Fixtures in 2003, 2008, and 19th C Glasgow

925

The mind is a remarkable thing.  If you ask around, you’ll find Celtic fans tell you we played Boavista in the Uefa Cup semi-final in Porto on the Thursday night, before going to Ibrox on the Saturday (it was the Sunday).

Similarly, Barry Ferguson is mumping his gums without restrain today, complaining about Rangers fixtures in May 2008.  Rangers were due to play a ridiculous number of games in May due to qualifying for the Scottish Cup and Uefa Cup finals, while catching up on postponed fixtures.

The SPL decided to accommodate them by extending the league programme until two days before the Scottish Cup final.  This final was on the last possible date before clubs were ordered to release players for that year’s Uefa European Championships, which started 14 days later.

This season has echoes of 2008 but nothing more.  Whereas clubs would have been forbidden from using certain players after the date of the Scottish Cup final in 2008, under current proposals for this year, the second bottom club from the Premiership and qualifier from the Championship will need to retain a number of players beyond their contract end date of 31 May.

Retaining players beyond 31 May will cost clubs money, and players could theoretically refuse to extend their season by a few days, which is this season’s problem.  2008’s problem was a hard deadline imposed by Uefa with no extensions possible.  The decision was out of the SPL’s hands.

Great article on the club site today marking Br. Walfrid’s passing and the struggles faced by our forefathers in the late 19th Century.  The news that the Foundation are feeding 500 of Glasgow’s homeless today continues the momentum from Wednesday night.  Well done to all involved.

This has been totally ignored by the SFA / SPFL / Media for 3 years now.

    They cheated as Rangers.

    Ogilvie knows they cheated

    Doncaster knows they cheated

    Reagan knows they cheated

    LNS knows they cheated

    SFA know they cheated

    The media know they cheated

    Peter Lawell knows they cheated

And they all know that we know they cheated

And for 3 years they have got away with it, and not a word about this from our club.

Last week’s fixture rigging was the final straw, just how blatant they will be to help Sevco.

Yet it took 2 women from the Edinburgh clubs to highlight this cheating.

Hearts & Hibs done more last week to combat the cheating than our club have done in the last 3 years.

    So, WC ……..

It’s up to us, the supporters to highlight these 3 chancers / cheats who are unbelievably still in a job.

We also need fans from other clubs to be involved.

Suggest fans take banners to games, like the Aberdeen fans did last season

Celtic’s 73% possession v Kilmarnock is 2nd highest total any team has managed in SPL history, only bettered by Celtic’s 75% v Hearts last year.

Rato had reportedly become the focus of money-laundering and fraud accusations regarding his personal wealth

Rodrigo Rato, a former managing director of the IMF and top-level minister in the governments of Prime Minister José María Aznar, was arrested in Madrid on Thursday after the police and customs officials carried out a search of his home.

Rato, who was already implicated in a judicial investigation into his stewardship of Bankia before the Spanish lender had to be bailed out to the tune of €22 billion (£16bn), had reportedly become the focus of money-laundering and fraud accusations regarding his personal wealth.

Earlier this week the former Popular Party (PP) minister did not deny reports that he had taken advantage of the Spanish government’s 2012 tax amnesty to declare previously concealed wealth.

At around 4pm on Thursday, members of the Customs Surveillance Service, which is part of the Spanish tax agency, entered Rato’s residence in the upscale Madrid neighbourhood of Salamanca.

Rato, who headed up the IMF between 2004 and 2007 and was once tipped as a future prime minister, has seen a drastic decline in his fortunes since overseeing the debacle at Bankia, the bank which revised its results in early 2012 to show an operating loss of €3.4 billion amid revelations that it was sitting on an estimated €40 billion in toxic real estate assets.

Rato was forced to resign as Bankia director and he has since become embroiled in a judicial probe into alleged fraud surrounding the ill-fated 2011 flotation of the bank and the use of secret credit cards by board members.

He cancelled his PP membership last year.

At around 8pm, Rato was escorted by several officers from his home into an unmarked police car.

  10. auldheid @ 09:33,

Yes, remember reading that at the time.

Now maybe you can remind me, why did the SPL rather than the SFA conduct the investigation into the EBT scandal.

Of course the players should have been registered with both organisations. Yet it is the SFA registration that is key and as the governing body and the correct registration of players is ultimately their responsibility.

Seem to remember they stated that as the SFA President was “heavily conflicted” so the SPL ran the “independent commission”, was that it?

“Integrity may have lost its way but that does not mean it cannot be restored.

If the ethical did not far outweigh the unethical you would not have the ethos we are part of. It’s our job to share it.

Ethics sometimes falls asleep, but reality always wakens it up.

You will know better than me but I get the impression there are some in the SFA trying to do the right thing. In the light of another screw up by Mr Doncaster and his team, could the SFA not order a (truth and reconciliation) review. Something proactive will have to be done to build trust.

Trust is essential if Ethics is to be established.

  12. Of course your analysis of the hun mj is of course correct. And of course it’s common sense that hun is not a sectarian term.

However. In Scotland what you have is state sponsored racism. Therefore any evidence of that racism is removed or the minority being attacked is criminalised. So words such as hun and even sevco get banned.

It is fascinating though that we have heard nothing on the JG super trial. I assume the authorities thought its job done because they managed to portray hun as sectarian and now they don’t want the bad publicity of the absurdity of that decsion. This is the new way. Say nothing.

My personal view is that there is no corruption within our club. I believe there is a reluctance to engage on the issues as some on here would like because there is a very real fear of the consequences for staff at the club if such actions were followed through.

Our statement did not receive universal support among the Celtic support especially prior to publication. The Newco supporters initially tried to laugh it off then as its effectiveness became apparent they turned their fury on Eddieinkikmichael.

On the Cqn magazine Facebook page when we mention them we always get “who cares” comments and things like “though this was Celtic quick news?”

One game at a time and all that but I’m beginning to think that the upcoming Workers holiday weekend will include league winning party celebrations for Celts, either at Paradise on the Friday or in a pub laugh-in on the Saturday. Don’t fancy Aberdeen to beat Utd twice and ICT away.

That’s for then, even though I can’t wait to enjoy it.
