Form vagaries of Malmo for Celtic

793

Celtic will play Malmo in the Champions League play-off round, the third time since 2012 they will face champions from Sweden. The main concern for Ronny Deila is the manner in which Malmo disposed of Salzburg 3-0 on Wednesday night, but there is context to put that into. In the previous round the Swedes only managed a 0-0 at home to Lithuanians Zalgiris Vilnius, before winning 0-1 away.

Those three goals against Salzburg, which arrived inside 45 minutes, will be the subject of a lot of research over the next few days.

In 2013 Celtic struggled to blow away the cobwebs against Elfsborg, recording a 1-0 home win and a 0-0 draw away. A year earlier they beat Helsingborgs 2-0 home and away.

The most encouraging aspect for Ronny will be Malmo’s domestic form. They are current 6th in the Allsvenskan after 18 games and will struggle to qualify for Europe next season. A home game against league leaders Gothenburg on Sunday will be Celtic’s most important reconnaissance exercise.

Oh, and put out the flags, Malmo play on grass!!

  2. Did we bid for Bobby Zamora?

“BOBBY ZAMORA is back at Brighton after turning down Champions League football and the chance of a league title in favour of a return to the club where he made his name.

The former Tottenham, West Ham, Fulham and – briefly – England striker was freed by QPR at the end of last season. On Monday he signed a one-year contract with the Seagulls, for whom he scored 83 goals between 2000 and 2003 and won back-to-back League Two and League One titles under Micky Adams and Peter Taylor.

“I had an offer from a Champions League team and a team that win their league pretty much every year, but this was the only place I really wanted to be,” he said.

Last month Brighton fans voted Zamora the club’s best-ever centre-forward, but, now 34, he reminds them that times have changed since he terrorised defences at Withdean Stadium. ” (Express)

Just off the phone to my young cousin Nicola from Houston Renfrewshire. She is the black and white sheep of the Delaney family,a Saint Mirren fan like her pal from school Stephen Thompson. He is distraught tonight. He is never a hun.

  10. WITS: in retrospect, I think you are right. It is a real pity (but no surprise) that the Northern state developed into a bastion of loyalist bigotry while in the South, Northern Nationalists were ignored and mainstream politicians developed a political system which feathered its own nest.

  11. the glorious balance sheet on

The question was asked in here tonight – would we sell out a home game v St Mirren?

Well I don`t know the answer to that (and of course we have 10,000 more tickets to sell than the Orcs do) but I`ll tell you this:- one thing we definitely wouldn`t do is sit on our hands, keep or hands in our pockets and see no evil and do feck all while our club slides into oblivion and liquidation, leaving a trail of debt and misery – over £100 million worth – in its wake.

When we were on our knees, the midweek after the Raith Rovers Coca-Cola Cup defeat, the Celtic share issue went live. Our club was in a bad place, 6 years without a trophy, but the fans put their faith and money in the club, many of them going into debt to do so, and the share issue was massively oversubscribed.

It was a share issue only made possible because of the hard work put in by the likes of Celts for Change to make the case for change in the way our club was run.

Contrast this with the Huns. What you get there is a misplaced sense of entitlement, they want trophies and glory but they want others – sugar daddies and the taxpayer – to pay for it. Minty went to them with share issues on numerous occasions, they kept their hands in their pockets and he had to pay for it all by chucking the huge Rangers debt into the humongous Murray Group debt that was eventually written off by the banks and picked up by the taxpayer.

So if 50,000 huns turn up tonight, so what? Where were they when it mattered? When the annual accounts were coming out posting multi-million pound debts each year were they questioning how the club was run, agitating for change, or putting their own money in? No, they were sitting with their hands in their pocket while singing about being up to their knees in fenian blood.

Doesn`t matter how many of them turn up for 2nd tier games the bottom line is this – when it really mattered, they didn`t turn up. They were incapable or raising the balls or the money to save their club. Tugging the forelock and wallowing in outdated sectarian bile is all they do.

We put in hundreds of thousands of pounds of our own money to pay for the debt our club had ran up and finance our rebuilt stadium. They didn`t pay a thin dime of their debt and are ok with sitting in an asbestos ridden midden as long as they can sing about famines and stuff.

But they did make some “Show Liquidation the Red Card” banners and organised a stupid wee march to an empty Hampden Park. And they get a full house for a game v St Mirren. Big wow-wee.

  12. For a blog that is full of posters who say they think Rangers died there is a fair bit of interest in the Zombie nation who appeared from their ashes.

Didn’t even know they were playing until I came on here. In fact the championship and it’s clubs don’t even cause a passing interest, Morton apart.

It’s no wonder they think they are the same club when you consider the time given to their games by Tims as if they were the same entity.

    Forget about them. Their DEID.

To feather ones nest is a trait we all possess. Old retired revolutionaries are no different. Same thing happens today. I met an old friend of mine in the city centre the other day. He has been through the mill for the wearing of the green, including over a decade in one of her Majesty’s institutions, his health suffered greatly. But what saddened me most about the encounter was his sense of total disillusionment with today’s situation,
