Front-loading transfers with loans

823

Mistakes in the transfer market are more costly to a club than any mistake made on a football field.  It’s too easy to spend millions on a transfer fee and commit to the kind of contract you or I will never see in our lives.  After contracts are signed you need to hope the player settles into the squad, and the city, sometimes hope he learns the language, and assume he can cope with the weather.

So how do you offset this?  In recent seasons Celtic have tried, when possible, to agree a deal in principle, but front-load the transfer with a short-term loan deal.  This gives the club six months or a year to ensure all the boxes are ticked before they commit the kind of resources which would have an impact on multiple seasons.

Miku is a case in point.  Glasgow is a long way from his native Venezuela, and as different from Madrid or Valencia, where he spent most of his adult life, as you will find in Western Europe.  He is a almost certainly a better player than we have seen since he arrived at the end of the summer transfer window, but it would be foolish to suggest he has settled well at the club.

If Miku doesn’t cut it, he will return to Spain in the summer, or sooner, and Celtic will have conserved millions.

Kano got sick one night, very sick. If it was not for so many Celtic Supporters, from so many places, then Kano would be an ornament in a sterile hospital room. That is not nice because Kano still breathes and he still thinks and he is still a Celtic Supporter to his very core.

A lot of money, by a lot of people, was raised to take Kano home. He can’t ever balance the books, but he’d love to.

None of us gets more than one go on the roundabout of life.

Celtic is celebrating their 125th Birthday and indelibly stamping it into their history by encouraging all to embrace the simple ethos of the clubs founding… let’s try and help those who just don’t have more than the air that they breathe.

A lot of Celtic Supporters are doing a lot of different things to raise money for to help those less fortunate than ourselves. To a lot of people that is no big deal.

I’m determined to help Kano pay back the kindness shown to him by the Celtic Support by supporting my club to help unfortunates. No big deal.

There are some from here who have said they will help me to help Kano to help Celtic to help others.

I give up the bevie for 125 days and I give up posting on here for 125 days as of the 1st Jan.. No big deal really, Kano has done both for the best part of four years.

I ‘m going to put a wee bit aside for each day that I don’t drink or post and forward it to Celtic to hopefully fill a belly that needs a feed or to make an unfortunate hope where only darkness is their dawn.(but maybe I can have St. Pat’s day off so I can share a day with some good Tims)

I’ve only one life and when I’m gone I soon be forgotten but if I’ve ever managed to feed one hungry person, if only for one day, then my life was worth something.

No big deal to me or you but the person I fed, he/she will never know where the food came from and they won’t ever be visiting my grave to put some pretty flowers at the base of a head-stone, they’ll be too busy worrying about tomorrow.

I can live with that and like Kano, once I’m gone, I’ll know that I never changed the world, hardly left a mark, but still I took to Celtic and I did something to try and ease the pain of others… sort of the Celtic way.

I am only aiming to do January for Cancer Research Dryatlon.

  10. Wee bit sad to see this morning that Robbie Brady is close to a permanent move to Hull for circa 2 million. I knew it was never a runner but he is a lad I’d love to see wearing the Hoops. I’ve never got over us missing out on James McCarthy and I have a strong feeling that Robbie is destined for even bigger things.

  11. Anyone who decided to lay off drink for January must surely find themselves challenged by the paranoid rantings of Kev Jungle…….As a our club puts clearer water than ever on and off the park his like seems to continue to seek out ‘demons’ and spout mistrust of a leadership which has taken it to it’s current level…

We can all see the challenges, we can all accept the dice are not loaded in our favour and our ‘Board’ or Leadership group do not get everything right, however just as many consumers ‘danced the media tune;’ in slating Caldwell, Strachan, Telfer and Naylor when we were honing in on 4 in a row under Strachan the miserable malcontents seem set on derailing current success….

I recall he was not winning in some mythical Celtic way…..whatever that meant.

My sense is these types will never be happier than when they are rebelling against injustice (percieved or real) rather than enjoying any success. Heaven forbid these types ever had any real authority in the real world…..

All this in the midst of our traditional rivals incredible alignment behind a patently flawed leadership which is enjoying the most amazing ‘media’ bandwagon….

You really couldnt make it up……

If Hooper isn’t happy with his current agent and wants rid of him, that could be the delay in signing a new deal

With the usual notice period, it would be the summer before he could sign a deal with a new agent present

anyone know of a fab sports physio?………………….

Brian Scott, the ex Celtic physio worked wonders for me with a back problem a couple of years back. I had been attending a chiropractor for weeks, to no avail, and had a ski holiday booked which I thought I would have to cancel. Two days before the trip someone recommended him, I phoned and he told me to come in that day. One session with Brian sorted me out, I was really amazed and extremely grateful. His practise is in Dryburgh Rd or Ave in Rutherglen. 0141 647 7778 is the number, or was when I last went.

  15. Forget his agent, If Hooper wants to sign whats on offer , he will,it’s his decision not the agent.

Kevjungle was going on to BMCUW about the attendances dropping by 20-30 k in 2009. They didn`t, but that didn`t suit his rantings. He is not a Celtic supporter.

The guy comes on here for one reason – to noise people up.

His posts are always calculated to get a response. Several people have tried to get reasoned debates going with him and he always does the classic troll thing of avoiding the point and changing to other topics.

A few weeks ago his posts were ignored and he disappeared sharpish. On his return he actually engaged in some reasoned debate on points raised by others. The following morning it was back to the old routine.

It’s easy to judge him as a half-wit, but he knows exactly what he is doing.

  20. no, i’m neil lennon “i’ll never walk alone” (fourstonecoppi ) – I would also recommend Paul Kelly or indeed his brother. They are both excellent.

  21. For those looking for a response from Green on Celtic’s comments on Deidco, this is not it but here is something no doubt with his blessing from yesterday’s programme from the permanently petted lipped Andrew Dickson.

Rangers owe Hugh Adams a debt of gratitude

    6 Jan 2013 00:01

WITH the fund raiser’s passing, the Ibrox side should reflect that they owe Adams a great deal

IMPORTANT information can get lost over the course of a frantic festive period.

The sad death of former Rangers director Hugh Adam shouldn’t be allowed to come into that category.

Adam was the man who raised so much money for Rangers he was once asked in private by Celtic if he would consider leaving Ibrox and doing the same thing for them.

He declined because it wouldn’t have been the right thing to do to his way of thinking, honesty and integrity being the mark of the foremost fundraiser of his time.

But an uneasy feeling persists that Adam has been airbrushed from Rangers’ history as an embarrassment and an inconvenience.

A banishment which seems to stem from his disagreements with David Murray in the days before the former owner of the club received his knighthood.

Yet on the same weekend Adam died at the age of 87, Alistair Johnston, the former Ibrox chairman, issued a damning verdict on Murray’s final days in charge of Rangers.

Johnston said allowing the club to pass into the hands of Craig Whyte, a man he described as being “addicted to lying and cheating and a chancer” amounted to what was a “heinous offence”.

I checked the dictionary definition of “heinous” – it stands for evil and shocking.

It is, by anyone’s standards, a savage indictment of one Rangers chairman by another to accuse him of having carried out an evil and shocking transaction by delivering the club into the hands of a man who brought it to its knees.

But Johnston is always held up as a reliable and credible witness on all things related to Rangers and would never be exiled for stating his opinion. Or even queried over the motivation for delivering his damning indictment so long after the event.

Adam, on the other hand, seems destined to pass into history having been discredited and dismissed as being nothing other than an old man with an axe to grind, which is as unfair as it is insulting.

The only thing he appears to have been guilty of is being wise ahead of his time. Ten years ago Adam sold 59,000 Rangers shares in the belief they would ultimately prove to be worthless because he lacked faith in the direction the club was taking.

The money man in him made him look at the club’s financial excesses and forecast bankruptcy was the only logical conclusion for Rangers.

Administration, liquidation and relocation to the Third Division, the fate which Rangers suffered in 2012, underlined the accuracy of Adams’ prediction.

Don’t shoot the messenger because you don’t like the message, as if that happens there will need to be a similar sentence passed on Johnston after what he said.

Adam created a phenomenal money-maker for Rangers and funded the redevelopment of their stadium. There were Celtic fans who subscribed to Rangers Pools on a weekly basis because it offered prize money worth winning. Can you imagine that happening today in the prevailing mood of refusing to give the “other lot” the time of day, never mind a cash contribution?

Adam qualifies as a genius for bringing in an £18million windfall that would be equivalent to £70m in today’s money.

That’s why he was coveted by his employer’s greatest rivals when they most needed an inspired fundraiser.

Adam’s passing as a result of heart failure should be marked by recognising his contribution to Rangers and giving him dignity in death.

An SPL commission will determine whether Hugh’s allegation that Rangers used dual contracts to make undisclosed payments to their players was an accurate one. In the meantime, he is entitled to posthumous credit where it is due.

There’s no need to erect any statues and no request for a minute’s applause before Rangers’ next home game.

Just let the man rest in peace knowing that he did his best for the club he worked for.

The rules of personal vendettas seem to be that you fail to acknowledge your own errors and refuse to give credit for the good work done by others.

    Hugh deserves better than that.

I only intended lasting until the family and I take my dads ashes over to Derry.

I usually do the month of January as a wee health kick, beyond that well it’s zombie territory :>)

  24. Burnley78 – I have decided to bin the booze for at least the next 3 months. Never mind Kev Jungle, luring Gin & Tonic was a real test not to take a gulp. The bonus is waking up on a Saturday and Sunday morning without a fuzzy Heidi or a full blown hangover.
