Flag ban feels provocative

1033

It all seems a bit cloak and dagger to suggest that pyrotechnics are smuggled into football grounds inside flags and banners.  I’d always assumed the ‘stick it up your jumper’ technique would have been the delivery mechanism, not that I’ve any experience of the subject.

Flares have been an increasing menace at football games across the UK in recent years, including earlier this season at a Europa League qualifying game at McDiarmid Park, which passed off without mention in the media, but police have previously limited their interventions to lectures and the occasional arrest.

Football clubs are dependent on Police Scotland for safety licenses for games, and in their wisdom, the police have determined this action will remove one method of entering a stadium with pyrotechnics and discharging them without detection.  The ‘stick it up your jumper’ technique remains, as does ‘light it while pretending to tie your laces’.  Jumpers and tie-up shoes are the real enemy here.

This is an arbitrary over-reaction to the criticism Police Scotland came under for failing to properly police the vandalism at Fir Park, it will not prevent anyone intent on letting off flares inside a football ground from doing so.  Over-reacting after under-policing is a well-known phenomenon.  Going after flags and banners feels provocative. Coincidence?

You’re likely to find out if you’re in a provocative mood on Thursday; Police Scotland will know that provoking a crowd seldom quietens things down.  The reaction to Fir Park made me hopeful that we’d seen the last flare from the Celtic support, now who knows? We’re deep in muscle flexing territory here.

What on earth is going on.? Did Local Polis agree and a Mason at the top overrule them. ?.

Somebody is telling porkies, could it be The Daily Rag. I am reasonably happy as long as our Club backs us the Celtic Support. The other Clubs can do what they bloody well like as long as they know if they start putting restrictions on us, then we won’t come. Not sure how Thursday is going to pan out now but in the longer term that is the clear message that should go out to the rest of Scotland.

Yup. Apologies although there is a wider read across that will remain post the independence vote.

I see parallels between how an unbridled SFA and banking system have governed Scottish football and how an unbridled Scotland would govern itself, especially when the mis- governance of the SFA has not been touched on by the current government in spite of the importance of football to the social fabric of Scotland.

Now if they were to speak up on the matter I might be persuaded that as a nation we are learning from our mistakes and change my mind.

At present however the evidence is all to the contrary. I mean Campbell Ogilvie is still President of the SFA in spite of his role in bringing our game to its knees and completely destroying trust in governance.

  11. Ernie Lynch and myself argued with a few yesterday that Celtic should have said nothing on the subject of the flags. If St J and the police wanted this, fair enough. All Celtic had to do was inform us.Thats it.Instead they allowed their name to be put to it,once again deserting their own fans,to appease whoever. The scum at the Record are now printing the ban was aimed totally at us,bringing up again,Motherwell. How does this do our image any good.We now have the farce of the ban being back on again, after we issue an official statement .

In our mad dash to appease our enemies we are doing nothing but giving them more ammo to fire.

    An absolute farce.

Agreed. There is a propaganda war going on internally and externally and Celtic are losing it.

  15. If the banned were to stand after Celtic’s statement then the game taking place is surely in doubt.

Meanwhile Sevconian media will whip it up, the ban cannot be enforced by the Police with the consent on St. Johnstone and Celtic.

    This is a Sevconian message

  16. This flag thing is back on again, strange one, and no matter what the outcome is, it dose not bode well for Celtic fans, Celtic have made an official statement and leave it there letting us all think flags and banners are a go for Thursday, cops being cops in this country are getting ready for a Barney, someone better get this right or there will be problems, my friends this does not look good at all, I won’t be there, but anyone who does go be very, very, careful, as I said this morning, this is a cull, keep your cameras on, lotsa angry Huns with uniforms on, you do not stand a chance.

  17. According to BBC Reporting Scotland, 2 versions of the flag issue are being aired.

Should we be surprised? The polis are hell bent on defending the unecceptable new

  19. *THE KING VIC 67* on

It always confuses me why we on CQN continually try to over complicate matters.

We drift in and out of politics- only yesterday a couple ended up debating Australian politics from a previous century and somehow relating it to Celtic……

Surely, someone, somewhere can raise an agenda to discuss the real serious ongoing matters involving our club?

I would be at the forefront of the queue if I thought I was remotely qualified enough – I AM NOT!

We should ask P67/winning captains to create a CQN poll on questions raised from the floor and have it presented to our board.

I’m thinking along similar lines as Celtic produced to season book holders when open meetings followed afterwards and our club grew stronger up until present?

    Any opinions?

  20. What was it…46 years ago we won the big cup? Aye 46 years of annoyance to the MSM in Scotland. It was never matched by deidco and indeed was the catalyst for their demise, and it will most definitely never be matched by the zombie tribute act. Those facts in themselves guarantee the dislike of Celtic FC remains very much real today and will be very much for real long after we have departed this earth.

Add the association with Roman Catholicism and the dislike becomes intense. Throw in the Celtic support being awarded a fans award, and building a reputation for being amongst the most faithful and best behaved supporters on the planet, and the intense dislike turns to sheer bitter sectarian bigoted hatred.

They have waited on their day in the sun on the football field, but it’s never stopped pissing down on them. They wanted separate schooling abolished, but have failed to see this materialise.

They have almost nothing left, so, when a few seats are damaged by an irresponsible minority of supporters, and a few smoke bombs are tossed to the trackside , a sight you’ll witness all over Europe, ( you won’t need to look as far afield to find other examples of broken seats), it is seized upon by an ante Celtic Scotland and magnified out of all proportion and given attention that outweighs the severity of the problem by the most ridiculous amount.

Make no mistake there will be a spotlight on the Celtic fans on Boxing Day both inside and outside the ground like never before. They are looking for more petrol for the fire. Banners will be scrutinised to the last letter looking for an issue. Flares and smoke bombs? Just a banger will make the headlines.

Box clever bhoys. Don’t give the ‘banners’ a banner and don’t give those’bangers’ a banger.

Don’t give them fuel for their fires. A boisterous, well behaved, carnival creating Celtic support will have them crying into their laptops on Thursday. KTF and keep the Heid.

  21. corkcelt- SUPPORTING THE DAM 5 on

I know its an extremely hard thing to do but if ban remains in place, our fans should head for the pubs. An empty terrace will send a louder message then anything. TV bosses will not be pleased, the atmosphere the Celtic following bring is a huge selling point to them. All other Clubs will think twice before replicating the St. Johnstone action. Be careful please, the fight goes on but box clever.

  22. Auldheid

I know what you mean but in the current climate they won’t. They cannot shake the tree at the moment.

Look at the number of people who have been threatened and how the mad mob from Govan have been reacting to anything that happens (in their mind) to them.

The length of time that that club in blue have received preferable treatment for me will continue with or without a YES vote but if we are to believe the No mob, Scotland will be so poor that the kind of banking required for a return to the 90s won’t be possible. The traditional methods will remain of course but like this stupid OBB it’s in the here and now.

We have more chance of binning that bill than changing the culture in the SFA and Scottish football journalism one way or another.

I agree it feeds into the psyche but just remember this is not a vote for the SNP and I’ll give you a prediction – if we get a YES, the SNP will disband and Salmond will retire. It happened in Slovakia when they split with the Czechs.

You can maybe tell I am conflicted over this but the bottom lines for me are I want this demonizing of our support to stop and I still want a YES vote.

I have been sickened this week badly by what I have seen.

I thought we had to take this decision the once and show exemplary behaviour to show everyone we cannot be broken but after this latest carry on I really do not know what to think.

I remain with one message – whatever the situation regarding the police, be smart and make sure you keep the head.

  23. For Thursday- dont go- if you have a ticket ask for a refund on the basis of St Johnstone changing the contract. Starve them financially- do this long enough and polis budgets will start getting questioned

  24. Where did the report regarding the meeting between Celtic, St Johnstone & Police Scotland, confirming that the flag ban had been lifted originate from?

  25. I predict a riot and not a made up one like last year (dundee)
