Form vagaries of Malmo for Celtic

793

Celtic will play Malmo in the Champions League play-off round, the third time since 2012 they will face champions from Sweden. The main concern for Ronny Deila is the manner in which Malmo disposed of Salzburg 3-0 on Wednesday night, but there is context to put that into. In the previous round the Swedes only managed a 0-0 at home to Lithuanians Zalgiris Vilnius, before winning 0-1 away.

Those three goals against Salzburg, which arrived inside 45 minutes, will be the subject of a lot of research over the next few days.

In 2013 Celtic struggled to blow away the cobwebs against Elfsborg, recording a 1-0 home win and a 0-0 draw away. A year earlier they beat Helsingborgs 2-0 home and away.

The most encouraging aspect for Ronny will be Malmo’s domestic form. They are current 6th in the Allsvenskan after 18 games and will struggle to qualify for Europe next season. A home game against league leaders Gothenburg on Sunday will be Celtic’s most important reconnaissance exercise.

Oh, and put out the flags, Malmo play on grass!!

    Nothing to do with bigotry.

    As I’ve said before on here if the Pope had played for the now died club he’d have been a Hun in my view.

  2. WITS: I have met similar people and tbh it is understandable. To give up a large part of your life for something you believe in and not to achieve all that you set out to can be demoralising. However, I am an eternal optimist, and I believe that if it was worth fighting/ campaigning for before, it still is.

    For me and many other other Celtic fans, the term Hun refers to a particular type of RFC fan. They are bigots, this is what seperates them from bluenoses for example.

    What is a Hun to you and how do they differ from other RFC fans?

    I’m amazed that there seems to be some different interpretations of what what the term Hun means.

    I can understand that analogy.

    There were always 3 pillars of the Irish in Scotland, at least the ones I knew, and they were the Catholic Church, the labour party and celtic and not necessarily in that order

    any other version or use of Hun validates the current ongoing ascertion that the use of it is bigoted and/or sectarian.

    My buddy is a Hun and he knows it.

  14. Tomorrow, Malmö, 6th in the Swedish league with 31 points, hosts Goteborg who lead the league with 38 points.

    Malmö may suffer from their efforts on Wednesday against Salsburg, or was it Salsburgh, Scotland’s wettest village according to the BBC.

    I assume Ronny and one of the two John’s will already be in Malmö.

    What better chance to size them up when playing the league leaders?

    that’s a cop out. What is a hun to you and how do they differ from other RFC fans was the question. If you can’t answer no problem mate.

    No it doesn’t, it’s using it to discribe all fans of a particular club that validates the argument that the term is sectarian. The term is directed at a particular type of fan of that club who are bigoted and sectarian

  19. WITS: I don’t know who you are talking about and I am sure the person you are referring to is not the only one. I know many people who were involved in various political parties in the ’80s who still are. Just as in 1922 there were many people who were pro/anti treaty. It is hardly surprising that there are plenty of people who are not happy with the current peace process in the North or the political establishment in the South. As it happens, whether or not Sinn Féin are the best party to progress politics in Ireland, they are the largest party on the island. In the next election I would like to see a clear Left/Right choice but unfortunately there is too much division on each side so we will probably end up with a wish washy coalition instead.

    On the earlier question of who is a hun and who is not;

    Willie Henderson was never a hun;

    Jim Baxter was never a hun;

    Mark Warburton is not a hun

    Alex McDonald was a hun;

    Neil McCann is a hun;

    David Weir is a hun.
