Flag ban feels provocative

1033

It all seems a bit cloak and dagger to suggest that pyrotechnics are smuggled into football grounds inside flags and banners.  I’d always assumed the ‘stick it up your jumper’ technique would have been the delivery mechanism, not that I’ve any experience of the subject.

Flares have been an increasing menace at football games across the UK in recent years, including earlier this season at a Europa League qualifying game at McDiarmid Park, which passed off without mention in the media, but police have previously limited their interventions to lectures and the occasional arrest.

Football clubs are dependent on Police Scotland for safety licenses for games, and in their wisdom, the police have determined this action will remove one method of entering a stadium with pyrotechnics and discharging them without detection.  The ‘stick it up your jumper’ technique remains, as does ‘light it while pretending to tie your laces’.  Jumpers and tie-up shoes are the real enemy here.

This is an arbitrary over-reaction to the criticism Police Scotland came under for failing to properly police the vandalism at Fir Park, it will not prevent anyone intent on letting off flares inside a football ground from doing so.  Over-reacting after under-policing is a well-known phenomenon.  Going after flags and banners feels provocative. Coincidence?

You’re likely to find out if you’re in a provocative mood on Thursday; Police Scotland will know that provoking a crowd seldom quietens things down.  The reaction to Fir Park made me hopeful that we’d seen the last flare from the Celtic support, now who knows? We’re deep in muscle flexing territory here.

On this question bud….I will defer to more knowledgable posters who specialise in these topics…but I will say this.

I will leave them to their honest mistakes, and by god, ive seen enough of them over the years….I wont be taking any part in their scoddish league, they can cheat amongst themselves.

  2. I’d like to start by echoing corkcelt’s hope that Eddie Toner and others will reconsider their position now that the smoke is beginning to clear about who did what with who and to whom in this senseless flag fiasco.

We have had a lot of half baked hypotheses floated and most do not stand the test of any evidence.

The Celtic support that goes to away games, and the fans of many clubs that attend away games, including sadly at Celtic Park, have a justifiable gripe as to how they are treated by police ans club stewards at matches and on the way to matches.

The perception of football fans as putative hooligans has been here for a while. It pre-dates the Green Brigade, it pre-dates the OB at Football Act, and it pre-dates pyro.

We were subject to searches by 3 banks of police and Stewards at Pittodrie 3 years ago (who, incidentally, failed to spot or ask about a radio and apple in one of my pockets). We were met with unjustified hostility and a threat of arrest by a motorcycle cop at Ibrox 4 years back who blocked off access to a street, temporarily. We have had supporter’s buses delayed and searched by surly policemen (and some charming ones to be fair, because courtesy enhances the relationship). On none of these occasions were my companions or I abusive, threatening or belonging to any likely demographic of potential trouble-making. Being football supporters was enough to have us boxed in to some unpopular stereotype.

The Daily Mail may not sell a lot up in Scotland but the Sunday Post and the Record Group can peddle their own bigotry and prejudice such that a political group can find succour and support in its attempts to crack down on an invented moral panic. There has been no increase in football violence, there has been no widespread vandalism or violence, and very little pyro, and what little of it there has been, has happened since all these measures took root.

We, as a society in Scotland, look down on football. In a land which, historically, has had an excess of interest and passion tied up in football, we have suddenly come across all metrosexual and condescending towards it.

We need to stand up for ourselves and our favoured activity. We contribute a lot to Scotland’s economy and profile. We do deserve better than we are getting.

My club has done many things wrong recently, but they are not the prime movers in all of this. It is time to rally round positive support for our club and our game. We must remain focused on the recent corruption and police our own game to improved standards. That will demand some retrospective justice being applied before we can go on. And it will require some response from our custodians too.

The game is too precious to be let go of lightly or without a fight. It is time to call out the enemies of football.

I totally agree bourne, I’d go as far as calling any clown who sets one off a Traitor. If this is worked correctly it could be the start of a major comeback. If Perth is a colourful atmospheric, peaceful festival it will recharge the batteries and will transfer back to Celtic Park.

  4. weeminger

Do you think documentary evidence exists categorically proving widespread corruption and ant-Celtic bias within the SFA?

Money may not change hands in SFA circles, but we have corruption just the same.

I’m happy for Celtic to deal with it by boxing clever, as they have done in the past with extension-gate, Neil Lennon’s ban etc. Celtic have shown themselves more than capable of choosing their battles.

To be fair, looking at the recent incumbents at the SFA, it hasn’t exactly been a fair fight.

  5. Right bhoys for us going to the game we need to be treble wide today we won a battle but police Scotland will be determined to win the war and after the boot in the haw maws today they’ll want body’s on Thursday.

  10. Green pints it’s gone way beyond trying to get an incompetent board out. Our current incumbents want to silence the core of the support. They are a disgrace. They agreed to this flag ban else it would not have happened. Their capitulation shows we still have some power.

I repeat my message. Supporting celtic at this time is propping up sectarianism in Scotland. Boycott celtic.

  11. SFTB,

Yup thats my experience of the football in the past 5 years, highlights being stopped 3 times between Stirling and Aberdeen 2 years ago all in search of drink in a 16 seat minibus, the surprise was they didnt find any!

The only thing i slightly disagree with is yes unify but how can we unify behind this current board?

I am not being flippant in that statement i just cant see how the current incumbents will be able to garner any trust from the normal rank and file.

Going by his Twitter page, without him actually saying it, it seems to me that Eddie Toner is back. Its a relief to me because I planned to Boycott the TV broadcast (I know, I know a pointless exercise) but being in Cork ’twas the only thing I could do. Now Friars Walk Tavern, here I come. Bampots don’t be fooled, others will now try to claim plaudits for the result but don’t listen. Ye won, God Bless ye all.

Last Friday was proposed by Celtic but did not suit guys out of the country.

Today was an alternative but that did not suit the Company Secretary with whom the matter is being pursued.

Another date is being sought but unless the Company Secretary is playing silly buggers the meeting will take place.

If it does not it will represent a massive breach of trust on Celtic’s part with regard to shareholders and PL is not that stupid.

Your understanding of the situation is incorrect particularly on secrecy. I have posted answers to questions regularly. The ONLY info that has not been set out is the letters from HMRC and e mails within Rangers that are the reason the Res was not voted against.

They have not been published because of how they may have been obtained.

They may in fact no longer be on line but that is were they first appeared and to anyone who read them they are not secret.

However happy to provide a document that comments on their content at the time to anyone.

It is the accuracy of those comments that needs to be established, hence the meeting when I’ll be attending.

The aim of Res12 was to establish if the SFA handled the full licensing process properly. We will know after the meeting if they did.

There are no genius’s at work in Police Scotland who dreamt up

They’ve capitulated, and the ‘focus’ is ironically back on pyro’s,

  21. Just a quick one before I go .

A few people on here say something along the lines of: The Board won`t be happy `till we are all sitting quietly in Celtic park and giving the team polite applause.

I believe that The Board and all of us at the games would be very, very happy to hear big crowds roaring out Hail! Hail! ;We Are Celtic Supporters! ;The Fields etc

The only Harry listed as an opponent of Dick Turpin was one Harry Ainsworth, who is credited with a pro boxing record of won 2, Lost 24 , and drawn 1.

Are you sure he transferred all of his aggression into boxing? He was sure knocked out a lot. Maybe the birching gave him a taste for S & M.

Incidentally, he was Disqualified twice during a bout so he may not have been birched clean of all his misdemeanours.

Do you think birching might cure racism out of a person?

  24. gebhoy

“how can we endeavour to change Scottish if our own club dosent support us or believe in what we are fighting against.”

We do not really know that is the case till we try. If they are true opponents of the necessary change, then they must be tackled too.

“Never mind the current political ethos of the board.”

Now, that is a separate question. Mush as I might prefer it not to be, being a Tory or a supporter of any mainstream party does not preclude you from being a Celtic supporter.

  25. KoJo

great tale of Harry & Benny, and can I say, much to learn from in my humble opinion. Yeah, there is no doubt that a good smack on the ercie whether physical or otherwise is a deterrent make no mistake. if would be villains were aware before they did the crime that they would be punished severely and I mean severely, they would think again. For example, let’s say that if a person were to double park and the punishment was let’s say 20 years hard labour, does anybody think they would consider double parking. of course they wouldn’t.
