Flag ban feels provocative

1033

It all seems a bit cloak and dagger to suggest that pyrotechnics are smuggled into football grounds inside flags and banners.  I’d always assumed the ‘stick it up your jumper’ technique would have been the delivery mechanism, not that I’ve any experience of the subject.

Flares have been an increasing menace at football games across the UK in recent years, including earlier this season at a Europa League qualifying game at McDiarmid Park, which passed off without mention in the media, but police have previously limited their interventions to lectures and the occasional arrest.

Football clubs are dependent on Police Scotland for safety licenses for games, and in their wisdom, the police have determined this action will remove one method of entering a stadium with pyrotechnics and discharging them without detection.  The ‘stick it up your jumper’ technique remains, as does ‘light it while pretending to tie your laces’.  Jumpers and tie-up shoes are the real enemy here.

This is an arbitrary over-reaction to the criticism Police Scotland came under for failing to properly police the vandalism at Fir Park, it will not prevent anyone intent on letting off flares inside a football ground from doing so.  Over-reacting after under-policing is a well-known phenomenon.  Going after flags and banners feels provocative. Coincidence?

You’re likely to find out if you’re in a provocative mood on Thursday; Police Scotland will know that provoking a crowd seldom quietens things down.  The reaction to Fir Park made me hopeful that we’d seen the last flare from the Celtic support, now who knows? We’re deep in muscle flexing territory here.

  4. Let’s be clear here, not one person linked to a club that deliberately withheld and evaded taxes, and cheated creditors of £££Millions has been properly held to account. No appropriate sporting, business or legal sanction has been applied for wrong doing on an unprecedented scale in Scottish football. Yet all the furore surrounds Celtic? It’s worth remembering that the one bill that’s always paid is the one to the PR company.

Keep winning – they really don’t like that at all.

So how we got into this position of worshipping businessmen, is beyond me.

Really, its ridiculous the power they have in football, and that’s why its dying a death in Scoddland.

Like ive said many times, I want to see Glasgow Celtic, not this diluted ersatz version.

I want to see a Celtic manager, tell the board to take a hike.

  10. The power of the pound should not be underestimated, say ST J had 500 Celtic supoprters on today looking for a refund thats £12500 less they would receive at one of the leanest times for cash flow for clubs.

In my view that was the thing that made the difference.

There is the real power we have, withdraw financial support from Scottish football and the bigger influence we will have in change, its the only way!

    gebhoy

  11. Auldheid

    Absolutely.

My point is if the flags are now allowed again and it happens won’t this carry on happen all over again?

Let’s blooming hope not and lets hope common sense can continue to prevail and we can get the whole support back together again to take us forward.

It is uncertain how many people would have taken flags before this flared up, now I’d say a lot more fans will be doing it and if I were a merchandise seller I’d be packing a van for a wee windfall.

I just hope no one ruins it this time. Give them no more ammunition.

  13. Glad the flag ban has gone.

There are also some regulars on here who don’t support Celtic never mind the board. One buddy at least has been hypercritical today calling for a boycott of our club. Hmmm!

  14. CELTIC have bid sayonara to Hiroki Yamada – but only for the holidays.

The Japanese trialist – who celebrates his 25th birthday on Friday – could be invited back after the New Year.

Neil Lennon and his management team will take the next few days to consider whether or not it is worth pursuing their interest in the Jubilo Iwata captain.

Yamada spent last week at Lennoxtown trying to convince them he would be a useful addition to the squad.

But assistant boss, Johan Mjallby, admits the lack of any game time has meant it has been difficult to assess the attacking midfielder with the lethal shot.

He has now been sent home for the festive period, during which Celtic have a heavy fixture schedule which will reduce training to a minimum.

But Mjallby expects a decision on what happens next will be made during this time. He said: “I think Hiroki is going to go home for Christmas and New Year. Obviously we need to sit down and make a decision about him.

“He has done okay in training, but it is always hard when you don’t see them in proper games. In an ideal world, you would have a bounce game where you could see him in action when proper tackles are flying in. But he looks okay and he is going to be in our minds.”

If Celtic do decide to make Yamada the third Japanese Bhoy to join the club, after Shunsuke Nakamura and Koki Mizuno, they can expect a fight from Jubilo Iwata.

The team recently relegated from the J-League believe they have Yamada under contract for a further year and have indicated they would look for a transfer fee.

Mjallby is content to leave that side of things to others, but reckons the very fact Yamada was able to come to Scotland and train with the Hoops indicates he would be available for free.

The Swede said: “I don’t know the situation. But the season is now finished in Japan, so I would say that, if he is on trial, he is probably out of contract.”

Definitely on his way back to Lennoxtown is Mo Bangura, who will become eligible to play for the Hoops again when they meet Partick Thistle on New Year’s Day after completing his year-long loan to Elfsborg.

New signing, Icelandic striker Holmbert Fridjonsson, will also finally come into contention for his debut having joined on a pre-contract from Fram.

And it would appear Tony Watt could also be back at Lennoxtown five months ahead of schedule after Lierse coach, Stanley Menzo, indicated the striker’s poor attitude will mean his loan spell in Belgium is cut short.

How about supporters running the club….a novel idea I know, but anything is better than the people in charge now…im serious

Supporters would not bow down to every hun media complaint, and im sure they would not be quiet, about the corruption and honest mistakes either.

We’re (mostly) all supporters here. How often do we all agree on something? I’ve already commented today that the near universal condemnation of the flag ban was the first time in ages this board has been of one mind.

  18. Joe Filippis Haircut on

I have been to McDermott park to watch the hoops many times and I dont ever remember seeing a lot of flags or banners . I think this was a storm in a tea cup but what the reason behind it was I have no idea ? but well done to good old common sense. H.H.

  19. Commons sense prevails at last.

Somehow the Celtic board are still at fault. Give me a minute.

    (Pre-emptive grrrrr)

  20. The Green Man

Most of “our” money” is paid to players to put a team on the park that will attract enough spectators to provide enough money to pay to players to put a team on the park ad infinitum.

The Board and those who make Celtic work to put a team on the park to attract supporters etc etc are workers who we also pay to put a team on the park etcetc.

It is not they that benefit from “our” money but US, so whilst the Board might want “our” money lets get it right about why they do so and why we give.

Celtic can use supporter/ shareholder power to force change through and that sometimes means WAITING for the support/shareholders to make their voice heard.

It considerably strengthens Celtic case if they go to the SFA and say our support/shareholders think you are corrupt, that you and Rangers are dishonest and untrustworthy and they have told us to ask questions and what you tell us we are answerable to them, so it had better be the truth.

Res 12 aims to make that very point and I hope the way it is handled demonstrates to everyone how the support/shareholders and Club working as ONE can bring about the honest game we crave.

Divided we cannot get accountability and through it an honest game but united we can change the football culture in this country.

    Some constructive criticism..

For the first time I feel that your intro suffers from lazy journalism.

The McDiarmid debacle has got nothing to do with flags or pyros.

Secondly, looks like Celtic “did’ something today to unban the ban.

I thought you were “in the know”?.

Call me a sycophant but I agree with you regarding crime and punishment. The punishment should suit the crime and be a deterrent, yeah. I f you are a naughty bhoy you are going to be punished severely. BUT, as parents do we not have some responsibility ‘cos if we don’t punish our kids and let them think they can get away with murder in the home, when they go outside in the big bad world they think the same, funny that.

Im sure most people on this blog, have no wish to upset or annoy other Celtic fans, I certainly don’t.

But I think whats going on now, and how we have been demonised by the scoddish media, and sadly our own board…..Its time for a rethink.

DD and PL, are far too big for their boots, they underestimate the power of the Celtic fans…and that’s a foolish mistake.

Ive had enough corruption and honest mistakes, and downright cheating…..football needs cleansed in this country, and I can think of no better people to clean it, than Celtic fans.HH

Yes thats normally the case, however, let me change that statement as it applies to another “team”.

  26. Now that the flag is no longer an issue, any news on the resolution 12? Have the ones who dropped the ball had any more meetings in merchant city? I doubt if there will be a meeting with PL this week or next week, in fact I think it may be a while before he sees them, IF he sees them at all, me thinks there big mistake was going into the big bhoys playground tooled up with shorts on, and coming back out with skipping ropes and yoyo’s, I did warn you all, but no one listened, and still they call me a blowhard,an idiot, and crazy, that may well be, but how do you go into a meeting with thousands of proxy votes on the premise that you have told people you will get answers, then come out saying you got an answer, but you can’t tell the people who gave you the vehicle for resolution 12, I did WARN you and you all ripped me apart, I was against resolution 12 because as far as I was concerned, it was in good hands and was being looked after, I knew that, I told you that, and then auld heed posts, I don’t know what is going on, he is right of course, regarding the ones who dropped the ball, I have not got a clue what they are doing, or what’s going on with them, as a matter of fact, no one knows what they are doing it’s a secret, auld heed , as I said I haven’t a clue about them, BUT! I do know what is going on, keep underestimating me, please.
