Flag ban feels provocative

1033

It all seems a bit cloak and dagger to suggest that pyrotechnics are smuggled into football grounds inside flags and banners.  I’d always assumed the ‘stick it up your jumper’ technique would have been the delivery mechanism, not that I’ve any experience of the subject.

Flares have been an increasing menace at football games across the UK in recent years, including earlier this season at a Europa League qualifying game at McDiarmid Park, which passed off without mention in the media, but police have previously limited their interventions to lectures and the occasional arrest.

Football clubs are dependent on Police Scotland for safety licenses for games, and in their wisdom, the police have determined this action will remove one method of entering a stadium with pyrotechnics and discharging them without detection.  The ‘stick it up your jumper’ technique remains, as does ‘light it while pretending to tie your laces’.  Jumpers and tie-up shoes are the real enemy here.

This is an arbitrary over-reaction to the criticism Police Scotland came under for failing to properly police the vandalism at Fir Park, it will not prevent anyone intent on letting off flares inside a football ground from doing so.  Over-reacting after under-policing is a well-known phenomenon.  Going after flags and banners feels provocative. Coincidence?

You’re likely to find out if you’re in a provocative mood on Thursday; Police Scotland will know that provoking a crowd seldom quietens things down.  The reaction to Fir Park made me hopeful that we’d seen the last flare from the Celtic support, now who knows? We’re deep in muscle flexing territory here.

  1. Talksport saying flags and banners can now be taken.

Somebody at Police Scotland must have cleared the OG off the line.

Wonder if Celtic had anything to do with the reversal?

Wonder if I’ll get my bacon wrapped mini sausages before Christmas now.

  2. Weeminger this is far from a victory for celtic. The club clearly agreed to this bit then realised they screwed it up. Celtic are a joke. They are run by people who have no clue of what. It feels like to be a supporter. They and scottish society went to far and the article in the times has spooked them.

And you want me to thank them?

  5. Ernie Lynch – Evidence?

Several folks here on the blog, sadly these days it has seemingly become a majority, decided it was Celtic PLC that was responsible for the ban as soon as it was announced. In their pursuit of any and every excuse to try convince Celtic supporters such as myself that my club is heading towards disaster, they jumped on this and immediately blamed our CEO. Who needs evidence.

I don’t particularly like or dislike our board, I don’t know any of them, but they have guided my club to the pinnacle of domestic football, the sole priority for EVERY club in the world, and they get my respect for doing so.

  6. Weeminger stop missing the point. Money talks so we get a small victory but behind lies the unchecked prejudices

  7. Mncelt the ONLY reason this has changed is because we threatened them. We are strong as a support. Let’s threaten them again.

  8. Banned, not banned, unbanned – I’m flagging to keep up.

Is all this extra special police attention that Celtic are getting because we pay our taxes & hugely expensive policing bills? It seems that clubs that deliberately withheld & evaded taxes get very little service at all. I think they deserve(d) better.

  13. “White Christmas” is an Irving Berlin song reminiscing about an old-fashioned Christmas setting. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the version sung by Bing Crosby is the best-selling single of all time, with estimated sales in excess of 50 million copies worldwide. All other versions of the song, along with Bing Crosby’s, has estimated sales over 100 million copies.

Accounts vary as to when and where Berlin wrote the song. One story is that he wrote it in 1940, in warm La Quinta, California, while staying at the La Quinta Hotel, a frequent Hollywood retreat also favored by writer-producer Frank Capra, although the Arizona Biltmore also claims the song was written there. He often stayed up all night writing — he told his secretary, “Grab your pen and take down this song. I just wrote the best song I’ve ever written — heck, I just wrote the best song that anybody’s ever written!”

Before the flag u-turn, I would have put money on the boys in blue relishing the opportunity to lay into a few Celtic fans. Or to put it another way…………..

I’m betting bitter banner banners better batter banner bearers

Given that George II signed the original Act of Conscription in 1746, I think it is fair to say that the legislation was British, or Hanoverian in both its origin and implementation. (The Highland Forts etc). The abolition of course was partly influenced by the adoption, if you like, of elements of self-same dress, (and the Highlanders themselves) by newly created British regiments. Be glad to take the discussion next year.

  18. The Board are only interested in your money…but…..see what happens, when you threaten to withhold it en masse….now, that’s power the board can only dream of.

Its time we used our financial power wisely.

I don’t want to see corruption and honest mistakes, ive had enough of that to last a lifetime….its time things were brought to a head, silence solves nothing.

I wont be going to the back of any bus…not now, or ever again.

You can keep your corrupt league….enjoy, but I think I will give it a miss.

  22. Now what happens if pyro appears at the ground now that they’ve lifted the ban for that dubious reason?

  23. Neganon

You are entitled to your opinion but I think it is misinformed.

I set out reasons why Celtic can be seen to be inactive when in fact they are anything but as the latest news indicates.

I think that the steps I suggested would reduce the time between news breaking and clarification happening but even if it were one hundredth of a nanosecond I think you would still find tiime to make it anti Board because it is what you are.

You mistake silence for inaction. Sometimes that will be so, sometimes not, like today but it is a fragile default position.

  24. Snake

If any idiot sets off a pyro and is caught he should be named, shamed and banned.

Legislation does not stop idiots it just lets them suffer the consequences if caught.

I’m not missing the point, and I’ve already stated twice that St Johnston’s fear of losing money will have been a factor, but that would not be a reason for Celtic to get involved.

At the very least the Fans Liaison Office was caught out by this move. He’s responded with the fans concerns and the ban is gone.

Damned if they do, damned if they don’t.

  26. remind me – what was the last controversial banner at CP ? who was it aimed at ? was the banner “offensive” ? hmmm – but it might have helped the GB set off flares – that’ll do. Wonder how I’ll be voting ????

If the pyros are cut out, totally and for good, then this spurious correlation between flags and pyros will be seen for the nonsense it is and will hopefully die a death.

I’m not saying that would mean an end to the persecution of the Celtic support, though.

They’ll just dream up some other excuse.
