Fixtures in 2003, 2008, and 19th C Glasgow

925

The mind is a remarkable thing.  If you ask around, you’ll find Celtic fans tell you we played Boavista in the Uefa Cup semi-final in Porto on the Thursday night, before going to Ibrox on the Saturday (it was the Sunday).

Similarly, Barry Ferguson is mumping his gums without restrain today, complaining about Rangers fixtures in May 2008.  Rangers were due to play a ridiculous number of games in May due to qualifying for the Scottish Cup and Uefa Cup finals, while catching up on postponed fixtures.

The SPL decided to accommodate them by extending the league programme until two days before the Scottish Cup final.  This final was on the last possible date before clubs were ordered to release players for that year’s Uefa European Championships, which started 14 days later.

This season has echoes of 2008 but nothing more.  Whereas clubs would have been forbidden from using certain players after the date of the Scottish Cup final in 2008, under current proposals for this year, the second bottom club from the Premiership and qualifier from the Championship will need to retain a number of players beyond their contract end date of 31 May.

Retaining players beyond 31 May will cost clubs money, and players could theoretically refuse to extend their season by a few days, which is this season’s problem.  2008’s problem was a hard deadline imposed by Uefa with no extensions possible.  The decision was out of the SPL’s hands.

Great article on the club site today marking Br. Walfrid’s passing and the struggles faced by our forefathers in the late 19th Century.  The news that the Foundation are feeding 500 of Glasgow’s homeless today continues the momentum from Wednesday night.  Well done to all involved.

  1. Moravia,

Fergus would have went after Ogilvie and Murray. It’s a pity he didn’t hang around a bit longer.

Lawwell prefers the low key approach and picks up his £1M/ year with as little fuss as possible. He has stood by while Turnbull Hutton spoke up….not a peep from him. Never defended the innocent young Celtic fans who obtained criminal records due to OBB.

Lawwell will be delighted to have Sevco in the Premiership. It means in the CL qualifiers he can play Russian roulette for the 3rd season in a row knowing that there is a safety net for revenue and season tickets.

Lawwells excessive beancounter approach cost Celtic CL revenue of £20M last year. To fail this year would make it £50M plus £10M of dud strikers.

So a spineless CEO who could cost Celtic £60M and wanting Sevco back.

If Lawwell screws Ronny again this year and we fail to reach the CL he should be sacked. Ronnie already indicated compromise / tensions. Let’s see.

Ps . On Sevconian matters I hear some of the funding for the youth set up has been ” lost”

Mate you’re the original flat earther, you goon and on and on every fecking day about what the problem is but still to this day you think that not buying a season ticket is a solution..

You’re delusional if you were that worried you would have taken a wider reaching action like folk such as WC and Auldheid are doing, you would have got involved somewhere along the line..or perhaps moaning yer face aff on a blog is your upper limit of action??

Your attitude to anyone who questions you is always one of dismissal calling them all sorts of names and throwing around big hitter phrases like Institutional and Racism and you’re determined that it’s our club that’s at fault and that’s been your agenda since the 80’s.

The problem with you White Lighters is you do feck all except talk, talk is cheap Neg Anon where’s the action baby??

  3. Winnings thanks for the response.

I agree that the personal threats to individuals who put their head above the parapet is very real. Indeed I was talking to a senior audit partner who explained deep concerns around their engagement with the dead ones and told me stories about what happenned to senior executive at lloyds when they called in the loans at Ibrox. It also impacted some of their children. So I am not downplaying this.

But the truth is that the whole country is pandering to this threat of violence and allowing this to dictate the agenda. It has to be tackled head on and if our government could get control of the police force (incidentally evidence is emerging that the cops are once again routinely arming themselves) then this should be a focus area and not young supporters singing perfectly legal, songs.

    Everything else is simply appeasement.

Where I would disagree with the corruption within the club is that we know they were party to the 5 way agreement. We also know they have said nothing except to say they want them back. Now their motivation for all of this I believe is a genuine commercial concern that they have. That has proven somewhat groundless but clearly that view still exist within the boardroom at CP. But the inconvenient truth in this is that with this comes all the racism and cheating we know and have experienced. Ergo the celtic board want us back in the same place .

This simply means that football in Scotland is dead. It is no longer a sporting competition but instead a vehicle for the majority to practise their rwcism on the minority. That celtic are willing to accept that for commercial gain is disgusting and for us not to act out of fear is a damning indictment on us and on scotland generally.

I do accept that a large body of celtic fans simply want them back and to return to it. I beleive that’s out of ignorance and a wilful denial of inconvenient truths.

Keep up your good fight winnings and let me know if I can help. You and the guys are the only show in town dealing with this at the moment.

I was worried about that too. I sent out something to everyone who I had on the bookstore plus the Paypal payment.

That matches the sum collected. Not sure what happened to any of the others. If we can organise addresses etc I can send out. Same goes for those from the CQN corner.

  6. Who do we want to win in today’s semi final, Hibs or Falkirk?

I would prefer Falkirk just on the basis that I think we would get more tickets for the final when we hopefully get there.

  7. Starry Plough a nice rant.

What does white lighters mean? Haven’t heard that one before.

And who says I haven’t done anything? You don’t have any clue about what I do or have done. But the truth is I am at a loss with celtic. The only language they understand is money. So I will withdraw my money.

As for name calling well I get plenty here so I throw some back every now and again.

As for institutional racism do you deny that? Scotland is the bigger issue here and it’s clear that this won’t change anytime soon. Celtic are simply part of it and it is horrible that they want a return to all the same bigotry for the sake of money.

  8. Going for a treble and yet some still giving it to PL in the neck, ah well, I suppose they just don’t like the guy no matter what, or is it they just can’t wait for a Celtic Team on the park to have a loss and say “see, a telt yi, ”

Playground stuff, it must be eating them up Celtic doing so well,.

    Lurking Huns girfuys .

  9. Much as I’d prefer an all-green final, I strongly fancy Falkirk to win today.

Cracking weather at Hampden and the pitch looking superb. Let’s hope the sunshine continues into tomorrow.

  11. One more thing starry. Posting on this blog is doing something. We know who reads this blog and we also know how connected paul is. At least the club know not everyone buys their spin and approach. If it even creates any sense of pressure or doubt then it is worth it. Plus alerting others to what is going on is important.

But hey starry what are you doing? Or are you just happy to have the Huns back?

What the hell is this with the referees having mascots at the SC SF???????

  12. Yak yak yak.

Celtic are bad. Nasty people on the board scheming to deny the fans justice. We know fckall about running a PLC or the particular quirks associated with what custodians of a PLc are allowed/advised to record as a matter of public announcement which may or may not instigate market volatility/devalue shareholdings but we’ll fckn well whine about it anyway in the usual lazy-uniformed-not-going-to-research-it-or-accept-anything-but-out-own-contentions manner…Booooooooooooooo…

Usual Saturday morning Celtic love-in on CQN….

    Mon the Hoops.

  13. NegAnon2

White Lighters those who think that because they think they see the light that they can treat everyone else with contempt.

Your attitude is why I rarely take any of your issues seriously, I don’t live in Scotland so I can’t say how institutionally racist it is now but I’m sure if it was as bad as you say it is I would be seeing many more voices on here and in other places about it.

I think you’re being naive to think that Celtic’s only business plan is to be re-united with the team pretending to be Rangers, as I said yesterday the game died as soon as they got a licence to play in the fourth division.

How would it be if you tackled the issues that are important to you and spent less time trying to convert people to your cause and let other people tackle the issues that are important to them?

Interesting you call my post a rant, a high compliment indeed coming from The High Priest of Rants:)

Do I agree with the OB naw I don’t, do I think the Irish have a problem in Scotland yes I do, a wee bit of humility on your part would take your cause a lot further. The “I see the light” and you are all muppets if you don’t is not really my cup of tea.

  15. neganon….

Not living in Scotland I find it difficult to comment too much on the racism.

However as I live in a very (C)conservative part of England, I would say many of my friends and colleagues are racist. The thing is they are aware of it, they feel it’s justified. Racist not in an intolerant or brutish sort of way, more of a, you’re nice people and all that but we’d rather you went home kinda way.

I get the feeling in Scotland it’s very different, maybe because it’s been going on for so long and the history has woven it into the fabric of society but certain people seem totally unaware of their innate bigotry.

“It is fascinating though that we have heard nothing on the JG super trial. I assume the authorities thought its job done because they managed to portray hun as sectarian and now they don’t want the bad publicity of the absurdity of that decsion. This is the new way. Say nothing.

It was an absurd charge, For me Rangers as an institution were not just a Football Club, they thought of themselves as the epitome of Scottish football. They had their placemen at the head of the Football Authorities, Football committees, Disciplinary committees, match officials, media and throughout the Scottish establishment.

Even three years after Rangers went bust they still want to run the game. It’s why ridiculous things like the John Guidetti charge (of making fun of Rangers) and fixture malpractice in favour of one team continues. I believe these folk are genuinely shocked and nonplussed when their nonsense is highlighted. Their simply the best ethos is so entwined.

  18. Starry I have lived long enough to know that you can’t please or win over everyone. I have been at plenty of protests for plenty of cause (including agains the OB act) and been politically active, without being a member of any political party, all of my life. I have been a shop steward in the past and been at the forefront of many campaigns. These days working at senior levels in companies my role is to ensure people do the right thing and behave ethically. I have dealt with enough chancers in my time to recognise where there is corruption. I have written letters to my MP, MSP, to the press (I actually got a letter published in the Scotsman once when they tried to equate bigotry with irish republicanism ina story linked to the death of th queen mother and the minutes silence). I have written to celtic on plenty of occasions (all ignored of course) and to the BBC. I requested a FOI request from the scottish police force on numbers of Catholic employees). Could I do more? Absolutely. But I also have a life to live and a long suffering wife and kids who occasionally demand a bit of my time.

So I will still post here and I don’t care if it gets repetitive. This stuff is very important, much more so than a simple football game or a football club.

    Again what have you done?

As for my style here. Well it’s probably Bourne out of frustration but hey ho you can’t please everyone.

  19. Starry Plough –

Neganon has a definite anti-board agenda.

When Mrs Budge publicly condemned the Celtic support, Peter Lawwell issued a strongly worded response defending the support and criticising the Hearts statement.

CQN was almost unanimous in praising PL for his “strong response” with even the most regular board critics conceding that they were very pleased with Celtic’s reaction.

I say “almost unanimous” because Neganon eventually appeared and slaughtered PL and the board for their “weak statement”.

That was the moment I knew he was at it. That was the moment I stopped taking him seriously and I haven’t taken him seriously since.

He is a fantasist with a victim obsession. His repetitive diatribes are a joke and I now just laugh at each new homily. He is the Pastor Jack Glass of CQN.

  20. Chairbhoy there is and always will be casual racism and we don’t want to be the thought police.

Institutional racism is very different. And you are correct but Rangers were and their new version is much mor than just about football. Rangers a the vehicle for scotland to Lord it over the irish and catholics and to ensure we are kept in our place.
