From David Marshall to Tony Watt

1317

Just days after The Beating of Barca in 2004 the youthful Celtic chief executive, Peter Lawwell presented teenage sensation, David Marshall, with a new contract, reward for his incredible goalkeeping performances against the Catalans.  Having made only a single first team appearance, in a cup game against (then) lower league opponents, David played the second half of the first leg against Ronaldinho & Co, then all of the second leg, without conceding a goal.

It Camp Nou performance was the most remarkable I’ve seen from a keeper.  After years looking for a solid performer to make the position his own, it looked like we had a new star.

A year later David had, if anything, regressed.  He remained first choice until after the start of season 2005-06 but Artur Boruc, for a while the genuine article, soon replaced him.  David was shipped out to Norwich before eventually settling at Cardiff City, where he has built a solid career, but his star never shone as brightly as we expected it to.  His Scottish contemporaries, Allan McGregor and Craig Gordon, both overtook him.

It is incredibly hard for a youth player to break into a team like Celtic in a position like goalkeeper, or striker, the pressure to deliver – every time – is so high, we are a whole lot more likely to introduce wingers.  The parallels between David Marshall and Tony Watt are remarkable, so far.

From the outside it’s hard to guess what went wrong for David at Celtic.  He lost his place at Celtic when he was just 20 and the trajectory of his career was never the same but 20 is still remarkably young for a keeper working at Champions League level.  Tony Watt is two years younger than David and he is in the considerably better position of being able to come on as substitute for sections of games, or to drop away for a few weeks, if necessary.

We should expect more fantastic splurges of form from the player but there will be frustrations and dips in form too.  He has the skill, speed and strength to make it.  With hard work and patience he stands an excellent chance.

I sometimes shout “Come on Celtic!” :)

Seriously though, there are too many happy to let the GB do all the singing.

  2. It’s a very sad day when the GB decide bhoycott 2 Celtic home games, especially when you consider the debates that have been raging about bhoycotting away games. You have to suspect that the information about supporters addresses in section 111 is actually coming from within Celtic Park and that is the reason for this action, there can be no other reason!

  3. Regarding the Green Brigade.

This group are the passion at Celtic Park, if I can I will help them.

They are part of the experience at CP, they sing songs to make Celtic proud.

Time for Celtic to step up and protect the fhans.

None of those arrested recently have been convicted, not guilty verdicts keep coming, they support a football team, that’s not a crime. Well, unless they play in green and white Hoops, in Scotland.

  4. I will support the GB, if this does not stop I will not renew my ST-

Two weeks ago, we put out the above statement about the continued harassment of the Green Brigade. The response and support we received was excellent from the rest of the Celtic support, and obviously this is something we are very grateful for.

The reason for this statement was because we felt it was time that the extent of this harassment was made public. We also hoped that Strathclyde Police would see sense and end the criminalisation of our group. Sadly, if anything, they have increased the pressure since this was released. A newspaper report last year claimed that one of their senior officers had promised to ‘smash the Green Brigade’ and it certainly looks like their plan is in motion.

Last Wednesday was a special night at Celtic Park. The display before the match was beyond our wildest expectations, the atmosphere was electric from start to finish and more importantly, Celtic beat arguably the best team in world football. It is a night that will live long in the memory of everyone connected to the club.

However, while the rest of the support were still on Cloud 9, our group was brought back down to Earth with a bump as it transpired that Strathclyde Police had visited yet another two members’ home with a view to charging them. To put this into perspective, this means that just under 50% of the Green Brigade have either faced, or are facing a police charge/ban from football.

Last week, the first home league match since we released the initial statement, a young fan from within 111 was arrested and taken away for the ‘crime’ of having a water bottle inside a football stadium. When questioned about their actions, one of the senior officers within the stadium, Alex Kelly, smugly replied that “if you don’t play ball, we won’t play ball.” In other words, this young fan was being used as a pawn in their game.

On top of that, news broke that they had also visited a fan in Liverpool having (wrongly) assumed that he was involved in the Green Brigade. Why they visited him remains unclear just now but it is something which we’re looking into, and obviously concerned about.

We’ve also heard worrying developments involving a member of the Govan Emerald CSC, which will be revealed over the weekend in a statement from their own members. It wouldn’t be right for us to comment on this any further until they have released this publically.

It has come to the stage where we have to act and fight back. We can’t continue to let the Police have free reign to arrest and charge whoever they please. It is having an astronomical effect on people’s livelihoods. Those members who are left without a charge can’t even enjoy the football anymore in case it leads to a chap at the door that could change their lives forever. The grim reality is that if we don’t act now, there may not be a group left come the end of the season.

As a result, we have no choice but to highlight this further in the form of a two-match boycott from Celtic Park. This will begin immediately and means that during the forthcoming league match V Inverness Caledonian Thistle and Scottish Cup match V Arbroath, the Green Brigade will not be present whatsoever. This is clearly not a decision that has been taken lightly. Our members live for going to watch and support the team we love, just like every other fan out there. Sadly, we aren’t being treated like every other fan and in fact face victimisation and harassment on a scale that is unimaginable. We hope that this boycott will raise awareness of our situation and the end result will be that Strathclyde Police will relent. We’d also once again ask Celtic PLC to defend the fans by using their considerable influence to bring an end to these oppresive police tactics.

We would ask that everyone in Section 111 joins us in this protest and that the area is left empty during both matches. We have been very lucky in that other season-book holders within our section have supported us all the way and we hope that this will continue. Fans in this section who want to join us in protest may have to cancel their payment for the Arbroath match if they are on the home cup ticket scheme.

We’d like to stress again that this is not something that will be taken lightly. Many of our members haven’t missed a Celtic match in years so it’s clearly not been easy to come to this decision. However, it is simply a last resort as this cannot be allowed to continue. The continued support of those in 111, and indeed the rest of the Celtic community is greatly appreciated and we can’t thank you enough. Without this, the group wouldn’t have survived.

We’d also like to make it clear to those who wish to see the end of the Green Brigade, that we will be sticking by the motto created when we were formed in 2006 and will not go down without a fight.

That “was Jesus not the first communist” phrase I remembered from passed years. The communists said that when discussed things with the believers. That meant: he was like we are, but we are even better, come on, join our company.

If you could scroll the pages of the last article and tell me how many times two terms “fascists” and “Nazis” there were used to describe the Israelis? Probably tens of times.

I watched the news in the Polish TV today and saw Hamas leaders speaking to the journalists. One of them told that they will not stop fighting until they destroy Israel and kill all Israelis.

Are they doing this for the Palestinian children? The Israelis were the fascists yesterday but I can’t find how you call these Hamas leaders today.

Not keeping one of the sides but would like both country leaders to sit down and work out the terms of peace.

“I also said that Christianity is not the philosophy. There are Christian philosophers but Christianity is not the philosophy.”

Sorry you’ll need to explain that one in a bit more detail, it just doesnt make sense. What are these Christian philosophers discussing what would be the point mentioning the Christian philosophers if it was not Christian philosophy they were discussing, surely if they are not discussing Christian philosophy they would just be philosophers, no.

    No, it does make sense.

Christian philosophers is rather conventional term. Two or more Christian philosophers discussing Christianity are philosophers (as simple as that). Two or more Christian philosophers discussing definition of time are philosophers.

I should start from two terms: supernatural belief and inborn belief. For the clearance of this explanation I prefer not to explain these two terms.

    Catechism states:

“The desire for God is written in the human heart, because man is created by God and for God; and God never ceases to draw man to himself. Only in God will he find the truth and happiness he never stops searching for. … In many ways, throughout history down to the present day, men have given expression to their quest for God in their religious beliefs and behavior: in their prayers, sacrifices, rituals, meditations, and so forth. These forms of religious expression, despite the ambiguities they often bring with them, are so universal that one may well call man a religious being” (27-28).

    In another places Catechism states:

The act of faith is man’s response to God who reveals himself (see Catechism, 142).

“By faith, man completely submits his intellect and his will to God. With his whole being

man gives his assent to God the revealer” (Catechism, 143). Sacred Scripture calls this

assent “obedience of faith” (See Rom 1:5, 16:26). The virtue of faith is a supernatural

virtue which enables man, by enlightening his intellect and moving his will, to assent

firmly to all that God has revealed, not because of the intrinsic evidence but because of

the authority of God who is revealing. “Faith is first of all a personal adherence of man to

God. At the same time, and inseparably, it is a free assent to the whole truth that God has

    revealed” (Catechism, 150).

Sumary: Christianity is belief in the Trinity : the Father , the Son (Jesus Christ) and the Holy Spirit. This belief do not exclude science.

Philosophy is a scienceof all things through the highest causes, obtained by natural reason. This science do not exclude belief.

Christian philosophers (conventional term) is used for the philosophers who believe that God created this world, they believe in the Holy Trinity. Therefore: St.Augustine and Karol Wojtylla were Christian philosophers. Take a note, Christian philosophers term was first used in nineteenth century, many years after St. Augustine was born but the Saint is called Christian philosopher.

St.Augustine and Karl Marx were both the philosophers but first was Christian philosopher, the second one was probably first and the best sevconian philosopher.

If you could not ask me to go into discussion on the philosophy again I would be happy.

Please support them, it’s time our custodians listened, this is far more important than shirt sponsors.

  22. Much as it pains me to not go to the games I will support the GB and stay away for those 2 games.

Celtic Football Club is the support.

We must stand up for our own

  23. FYI

There will be huge protest at all stadiums in Russia and Ukraine this weekend. The supporters will come in black clothes.

  24. philbhoy

I will be with them, the only criticism I can level at them is they make me feel old.

I envy their energy. I sit close by them, they do nothing in the stadium to draw attention of the police, they are the life and soul of the party, so to speak.

If the stewards are being picky they jump around at points, someone might get injured that’s it, but it is unlikely, they are friends having fun. No malice involved. They laugh and enjoy it.

From where I sit there is no drunkenness, or any hit of violence.

Just supporters having a good time at the game.

  25. You’d think the police have actual crimes to investigate rather than pestering a group of football fans for being too “feniany”.

  26. I would like to think the GB could find another way to protest. The board might not be too bothered this year as they have the season book ££’s, but it could be a marker for next year.

  27. In 1978 a friend was lifted out of the Jungle for nothing

  28. celtictom

If, a young supporter was arrested for having a bottle of water, and taken away, then that is a disgrace. Not that the possession was not illegal, it is under Scottish criminal law, but that there is such an offence in the first place. Coincidentally, for those of us that were there, this particular legislation, Thatchers, Criminal Justice (Scotland) Act 1981, (check your tickets) was the direct result of Rangers fans rioting (and Celtic supporters reacting) after the Scottish Cup final of 1980. As such it is an offence to take a plastic bottle of water, juice, etc into any football ground in Scotland. But not in England. You can have a boiling hot cup of coffee though. Anybody prepared to sing through a whole match should be able to drink from a bottle of water. For that to be criminal, and to use it to criminalise a young supporter, is an abuse of power.

  29. Green Brigade bhoycotting Celtic Park next two matches in protest against Police brutality.

I for one will be joining them.
