Financial cost and prep for 2016

I reckoned Champions League participation was worth circa £22m to Celtic. By contrast, Europa League football will be worth less than a quarter of that. Ancillary income, such as retail and kiosk sales, will also suffer.

The challenge now is to improve the team without that income. This should not be impossible. Malmo managed it, and we’re not in a situation where the bank is hammering at the door. But what should be clear, is that the next five days represent the best chance to strengthen the team for next August’s qualifiers. There’s a notion that the biggest games of our season come early, but we’ve 11 months to plan for 2016’s biggest games.

Three things to remind you about:

Golfers: buy a raffle ticket for £1 to win a round of golf FOR FOUR PEOPLE at the magnificent Aberdour course in Fife. Competition ends on Saturday, get your tickets here!!! It’s offered by Taggsybhoy, in support of the Foundation.

Aberdour

There’s a Mary’s Meals collection from 1pm on the Celtic Way ahead of the game on Saturday. Ideally we’re looking for backpacks, but handtowels (the school kitchens you paid for have handwashing facilities and each child is given their own handtowel), pencils, rulers, etc.

If the kids got new kit for starting school last week, dig out the old stuff and bring it along.

Magners have kindly donated two Premium Seats in the Jock Stein Stand for Saturday’s games. You can win the tickets by answering this question:

Who is Celtic’s top scorer this season?

Player’s surname in the SUBJECT line of your email to celticquicknews@gmail.com . Competition closes at 22:00 TONIGHT, so not a lot of time to enter.

No call today for a donation, go stick a £1 in Taggsy’s raffle instead. Thanks.

  1. NegAnon, Does he wear his underpants outside his trousers, He may well be involved in the negotiations once a target has been identifiedbut I cannot and will not believe that he is out there identifying the players we need. He is actually a very good CEO and Celtic are a very well run Limited Company. The problem is that most fans don’t give a rat’s arse about things like that, they are only interested in the football. I can totally relate to and understand that, People on here need to be consistent, apparently Malmo’s wage Bill is 8 million and we are 33 million, yet people are blaming the Club for lack of investment. It was not lack of investment caused our defeat to Malmo and if we had thrown another 5 or 6 million into the squad ahead of the Malmo game that would not have guaranteed success either.

Our team played badly and let us down and our Management team share the blame its got feck all to do with Peter Lawell.

  2. CORKCELT on 27TH AUGUST 2015 7:06 PM

Billy Bhoy, What evidence have you that Peter Lawell was responsible for signing the list of players you mention.

Well, Craig Gordon was signed in the summer….while Lenny was “away scouting for players for Celtic at the World Cup. He arrived at the same time as Ronny. So, let’s see….hmmmmmm

I think incidents like that have confirmed the suspicions of many of us.

Lenny himself said “To be fair Desmond, you sold all my best players and replaced them with shite!”.

So, whoever is buying in the players it doesn’t appear to be either of the last two managers!

  3. BSR

Someone’s obviously trolling and we must have been hooked. There is no way that anyone who supports the ethos of our club would ever come out with a comment like that. A moderator needs to look at that and remove that posters eligibility to EVER post on this blog again…obscene.

The Raith game gives us,as supporters, the opportunity to stage some sort of tribute to Turnbull Hutton. One of the few to call it as it was. A trait that those in the corridors of power are not renowned for.

Furthermore. Someone on here earlier doing the maths. Apparently we “lost” £13m as a result of our defeat to Malmo but….could net somewhere in the region of £9m from the Europa. That’s nearly four times what we get for winning the SPL. A figure not to be sniffed at.

From earlier, re giving Pedro kudos for making good signings.

At least you recognise that it is Pedro making the signings :-)

Ok, this is what I believe and know.

Vic Wanyamma, scouted by John Park, kudos to Pedro

Ki, discovered by Pedro himself I understand, a contact from Asia tipped him off, mucho kudos to Pedro.

Now this is where I start to struggle where Pedro and his lacky John Park are earning their corn as a scout and a Director of Football.

Fraser Forster was down to Alan Thompson

Gary Hooper was down to Gary Parker.

Joe Ledley and Adam Mathews were down to Lenny.

    Kelvin Wilson, down to Lenny.

I could go on but you get the gist.

Even on the night that Mo Bangura was signed, Lenny was in Portugal watching Baba Diwarra, fully expecting to sign him, I wonder how that worked out then.

Go back to Tony Mowbery, Edson Brafheid turned up at Lennoxtown one day, he didn’t have a scooby who he was.

I am happy to give Pedro kudos when due, but it’s few and far when it comes to football matters, and if I am not mistaken, we are a football club, we want to watch games of football, and not a balance sheet.

  9. Just to be clear the 33m wage bill is for all 500 odd employees of Celtic. Not just the footballers.

  10. Can’t quite fathom if this blog is morphing into Communion Quick News or The Celtic View…

Either way , I think the sycophantic board propaganda peddled as blog headers, or people boring the arse off others about which Mass they attend is becoming tedious…..

Celtic fans demographic is open to all creeds and colours , and shows historical antipathy to most of the boards who have served us (and themselves) in the past.

For those interested in the Europa League seedings…

Celtic – as things stand – have a 37.5% chance of drawing a French team in Pot 3

    (Monaco, Bordeaux, St.Etienne)

  20. HUNDERBIRDS ARE GONE on 27TH AUGUST 2015 6:27 PM

I wonder what CQN would have been like over the last few days if we had progressed. I suspect there would have been very few sightings of the ‘sack the board’, ‘sack PL’, ‘sack Ronnie’, ‘spend more money’ style posts that have been in the ascendancey.

The hard truth is that for a second year in a row we did not qualify when faced with modest opposition.

This means that some at CP are not doing their jobs and calls for either a change of direction in their thinking or their sackings is justified.

  21. I stand in awe of posters who appear to know the workings of the inner sanctum of the Club. I hold my hand up and freely admit I do not know how or by whom these decisions are made. I am basing my views on my knowledge of how various business models operate and hopefully on logic and common sense.

Peter Lawell is an intelligent and successful man as is Dermot Desmond, these guys know when to act and when to delegate. I cannot believe that our CEO goes on solo runs identifying and buying players. It is not his field of expertise and clever men know their strengths and limitations.

Slight change of tack – I watched the Celtic U20s easily dispatch Hibs U20s 5-0 at the home of Spartans this afternoon.

A decent crowd there, with Broony on the touchline, Liam Henderson in the stand and Alan Stubbs and his management team there too, obviously looking for Celtic loans, as Hibs were pretty poor fare.

And of course, the indefatigable PaultheTim recently returned from Malmo. Obviously no signings this afternoon without the confirmation selfie with Paul.

Yes, I am the corner stats man, but don’t blame me for losing 3 goals to Malmo – I’ve already done that.
