Flag ban feels provocative

1033

It all seems a bit cloak and dagger to suggest that pyrotechnics are smuggled into football grounds inside flags and banners.  I’d always assumed the ‘stick it up your jumper’ technique would have been the delivery mechanism, not that I’ve any experience of the subject.

Flares have been an increasing menace at football games across the UK in recent years, including earlier this season at a Europa League qualifying game at McDiarmid Park, which passed off without mention in the media, but police have previously limited their interventions to lectures and the occasional arrest.

Football clubs are dependent on Police Scotland for safety licenses for games, and in their wisdom, the police have determined this action will remove one method of entering a stadium with pyrotechnics and discharging them without detection.  The ‘stick it up your jumper’ technique remains, as does ‘light it while pretending to tie your laces’.  Jumpers and tie-up shoes are the real enemy here.

This is an arbitrary over-reaction to the criticism Police Scotland came under for failing to properly police the vandalism at Fir Park, it will not prevent anyone intent on letting off flares inside a football ground from doing so.  Over-reacting after under-policing is a well-known phenomenon.  Going after flags and banners feels provocative. Coincidence?

You’re likely to find out if you’re in a provocative mood on Thursday; Police Scotland will know that provoking a crowd seldom quietens things down.  The reaction to Fir Park made me hopeful that we’d seen the last flare from the Celtic support, now who knows? We’re deep in muscle flexing territory here.

If true it tells us who is behind it.

Bugger. Letter to my MSP about OBB infringing human rights.

    Some advert for independence.

  2. SFTB:

…The game is too precious to be let go of lightly or without a fight. It is time to call out the enemies of football.

We the Celtic Support as have others who follow their Clubs have been treated like Cattle being led to the Slaughter House. The majority of Supporters only want to follow their team, spending their hard earned cash by having a few bevvies, singing songs, flying their flags and supporting their team. Some say that it is the working man’s game but sadly the business men including T.V. came along and ruined it.

On the 4th May 1994 Celts for Change and the Celtic Support won the day and saved our great Club from a Board that lost the vision on how to run our Club financially.

Our current Board are light years ahead of the old Board, if I can refer to them as that. There are things the new Board have done wrong. However, there are things they have done well. The most important one is they have insured we still have an unbroken history, unlike some other Club.

Getting back to your main point, supporters are treated appallingly and have been as far as I can remember. We face a new challenge and that is to weed out the idiots who bring pyrotechnics to games, they are some of the enemies of football, so long as they are allowed to continue it will only assist in the alienation and continued cattle being led to the slaughter house mentality from the authorities.

Before those of you who think I am a Board apologist, which I am not. We must continue through this Site, Twitter and other mediums take our concerns to the Board through legitimate means.

I know Eddie Toner personally and served on the CSA Executive Committee in the early 90s with him. We need people like him to continue to challenge our Board and authorities. We need people like Eddie Toner to help us police (small p) to weed out the idiots that go to our games, I do not regard them as supporters. The idiots that take pyrotechnics to our games are a bigger threat to our Club than our Board.

As Auldheid has said we should not assume just because there is silence from the Board that nothing is being done.

Neganon 2, I think you love throwing in the metaphoric grenade, to say supporting Celtic is propping up sectarianism Scotland is absolute tosh. Supporting Celtic is standing up for your principles and giving the two fingers to sectarianism. If we boycott Celtic our voices will not be heard.

We need to stand together fight the fight and not walk away when we don’t get what we want…there is only one team that does walking away and it ain’t us!

    Keep the Faith!

    Hail Hail!

  3. SFTB,

Being a tory dosent matter a jot on whether you are a Celtic supporter, i didnt explain that statement well, i couldnt care less on an individuals political persuasions.

But when we see the board not paying staff a living wage against all ethos of what the club represents then for me it is an issue, thats the political and economical policies of the PLC board.

Aye, something is going on all right.

This time I will back the board 100%.

No way would they have released that statement without the go ahead from the polis and St J.

Someone is trying to make us look bad here.

  8. ELTIC are claiming a flag ban for their Boxing Day clash at McDiarmid Park has been lifted but St Johnstone and local police are in the dark over the Parkhead club’s statement.

The Daily Record understands there has been NO U-turn over the decision – agreed last week after a meeting between both clubs and the police – to stop travelling Hoops legions taking banners into the ground.

A Saints statement yesterday revealed they had taken the hardline move of refusing to allow visiting fans to take flags into the Perth ground for the festive fixture.

The move came after Celtic fans caused thousands of pounds worth of damage to Fir Park with seats broken and flares set off which led to the flag ban with fears supporters could smuggle them into the ground inside banners.

Celtic today released a statement through their official club website which claimed the ban had been overturned but that is news to the local police and St Johnstone who are unaware of any change from last week’s agreement.

The Hoops statement read: “Following discussions today between Celtic, the local police and St Johnstone FC, it has been decided that flags and banners will now be permitted at the match on Boxing Day.

“We have an excellent relationship with everyone at St Johnstone FC and we thank them and the police for reviewing their initial decision.

“Football is about colour and atmosphere and creating a positive occasion for all and everything should be done to ensure that such an event can take place.

“However, it is also imperative that the safety and the well-being of fans is given paramount importance and in this regard we share the obvious desire of St Johnstone FC and the police that all matches take place in a safe environment.

“We do not need or welcome any form of pyrotechnics at matches and clearly any continued presence of these does nothing for Celtic Football Club or our supporters.

“Celtic has already had discussions with our main supporters’ representatives and we have been assured that our supporters will again back the Club in the right manner at McDiarmid Park.

“With the team currently unbeaten in the League we want our fans to come and enjoy the game safely in a positive atmosphere – and hopefully celebrate the Club continuing this great run over the festive season.”

    _____________________________________________________________________

This suggests to me that Celtic fans are being set up for a running street battle with the Gestapo.

  9. Having accepted Auldheid’s suggestion, I fired off an e-mail to my SNP MSP only to come back on here to discover that we are not sure if Police Scotland will allow banners or not. This clearly shows that the question his ‘Is the O.B.B. Act allowing police to infringe human rights?’ must be raised by as many of us as possible with members of the Scots Parliament.

Well it is possible that the same party who brought in a stupid piece of unneeded legislation could be in a position to bring in even more if unbridled by independence.

Simply put I do not trust the thinking currently at the helm of all shades.

Only our foot soldiers travelling support can make them think again even if the ban is lifted (IMO) Plod and their masters Christine Grahame & MacAskill will be out to get at us somehow.

The OBB was drawn up to balance the numbers with those of the walking dead and for no other reason no matter what happens on boxing day and if you are a celtic fan of any race colour or creed on your way to a football match in this bigoted wee country be on your guard. (IMHO) of course.

glad thats off my chest :))

  12. Looks like the board distancing themselves from this embargo- the polis wont let the game pass without obtaining results- no pyro = a polis victory and use of pyro is likely to be met by deployment of teams of riot polis who just happened to be passing- similar to the Gallowgate attack.- anyway the polis will also claim this as a reult and will be backed by the MSM no matter what happens

  15. Marrakesh Express on

Our club is slap bang in the middle of a smear campaign, unsurprisingly timed and designed to drag us into the Sevco abyss.

Peter Lawwell and his board (very possibly on the instructions of DD) are dancing to the Msm/police/Gov body tune.

By doing so they are failing to represent, in my opinion, the majority of the support. Rather than take these agenda driven anti-Celtic bodies head-on, PL and co seem to be kowtowing.

The Celtic support will not be fooled, and the last two home attendances must have sent out a big message.

The only constant at any football club is the support, the lifeblood.

An owner (Tan) or a PLC, takes this lifeblood for granted or underestimates them at their peril.

The Celtic support got their way in 93/94, and did so without a very powerful tool at their disposal, social media.

Dermot Desmond and Peter Lawwell should remember this before they dig the hole any deeper. They are only assisting those who hate CFC, and insulting me at the same time.

  16. Look this is not about Independence because we are not Independent. This is going on now and it will be in place unless it is scrapped.

If there is a no vote we still have the current Scottish government to 2016.

This goes beyond independence. It is the here and now and if you want my opinion this is hurting the debate massively.

The SNP are wrong over this issue and they need to be brought to task over it and things need to change. YES vote or NO vote.
