From David Marshall to Tony Watt

1317

Just days after The Beating of Barca in 2004 the youthful Celtic chief executive, Peter Lawwell presented teenage sensation, David Marshall, with a new contract, reward for his incredible goalkeeping performances against the Catalans.  Having made only a single first team appearance, in a cup game against (then) lower league opponents, David played the second half of the first leg against Ronaldinho & Co, then all of the second leg, without conceding a goal.

It Camp Nou performance was the most remarkable I’ve seen from a keeper.  After years looking for a solid performer to make the position his own, it looked like we had a new star.

A year later David had, if anything, regressed.  He remained first choice until after the start of season 2005-06 but Artur Boruc, for a while the genuine article, soon replaced him.  David was shipped out to Norwich before eventually settling at Cardiff City, where he has built a solid career, but his star never shone as brightly as we expected it to.  His Scottish contemporaries, Allan McGregor and Craig Gordon, both overtook him.

It is incredibly hard for a youth player to break into a team like Celtic in a position like goalkeeper, or striker, the pressure to deliver – every time – is so high, we are a whole lot more likely to introduce wingers.  The parallels between David Marshall and Tony Watt are remarkable, so far.

From the outside it’s hard to guess what went wrong for David at Celtic.  He lost his place at Celtic when he was just 20 and the trajectory of his career was never the same but 20 is still remarkably young for a keeper working at Champions League level.  Tony Watt is two years younger than David and he is in the considerably better position of being able to come on as substitute for sections of games, or to drop away for a few weeks, if necessary.

We should expect more fantastic splurges of form from the player but there will be frustrations and dips in form too.  He has the skill, speed and strength to make it.  With hard work and patience he stands an excellent chance.

I agree but Mrs 7 doesn’t!! guys in the work were doing it about 5 years ago (mates wife had just died and we were trying to raise some money for the hospice) however I was bricking it and didn’t want to bottle it on the day maybe letting people down…so Mrs7 stepped in

never seen a bigger smile on her face than that day… mine too that she had done it and I didn’t need to :-)

I know!! cowards are we CSC

  2. Detested MacDonald myself. He epitomised thon deid team’s attitude: he, like Greig, Jardine and their like, hated us. I revelled in the Love Street league win. It was all the sweeter to think him and Jardine were in charge of Hearts. They, imo, are responsible for much of what is wrong in Scottish football. They changed playing football for sheer running power. The fact they very nearly succeeded in wining the league convinced too many others to compensate for lack of ability by running all day and neglecting to build on young lads’ technique. I don’t know if we will ever properly recover.

McDonald said that most of the Hearts team came down with a virus that day.

His whole interview was in terms of what he did against Celtic. Sad really sti in the Big shadow.

Tranmere have their biggest crowd of the season, it’s pouring with rain, over 10.000

They reduced the ticket prices to a fiver.

    Xxxxxxxxxxxxx

    Poor game though.

  6. If the Celtic board don’t see that we want nothing more to do with them now ( I know) then when will they?

Apart from that lets go and hammer the sheep then play it cool in Benfica and let them chase it. Play it cool then take the first goal and relax…

  7. Not politically correct I know but, I had a lot of time for McDonald and for that matter Jardine as players, not bad players if we are honest

Earlier today on this thread, a number of posters mentioned that our chairmain, Mr Bankier, said at the AGM that the joint sponsorshp thing was something that they didn’t “control”.

I haven’t viewed the AGM yet, so I don’t know his words exactly.

A lot of posters were – let’s say – disappointed by that statement.

    Was our chairman misquoted/misinterpreted?

Do you have any idea what he meant by the joint sponsorship decision not being under under our control?

  9. I must concur with my total dislike of MacDonald, both him and that wee junky Johnston. Not that I have ever liked any huns. He is the epitome of your bigoted wee hun nyaff. Why has it taken him so long to write a book, has he discovered that there are more than 2 letters in the alphabet and that B comes after A and not after Fenian.

“McDonald said that most of the Hearts team came down with a virus that day”

    That was probably a euphemism.

Hearts realised they were one point away from winning the league and developed a dose of the skitters.

  13. Lanky Celt

Na mate , canny go along with that. No disrespect but I saw them as archetypal Hun players, do a lot of running, use intimidation, a few hacks here and there , a bit of verbal and very little ability.

  14. Sixtaeseven – I thought I had explained, in my own understanding of this, exactly what he was saying. Celtic progressed the deal unilaterally and at the last minute things changed back to a double deal. That is what the reference is in today’s comments. Nearly there but not quite – when they get there E-Lites tobacco free cigars all round!

Signing out – cos the wife is giving me a sour look after two or three hours on here.

Hoping to see a great game tomorrow vs the Dons.

If the MIBs behave themselves, we should be good for a point or three.

    Bonne nuit, les petits!
