Fixtures in 2003, 2008, and 19th C Glasgow

925

The mind is a remarkable thing.  If you ask around, you’ll find Celtic fans tell you we played Boavista in the Uefa Cup semi-final in Porto on the Thursday night, before going to Ibrox on the Saturday (it was the Sunday).

Similarly, Barry Ferguson is mumping his gums without restrain today, complaining about Rangers fixtures in May 2008.  Rangers were due to play a ridiculous number of games in May due to qualifying for the Scottish Cup and Uefa Cup finals, while catching up on postponed fixtures.

The SPL decided to accommodate them by extending the league programme until two days before the Scottish Cup final.  This final was on the last possible date before clubs were ordered to release players for that year’s Uefa European Championships, which started 14 days later.

This season has echoes of 2008 but nothing more.  Whereas clubs would have been forbidden from using certain players after the date of the Scottish Cup final in 2008, under current proposals for this year, the second bottom club from the Premiership and qualifier from the Championship will need to retain a number of players beyond their contract end date of 31 May.

Retaining players beyond 31 May will cost clubs money, and players could theoretically refuse to extend their season by a few days, which is this season’s problem.  2008’s problem was a hard deadline imposed by Uefa with no extensions possible.  The decision was out of the SPL’s hands.

Great article on the club site today marking Br. Walfrid’s passing and the struggles faced by our forefathers in the late 19th Century.  The news that the Foundation are feeding 500 of Glasgow’s homeless today continues the momentum from Wednesday night.  Well done to all involved.

But rangers are deed, …….I would assume we shouldn’t be calling the supporters of sevco huns…..unless we are calling them that because they migrated from supporting rangers to supporting sevco, which is fair enough

An ex Hun friend of mine (he is now disgusted by the club playing out of ibrox) told me once that when MJ scored for the Huns in an OF game the guy along from him shouted “The wee finian’s done it”. Your post and that comment illustrate the difference between a term and a sectarian term. IMHO.

Hope you’re having a good morning.

Well yes, when Rangers died what happened to the Huns?

    Technically they became Zombies.

But as many are still in Denial over the demise it is acceptable, if a little patronising to refer to them as Huns, even though they may be supporting new Clubs, The St Mirrens/Airdries of the World or taking up golf or fishing. Or even those continuing to pretend they are Football administrations.

  10. Chris Sutton in the Record….

Chris Sutton: Neil Doncaster needs to go before Scottish football ends up a complete laughing stock

CHRIS was baffled by the SPFL’s decision to move Hearts v Rangers to 24 hours after the rest of the final day Championship fixtures and while sense was finally seen – he believes Neil Doncaster has used all his lives and must go.

The decision to move the Hearts v Rangers game back to the Saturday was the correct one. It was just a pity about the total shambles they had to go through to get there.

I was left speechless at the original scheduling. Moving the game to 24 hours after the rest of the Championship card wasn’t just stupid, it was absolutely scandalous.

    There is a reason the
final games of the season all kick off at the same time on the same day.

Firstly, it is more exciting. But more importantly it ensures a level playing field. If one of the crucial fixtures takes place 24 hours after the rest have played it doesn’t just look like an advantage – it is an advantage.

There is a huge amount to be gained from knowing exactly what is required to achieve your goal, whether it’s winning the league, promotion or avoiding relegation.

It just defies belief no one at the SPFL realised this would be a problem. To come out and defend it as well was ludicrous. It is completely brainless from whatever angle you look at it.

We are now in the ridiculous situation where fans will look at the decision and start making their own assumptions.

Hibs supporters will think the authorities are just trying to give Rangers a leg up in their bid to get back to the top flight.

I don’t necessarily believe that myself. I don’t think the SPFL are capable of pulling off a plan like that and I suspect it’s more down to incompetence rather than corruption.

    But it does
not look good. Especially when the authorities have spent the last few years talking about the financial need to have Rangers back.

We keep hearing this phrase “sporting integrity” and you can’t have that
if sides
have been given an advantage. Thankfully they’ve come to their senses or at least listened to the outcry from all quarters.

I have been involved in my fair share of final-day dramas. At Blackburn Rovers we faced Liverpool on the last day of the season with a chance to win the Premiership while our rivals Manchester United were at West Ham.

We managed to win the league despite losing the game but the crucial thing was both games were going on at the same time. We didn’t know what was required until the end of the match.

It was the same with Celtic when we won at Kilmarnock and Rangers scored six against Dunfermline to lift the title.

Maybe the less said about that one the better, given the bother I got in after that game.

There was another one at Motherwell a few years later when we lost two late goals to lose the league. Those were huge disappointments but at least the matches were going on at the same time.

It was crucial because the situation was always changing and there may have been moments when you were on course to win but then a goal goes in elsewhere and the whole picture changes.

The drama is huge which is why I cannot fathom how the SPFL can have possibly imagined how this was not going to cause a scandal. I understand the demands of television but commonsense has applied also.

It would be better for the broadcasters to have the maximum drama possible so that’s why I can’t understand how the original game plans went through in the first place.

It just seems they can’t do right for doing wrong and have become a total laughing stock.

There is such a mess wherever you look. The Hibs situation is a shambles but there are also problems with the play-offs and cup final.

I know it’s difficult finding room on the fixture calendar – but it’s not that difficult. Every other league manages it fine.

If the season has to run in to June it could cause chaos. There will be plenty of players who are out of contract and that’s a complete minefield.

Players have to look after their own interests and it isn’t as straightforward as simply signing a deal for another couple of weeks.

What if they have signed pre-contracts elsewhere? Are they going to risk serious injury playing after their contracts have expired and possibly endanger their next move.

Moving the season puts the power in the players’ hands and if it was me I would be asking for more money right away or even another year.

I certainly wouldn’t be in a hurry to sign a short-term deal when I knew I was out the door a few weeks later.

It’s just another example of the SPFL making a complete hash of things. It seems to have been one thing after another in the last few years. Now there is this embarrassing U-turn.

I don’t see how those responsible can stay much longer. You look at the leadership of Neil Doncaster or whoever is helping him behind the scenes.

There’s no league sponsor, the fixtures are a joke and clubs don’t have a clue what’s happening one week to the next.

These people need to hold their hands up, admit they have made a mess of things and fall on their sword.

Scottish football has had enough problems to deal with in recent years, the last thing it needs is a governing body that doesn’t have a clue.

That gives an insight into what happened when the SPL Board met to consider the decision.

Celtic in effect were outvoted because legal advice ( based on insufficient documentation being provided) held sway over the majority of Board members.

Not all were in favour and at least one felt it left a bad taste in the mouth.

    League sponsorship.

Why would you want to associate your company that you’ve worked hard to build over many years with an entity that’s thoroughly discredited and mistrusted through its dubious associations of recent times with another entity that’s brought the industry into disreputable territory? and yet is doing its best in heralding a very similar entity headed by tax criminals, shamed directors and a business model that is wholly unsustainable and marked as a vital component to the industry.

Would you seriously want to sponsor this league with or without a club from ibrox?

    Seriously?

  19. Barry ferguson whining about a league season that WAS extended for one club in 2008 is sooooooo yesterday……

Easily refuted. Job done. Move on.

  20. Lennon n mcmjallby – if I were a sponsor I’d see better value in going straight to the well run club’s with my cash, exclude the league amd SFA – better value for money there. Perhaps clubs could suggest to sponsors that for a little bit more for clubs they’d get decent exposure for a lot less money than they’d have to pay a league structure

I just don’t get why you would want associated with the whole shebawz after everything that’s happened, there is very little integrity in the Scottish game now,the msm can say what they like but anybody with half a brain can see it’s all a sham,I also don’t see a massive financial difference to the game even if we did have to play at the debt dome twice a season.
