From David Marshall to Tony Watt

1317

Just days after The Beating of Barca in 2004 the youthful Celtic chief executive, Peter Lawwell presented teenage sensation, David Marshall, with a new contract, reward for his incredible goalkeeping performances against the Catalans.  Having made only a single first team appearance, in a cup game against (then) lower league opponents, David played the second half of the first leg against Ronaldinho & Co, then all of the second leg, without conceding a goal.

It Camp Nou performance was the most remarkable I’ve seen from a keeper.  After years looking for a solid performer to make the position his own, it looked like we had a new star.

A year later David had, if anything, regressed.  He remained first choice until after the start of season 2005-06 but Artur Boruc, for a while the genuine article, soon replaced him.  David was shipped out to Norwich before eventually settling at Cardiff City, where he has built a solid career, but his star never shone as brightly as we expected it to.  His Scottish contemporaries, Allan McGregor and Craig Gordon, both overtook him.

It is incredibly hard for a youth player to break into a team like Celtic in a position like goalkeeper, or striker, the pressure to deliver – every time – is so high, we are a whole lot more likely to introduce wingers.  The parallels between David Marshall and Tony Watt are remarkable, so far.

From the outside it’s hard to guess what went wrong for David at Celtic.  He lost his place at Celtic when he was just 20 and the trajectory of his career was never the same but 20 is still remarkably young for a keeper working at Champions League level.  Tony Watt is two years younger than David and he is in the considerably better position of being able to come on as substitute for sections of games, or to drop away for a few weeks, if necessary.

We should expect more fantastic splurges of form from the player but there will be frustrations and dips in form too.  He has the skill, speed and strength to make it.  With hard work and patience he stands an excellent chance.

Why did Peter Lawell have to mention the “R” word at all when talking about league reconstruction?

Anybody representing Celtic in public should be instructed not to mention the “R” word and if asked give a standard “they are in the 3rd division of the SFL and therefore of no relevance to us” type of answer.

Listen to Charles Green, look at their lamentable IPO presentation. They try to associate themselves with us at every opportunity. They are clinging to our coattails. We are their only hope.

    Kill them off now.

To Peter, Neil, the player and everyone associated with Celtic – STOP talking about them and STOP the joint shirt sponsorship.

  6. MacDonald was the cart horse to Dalglish the thorough bread , a player who appeals to your average Orc.

A microcosm of the Orc philosophy in comparison to ours.

The mythologise Greig, Woodburn, Forsyth, Stevens, Miller, Johnston et al……. We on the other hand have wee jinky, KOK,Lubo, Lennox Dalglish & co.

  7. I was round my Dad’s and picked up the paper, think it was the Sun, they were serialising a book in the sports bit. I didn’t even know who the book was about as the Sun didn’t really report it well but they did highlight one story about his run in with Johnston at Ibrox where he basically admits he’s a bigot and they felt this was suitable for a book and a newspaper.

“Like all Rangers people i didnt think he should have been at the club, and shouted back ‘You shouldnt even be at Ibrox you…..’

    And stopped my sentence there”

The story then continued with Souness complaining to Murray who complained to Mercer who pulled up McDonald for it. McDonalds defence was that he only called people in green the F word.

I saw that tweeted as it was said and my immediate reaction was “oh dear”

He was not at Celtic when the decision that gave rise to the resolution was made and his response did not address the specific issue but was a generalisation that had an element of truth in that sponsors can throw wobblies, but ultimately the final decision has to lie witth Cetic – as I believe it does.

In short I think that had he known the full background and been part of the decision making process at the time he would have answered differently.

  9. Well I guess we all have an opinion, I did not know we were not allowed to appreciate good players, assholes or not, Jardine was the second best full back in the country at a time when Scotland had a few, p1shed!, I guess we will never be able to agree on this, apparently I need to be drunk to see a good player, it’s football for god sake

  12. I thought that I would travel back in time to my formative years and have a snakebite or four. Only now instead of using p*shy Scottish lager and Strongbow I’m using German Pils and a French Cidre, very continental and very relaxing, I think I’ll call it Schlange-morsure.

I’m also tempted to make one with Belgian Leffe Blonde and French Cidre which I will call Zombiekiller.

I need to get out more.

  15. Winning Captains- just placed my order for the Annual, cant wait. When or how do I pay.

The Big Vic video posted earlier was fantastic. Makes you realise not only a fantastic player, but also a scorer of great goals. A priviledge and pleasure to see him in the hoops and wherever he ends up he will leave and remain forever a bhoy.

Embdy know a pub in Nerja where I can catch the game 2morro?

    ————————————————–

I left NERJA three years ago after running the slaintebar for six years unfortunately we were the only bar that showed Celtic games in preference to other matches however if you go down towards the hotel Monica there is a bar called Irish Annie’s who may show it

If not there are a few English. Bars who will probably put it on as ours is an early kick off and won’t cut across any EPL games

There are a few good tims to be found in NERJA ….. Enjoy

  18. Re Alex MacDonald

When I was a wee Bhoy, one of his relatives lived five or six houses down from us.

I think it was his aunt, but , it could have been his sister :-)

He used to drive up regularly in an orange Allegro .

It was a long time ago, but I remember him being an obnoxious p****k , and when he was in the street word pretty quickly got round and there were at least 7 / 8 weans shouting abuse at him.

The most amusing bit on reflection was that our street was 50:50 , and even the Rankers supporters realised what a trumpet the guy was, and enjoyed winding him up more than the Tic fans.
