From David Marshall to Tony Watt

1317

Just days after The Beating of Barca in 2004 the youthful Celtic chief executive, Peter Lawwell presented teenage sensation, David Marshall, with a new contract, reward for his incredible goalkeeping performances against the Catalans.  Having made only a single first team appearance, in a cup game against (then) lower league opponents, David played the second half of the first leg against Ronaldinho & Co, then all of the second leg, without conceding a goal.

It Camp Nou performance was the most remarkable I’ve seen from a keeper.  After years looking for a solid performer to make the position his own, it looked like we had a new star.

A year later David had, if anything, regressed.  He remained first choice until after the start of season 2005-06 but Artur Boruc, for a while the genuine article, soon replaced him.  David was shipped out to Norwich before eventually settling at Cardiff City, where he has built a solid career, but his star never shone as brightly as we expected it to.  His Scottish contemporaries, Allan McGregor and Craig Gordon, both overtook him.

It is incredibly hard for a youth player to break into a team like Celtic in a position like goalkeeper, or striker, the pressure to deliver – every time – is so high, we are a whole lot more likely to introduce wingers.  The parallels between David Marshall and Tony Watt are remarkable, so far.

From the outside it’s hard to guess what went wrong for David at Celtic.  He lost his place at Celtic when he was just 20 and the trajectory of his career was never the same but 20 is still remarkably young for a keeper working at Champions League level.  Tony Watt is two years younger than David and he is in the considerably better position of being able to come on as substitute for sections of games, or to drop away for a few weeks, if necessary.

We should expect more fantastic splurges of form from the player but there will be frustrations and dips in form too.  He has the skill, speed and strength to make it.  With hard work and patience he stands an excellent chance.

I suspect the Green brigade discussed the bhoycott with the vast number of them who have been harrssaed at CP, or their homes in the middle of the night , or who have lost time and money at work because of unwarranted and illegal jailings.

Hit the club hard and now!

Make them state their support for their supporters…….or for the police……and WHY!

It is not difficult for the club to make a statement now in view of current events.

    Or is it?

  2. philboy – agree to disagree with you but if we ever meet I will gladly shake your hand for we are Celtic Supporters together.

  3. Just catching up again after seeing the GB statement on Twitter.

Are the GB actually asking the rest of the support to participate in the boycott or have many either jumped to that conclusion or already taken that decision for themselves?

  4. I understand thew GB are rightly pissed off, but a boycott doesn’t help them.

As sftb said, a wee bit of consultation might have been worth considering.

The polis/government will have won the battle, the club have already been paid.

Big nan -what on earth do you mean by that?

    ……………………………………………………………….

If you don’t know I can’t enlighten you I am afraid.

  7. It has been decided by Salmond , the Police,Media & the Scottish parliament that the Green Brigade are a sinister and dangerous organisation which threaten the fabric of Scottish society and to be treated as potential criminals and arrested accordingly using the any excuse will do law

Meanwhile back in the real world football supporters across Europe and the globe marvelled at the Green Brigades absolutely stunning tiffo display against Barcelona and there continual backing and support of Celtic which creates one of the best atmosphere’s witnessed in any football stadium Anywere! having fun in the Champions league anyone

Celtic fans especially the Board of Directors must support the Green Brigade and there stance against this victimisation & criminalisation which is totally unjustifiable and reprehensible

  8. I’m sure the GB did think long and hard about it, but didn’t they also say that PL wanted them out of Celtic last season. They seem to be going about this in the least effective way to get their message across.

  9. Philbhoy - It's just the beginning! on

Good night and God bless all good folk, Oscar, Marco and Vinny M!

May the sun shine on you all tomorrow.

  10. Philbhoy

Obviously the group being harassed are going to want the strongest response and, understandably so.

However a unilateral response by the GB, following internal discussion only, is not going to impress the rest of the support that their views count equally on the way forward.

The people who are expressing reservations are not wholly made up of quislings and people unsympathetic to the GB objectives but there is more than a whiff here of GB deciding the action (2 match boycott- why???) and then calling for support, when a more effective way to impact Celtic Board and police attitudes would be to gauge the strength of feeling within the wider support and tailor the action accordingly.

A mass response at CP is more impressive than an empty Section 111

  16. Perhaps the Green Brigade should wait till 75% of their members have been arrested?

Then a strongly worded letter to the Independent?

  17. UTLR

I sit in 105. My attention is constantly drawn to the attention that the police give your section. in fact, it was commented on that at the end of the Barca game that it was clearly visible on TV that there was a cordon around you.

This led to sevcovians gleefully assuming that you were being penned in due to misbehaviour. It probably looked like that throughout Europe on the highlights package too.

Thank God then that SKY and the Barca Directors made it crystal clear that they felt priveleged (as we all were) to be there that night. And it was ALL down to Section 111

    Thank You!

Like PFayr I will not be attending these two games either. I hope EVERYONE gets behind the GB. Enough is enough!

I bhoycotted the midweek game in the 90’s to help remove the old board and will gladly do likewise to help prevent the continued demonisation of Celtic fans simply wanting to enjoy supporting their team. What is the world coming to??

Ikea ‘deeply regrets’ using prison labour

Ikea has published a report expressing its regret for using prison labour after claims that political prisoners were forced to work in its factories during the 60s and 70s.

The forced prison labour allegedly took place in communist East Germany and while the Swedish retailer denies allegations that this was ever condoned, it admitted that it failed to vet its supply chain effectively.

The issue was first raised by a human rights group in the 1980s, but when it recently came to light again, Ikea commissioned Ernst & Young to investigate in more detail.

As a result, it was revealed that Ikea managers ‘were aware of the possibility’ that political prisoners might be put to work in East Germany factories to produce Ikea products.

Ikea manager Jeanette Skjelmose said in the report: ‘We deeply regret that this could happen.

‘The use of political prisoners for manufacturing was at no point accepted by Ikea.’

‘At the time we didn’t have the well-developed control system that we have today and we clearly did too little to prevent such production methods,’ she concluded.

According to Rainer Wagner, chairman of the victims’ group UOKG, the Swedish retailer is just one a number of firms to have benefited from forced prison labour in the former GDR.

Am I a Hun? Big nan

    ……………………………..

    Perish the thought.

You see the GB action as handing bad publicity about Celtic to the MSM on a plate.

I see the GB action as (coming after many months of dialogue and attempts to resolve their deplorable treatment at the hands of Strathclyde Police) showing the world just how prevalent anti-Irish and anti-RC bigotry is in Scotland.

Stating the facts to the wider world would show Strathclyde Police in a bad light and Celtic’s GB support in a good light as reasonable fans with no violent or racist agenda.

A complete bhoycott of those two games leaves the board in no doubt that we are serious in our concerns about the dreadful treatment of Celtic supporters by the police.

If we do little or nothing now, where will the police harrassment and bullying end?

The Green brigade today……the rest of us tomorrow?

I take my wee girl to games at CP.

    Normally the LL stand.

However, I am becoming more uncumfourtable with police tactics at the stadium.

I must consider the wee ones safety and well being if I get lifted for no reason.

    I will not now go.

It is not worth the risk.

    I now despise the police.

And I’m sad about that too.

  23. I boycotted games at CP during the

Sack the Board era to save Celtic.

Is this issue now on the same scale ?

    Some perspective is now required.

  24. Posted last week about lack of protection for GB after harassment of a young bhoy yet again.I thought PL might have done a trade off with the GB to make a donation to the magnificent display v Barcelona, against Remembrance Sunday protests. This is a major worry to all IMO.

  25. What in God’s Name have the GB done to get this much attention from the Police ?

I seem to recall that there was an off duty Policeman who did a condiderable amount of damage to our toilets at one of last season’s Celtic v 1872 games.

Has he been found Not Proven yet ?

wow!!!! so a simple 2 game ban is an overreaction…..how reactionary of them…I would have thought that it was a well considered and very reasonable reaction to events…but hey what do i know.. a letter to the Times will sort it

  27. ” But.. Think they are Making a Big mistake..”

I wouldnt say it’s a big mistake Sammy.

The boycott in the league game is futile at best. The only people who will give a toss are those of us who enjoy the atmosphere and possibly the team.

The boycott of the cup game sends out more of a message to at least one of the 2 parties the gb are pist with.
