cost and prep for 2016

988

I reckoned Champions League participation was worth circa £22m to Celtic. By contrast, Europa League football will be worth less than a quarter of that. Ancillary income, such as retail and kiosk sales, will also suffer.

The challenge now is to improve the team without that income. This should not be impossible. Malmo managed it, and we’re not in a situation where the bank is hammering at the door. But what should be clear, is that the next five days represent the best chance to strengthen the team for next August’s qualifiers. There’s a notion that the biggest games of our season come early, but we’ve 11 months to plan for 2016’s biggest games.

Three things to remind you about:

Golfers: buy a raffle ticket for £1 to win a round of golf FOR FOUR PEOPLE at the magnificent Aberdour course in Fife. Competition ends on Saturday, get your tickets here!!! It’s offered by Taggsybhoy, in support of the Foundation.

Aberdour

There’s a Mary’s Meals collection from 1pm on the Celtic Way ahead of the game on Saturday. Ideally we’re looking for backpacks, but handtowels (the school kitchens you paid for have handwashing facilities and each child is given their own handtowel), pencils, rulers, etc.

If the kids got new kit for starting school last week, dig out the old stuff and bring it along.

Magners have kindly donated two Premium Seats in the Jock Stein Stand for Saturday’s games. You can win the tickets by answering this question:

Who is Celtic’s top scorer this season?

Player’s surname in the SUBJECT line of your email to celticquicknews@gmail.com . Competition closes at 22:00 TONIGHT, so not a lot of time to enter.

No call today for a donation, go stick a £1 in Taggsy’s raffle instead. Thanks.

Looks like Victor Wanyama is moving on according to the BBC.

Southampton are 0-1 down and 2-1 down on aggregate against the Danish Champions tonight.

Victor was not selected because he has been linked with a move.

    —————

Wanyama like De Gea, Berihno (West Brom), Lescott and Stones are finding out that the clubs have so much money now in England that they don’t need to sell anyone. So these guys will sit on the bench until the end of the month.

  3. If there is a little fund raiser for TCR to send him on a wee holiday when he recovers, I’m in. However issues like that can be sensitive. We would need a bit of advice from someone who knows him personally like Coors Lad.

However I commend WITS suggestion. Not the one about Blacks, Chinese & the Irish.

  4. SETTING FREE THE BEARS

“There are a few points are involved in waiting:-

“1) You play the qualifying tie with an experienced CL hardened player rather than a newbie- even a £5m newbie”

CL hardened player? Who are we talking about here? Seven of our starters v Malmo had never played champions league football.

“2) You now have a fit sellable asset, having completed the qualifying process (with only Europa qualification gained). Virgil could have got crocked during the qualifying ties.”

So we were planning on the possibility of Virgil picking up a career threatening injury?

I don’t buy this at all but let’s just say this is correct. We have other assets to make up the 50% short fall.

“3) If he had been sold already but asked to play the qualifying ties, his mind may have been elsewhere (in fact, I suspect this scenario was at play with VVD) resulting in a loss of form.”

I wouldn’t have sold him pre qualifying but we would have had an understanding as we do now. There would have been no downside at all.

Who knows, we may have qualified and had a better chance of keeping the big man for the group games. He may have fancied it and delayed his move until January?

“4) He might have changed his mind and stayed if he saw signs we were becoming a CL level team. These contrary ideas are not hard to generate. There is usually an upside and a downside to any decision. Too many fans think things can only get better after a change. There are always 3 options- better, worse, and same old same old.”

It’s the “same old same old” that many fans are legitimately concerned with.

  5. blantyretim is praying for the Knox family on

Marspapa asked re a collection for tcr earlier on in the week and coorslads said he would keep us informed of anything

  6. Every time we play against an ex Celt in Europe the questions are asked why we got rid especially when things like Berget and Malmo happen

Sometimes good players just don’t fit the system you play.

De Bruyne failed at Chelsea now valued at fifty million by Wolfsberg being an extreme example.

Matic did not get a look in under previous Chelsea coach was sold for very little and bought back for around thirty million by Mourinho and was a huge factor in Chelsea winning the league.

All players have their strengths and weaknesses it’s all about finding a system that maximizes their strengths and covers their limitations.

Ah that pesky stomach bug again.

Frankly, since Victor’s last name translates as ‘meat eater’ in Swahili – what does he expect.

(Mrs RWE’s close pal lives in Nairobi.)

I think he’ll be meat eating in a blue or red jersey soon :o)

That covers about everyone with serious money in the Eepil

  10. To be fair, Pele was a rubbish centre half in the Edison under 13s, so they pushed him up front.

A fair point. My point though was that not too many posters were calling for heads to roll before Tuesday’s game (some, but not too many). Most on here, myself included, thought we had the beating of Malmo prior to the game, and we did have, if the players had performed, but they didn’t.

Had the current players turned up on the night, or even perhaps had the referee made the right decision just before half time, we would have qualified. would everyone have called for change then? Did Barca fans say get shot of their team when we beat them?

I stayed in Kenya for a year or so and never trusted the Swahili language after someone told me ‘Jambo’ meant ‘hello and welcome’.

  16. It wasn’t only Celtic who did not keep Berget his club Cardiff freed him when he returned there, I thought he was a poor player and two games against us did not convince me otherwise, what got me the most the other night was the absence of fight without that you will fail no matter how good you are, Rosenberg got away with murder all night and was allowed by our players to do so, we are very soft again and we have been here before.

  17. Anyone know if we insertedd a sell on clause (surely) with Wanyama and what the figure is?
