Football’s hard, Armstrong, McNeill v Greig

661

Last week I suggested we were better with yesterday’s game over and done with, but I have to admit to thoroughly enjoying the occasion.  It may not have been the derby of Old, but it had traces of familiarity from my youth, when managers Billy McNeill and John Greig faced each other.

I watched the game back on television last night.  What an absolute pair of trumpets Warburton and Weir are!  Weir was sent to the stand for demanding Mikael Lustig receive a second yellow card, despite not receiving his first.  Warburton then explained this to the media, indignant that Lustig wasn’t dismissed for two yellows, still totally oblivious to the fact he hadn’t been booked.

Football’s hard.  Referees make mistakes.  But keeping track of who has been booked is remarkably simple.  It was Nir Bitton, not Mikael, who was booked early in the game.  Nir and Mikael have a similar, slight, build, but there’s 7cm between them, with different skin and hair pantones.

What does this tell us?  That the Newco management didn’t know their opponents well enough to tell them apart, never mind how they would play.  Remarkable, considering how often we’ve been on television this season.

Two weeks ago a Dundee United fan asked me what we’d done to Stuart Armstrong and Gary Mackay-Steven.  Armstrong, he explained, was never going to make it as a wide player, he was effective for United through the middle.

I think we suffered for the loss of Tom Rogic, as Stuart edged himself into the occasion, but it may be Ronny Deila deployed him incorrectly.

Moments to cherish from the game: Moussa Dembele’s first touch to control Lustig’s cross at the fourth, and his reverse pass for Scott Sinclair at the third.  You’ve not seen control and awareness like that from a Celtic striker in over a decade.

We’ll touch on the longer-term issues of yesterday at a later date, after we’ve got Barcelona out of our system.

The one thing we all wanted from yesterday was to come through the game without further injuries.  Both Scott Brown and Tom Rogic, two of our central midfield three, retired early.  I’m not going to tell you we’ll take anything from Barcelona on Tuesday, but having Brown, Rogic and Bitton in the team will allow us to at least face the game in decent condition.

What I meant was some haven’t had people so low in their lives that they haven’t experienced some people feeling so low they think that’s the only way out ……..

    No hidden meaning mate

  2. I think the GB missed out on a “pay the face painter” banner ….and everyone painted up as Celtic Tigers !!!

  3. Oh they are hurting. Take this from one of their bloggers….

Barton was anonymous today and shouldn’t start the next game. He’s been poor all season and he needs dropped, whatever his name, wage bill, or pre-match shooting skills are. Niko Kranjcar may have some value, but it probably isn’t STARTING HIM AT F****** PARKHEAD. Clint Hill should be boiled down for glue, and Philippe Senderos, good god. Thankfully most of these are on one-year deals, but what an outrageous waste of money this could be. This is the real worry. What a huge setback, and a disastrous outcome from a manager who was supposed to value youth, and does, and has made a success of himself at Ibrox so far by doing so.

8 points from 5 games. Keep that up and they will hit 55 points no problem. Nothing to worry about.

Hope you enjoyed yesterday, my wee great niece was at her first game of that type, scary stuff when it was me that took her dad, back in the EBT years at the age of 14 he was greeting saying “uncle Gerard do we ever beat them” my retort back then was, wee mhan we are the good guys we don’t have to win all the time…….

  9. Gerryfaethebrig.

Excellent stuff, keeping on being a happy clapper I mean.

It’s the devastation that’s left behind.

Whoever said a couple of guys in the pub probably thought it was funny at the time and carried through with it, I agree with, we are quick to turn on our own at times on this blog.

I’m with H.T. we should be talking about Celtic, this story already has level 5s paws, all over it. Deflect away from how awful their team and supporters are. All of a sudden two bow up dolls is the story.

  10. MWD

What exactly did you find ‘hunnish’ about it?

I’ve said it was distasteful but I think you’re giving meaning that isn’t there.

I hated/loved yesterday in equal measures. A 5-1 win against anyone is to be celebrated. To do it in front of nearly 8,000 bigots was a joy. :-)

  12. There’s a lot of hot air an’ posturin’………….

    …but enough about me.

  14. What is the Stars on

2 months ago if someone said we would start a game without Griffiths and Roberts I would have been worried

Yesterday we didnt even notice they werent playing

Feck the opposition ..it shows how much we have progressed in 2 months

    M. Has lived off his fiver on Burley 2.0 against oldco for many years, this will take it to a new level. :-))))

The story is Brendan is a manager and the Celtic board should be applauded for getting us a manager who (I think)!is even better than St Martin………

    And am no wordsmith but

Tell all the Huns you know

They now follow a team called Sevco

  18. Hanging effigies at Veltic Park is Hunnish and what I expect from Huns. Smacks of the Huns hang them high crap and the Huns annual effigy burning. Hunnish? Most definately.

It is unnaceptable. I leave you to find an excuse for the Hunnish behaviour. I for one believe we are better than stopping to their level.

Naw it was Pat :-) though M would have preferred it more!!

Just my opinion but I find CQN very, very unusual in how quick some are to condemn our own without evidence.

  21. Just been trying to find out what everyone is talking about ie the banner hanging over the upper stand, so I had to search for the photograph, when I found it I couldn’t believe that someone would be stupid enough to do that.

Another stupidity to put the boot into Celtic, I hope they nabbed the idiot who did that idiotic thing, I don’t buy any papers, but saw the Picture and it broke my heart to see that photograph, disgraceful way to act, in fact how did they get it past the stewards.

  22. JNP

I had a tenner on Burley and 2-0 at 110/1, Burley scored in 77mins and Paul Lambert scored in 86mins, £1100 is a lot of cash for a wee working class bhoy far Coatbrig, obviously it was New Year, my line before it was cashed I was handed about Scruffy Murphys in Coatbrig…..I obviously bought a few beers for the punters but for weeks later the bouncers referred to me as “Burley” am anything but Burley, after that clowns rants if I had the money I would give it back

  24. See a few of you are dancing to their fabricated keech.

They’ve fabricated this and their friends have promoted it.

FFS you were at the game “no Pope of Rome” the lot belted out yesterday. Wanton mindless destruction again, I presume The polis weren’t standing back this time watching?

Stop dancing to their tune and enjoy their humiliation.

  25. As far as I am aware 3 men have been taken into custody regarding the “Dolls”No names as yet,but an eye witness said,”One was an old guy with a Duffel Coat,a bunnet, and large white beard.Another was wearing a sheepskin, and the other looked a right plonker”.
