Gilmour and clubs of the heart

323

Stewart Gilmour was angry a year ago when Scottish Football League clubs offered Newco Rangers a place in the Third Division, rejecting a proposal to parachute them into the First Division, saying “This is horrific news for St Mirren Football Club. The consequences are terrible, catastrophic even.

“The St Mirren board will meet in the days after that SPL meeting and decide what is the best way forward but we are already looking at major redundancies [no they weren’t].

“Unfortunately, the people in the SFL have not bought into that [proposal to put Newco in the First Division]. I just hope they realise the damage they have done to Scottish football.”

I. Just. Hope. They. Realise. What. Damage. They. Have. Done. To. Scottish. Football.

Few could understand his anger at the time.  Gilmour voted against parachuting Newco into the SPL, perhaps left with little choice by their fans and his fellow directors, so it was bizarre he felt comfortable criticising others for doing exactly what he did.

Nothing has changed.  Gilmour wanted Newco in the second tier of Scottish football a year ago and he wants exactly the same now.  This is the Great Blue Hope.

Newco prophesised the failure of Scottish football without them at the head.  Now, with Gilmour’s assistance, their projections look less foolish.

I make no personal judgement on Gilmour.  If I was an SPL club chairman and Celtic needed me to vote one way to enable their financial survival, I would do it without question.  We are football people and this is how we are wired.  The club of the heart comes first.

It’s too late to salvage Newco.  Invitations to a newly formed second tier are a fantasy, but you can set your watch on a forthcoming media campaign backing the idea.  We shall not be moved.

Young Celts enjoy successful tournament experience

By: Laura Brannan on 16 Apr, 2013 10:04

CELTIC´S Under-17 and Under-20 squads touched down in Glasgow yesterday, (Monday), after successful tournaments in Russia and United Arab Emirates respectively.

Tommy McIntyre´s U17 side came second in the Spartak Cup, losing out to Barcelona on their head-to-head result, despite being equal on points and boasting a greater goal difference.

Meanwhile, Stevie Frail and John Kennedy´s U20 side, which also included a host of Development Squad players, finished third in the Al Ain International Youth Tournament.

Both squads return home with cup finals to look forward to. The U17s have a Glasgow Cup final, while the U20s face Dunfermline in the SFA Youth Cup final at Hampden on May 1. The U20s are also closing in on their fourth consecutive league title with just six games remaining.

Gilmour has just made himself a load of ENEMIES.

Normally when someone feels so strong about any subject, that they go out on a limb to fight their corner, they would take every opportunity to get their point of view across to a wider public, so when Stewart Gilmour refused to be interviewed after yesterday’s crucial vote at Hampden, it seemed very strange indeed.

Maybe Gilmour felt a bit embarrassed by the fact that Peter Lawwell destroyed his main argument against reconstruction by proposing to change the 11-1 voting procedure to 9-3, a move that could affect Celtic more than any other team in the SPL.

I firmly believe Gilmour is acting in cahoots with Sevco CEO Charles Green, the fact they had a cosy meeting at new St Mirren Park the day we played there strengthens that view. Green and Gilmour could have met any day of the week, but Chuckles doesn’t do anything without maximising the publicity, a bit like Alex Salmond.

Why Green is actually still in charge at any football club is confusing to say the least. SFA rules state you must be a “Fit and Proper Person” to run a football club, surely openly admitting acquiring a football club by lies and deception would mean you fail on that principle. And just exactly why is a 3rd Division team commenting on a decision taken by Premier League teams?

I don’t profess to fully understand the proposals which were thrown out, but I believe Celtic was agreeing to give some of the cash they would have been entitled to, to teams in the lower divisions.

I also believe there was greater interest from potential sponsors and from the television companies if the new proposals were voted through, was that going to mean a new contract with the television companies? Possibly meaning less Sevco matches being televised live and therefore less revenue for them.

It looks like there has been some shady dealings going on behind the scenes, and if there was an Olympic Gold Medal for shady dealings, then Chuckles Green would be favourite to win it, followed closely by Stewart Gilmour.

So where does that leave Scottish Football now? Is the grand plan to introduce an SPL 2 and invite Sevco into that? I’m certain Green and Gilmour have a plan, but their devious plan can only succeed with the approval of the other teams in Scotland, and more importantly the supporters of football.

I am 100% convinced that Gilmour sees Celtic FC as his enemy, and sees Sevco as his ally, there have been plenty of shenanigans going on around St Mirren and Sevco in recent months, St Mirren actually removed one of their Directors for showing confidential information to a lawyer who also represented Sevco.

Gilmour should be more careful in who he chooses to make enemies of, the Celtic support is the largest travelling support in Scotland, we had more supporters at a demonstration in George Square than St Mirren can get through their turnstiles at a home match, I personally will not be going back to New St Mirren Park, not because Gilmour voted the way he did, he’s entitled to do that, but because I believe he voted the way he did with an ulterior motive, and that ulterior motive involves Sevco FC.

I think when the Chairmen and CEO’s of the other ten teams in Scotland report back to their clubs, there might be another fans eruption like the one we had last year, when supporters see their clubs losing maybe up to £500,000 because of the actions of Gilmour, there could be a call for boycott’s.

One thing is for sure, Peter Lawwell said at the start of this season that Celtic FC have a stand-alone policy, we are the only team to have played in the top division in Scotland throughout our long proud and successful history, we will still be around for the next 125 years, I’m not so sure St Mirren or Sevco will.

Anyone else think its a little bit strange that the Times have suddenly taken an interest in the Sevco saga ???

Its not as if they have commented much previously. Could this be a sign off a bigger story unfolding ie: the truth and all its dirty little secrets ?

Maybe I’m just getting excited now that Craigy Whyte is back !!!

I hated how Rangers games could bring out the berserker in otherwise mild-mannered, peace-loving men.

    May they never return

  6. Paul67

I think Stewart Gilmour does want a fast as possible entry into the top tier of Scottish Football for Sevco but this is more probably based on the income the games against Sevco whith their mass following of ex-Rangers fans.

    It makes sense to him.

Most St Mirren fans like most other clubs are not enamoured with the proposed 12-12 -18 and he will find general support amongst the fans on this because they feel that in a larger top division of 14 they would have a greater chance of survival.

This is indeed unenlightened self interest but it many ways understandable. He has used the 11-1 voting structure as a red herring, claiming that it was not part of the original outline in principle but the Dundee CEO confirmed that it was always part of the proposals and only for restricted items.

Gilmour has not played this well but he is unlikely to face any reproach from his own set of supporters (and I do mean St Mirren fans on this occassion).

That is just the Companies House site having been updated to give effect to the form that was lodged recently.

It doesn’t add anything to what we already knew.

Chuckles’ statement wanted us to infer that his signature on the appointment form was forged, though he didn’t actually say as much.

If it was forged, and that is proved, then the form, is invalid whatever the Company register shows.

  10. Much as I await their imminent second crash, I would advise many, and many I rate as beyond smart, to please ignore any digital representation of proof that ole Craigy Boy was this that or the next thing. There’s a lot of misinformation being released. Trying to muddy the waters.

  13. Efe’s bravery helped win that game in extra time on Sunday.

Like many, I would prefer he curtail his dribbling in our final 3rd (Izzy used to do this too often too). However we have to allow some gambling with possession to make space for a pass or to pull a defender out of position. Efe’s dribbling and JF’s bursts of acceleration can do this for us. Until, and if, Rogic matures into the up-the-middle passer that we have lacked since Petrov left, then we have to allow Efe to make his moves.

He’s also a good threat in the box for set plays.

  15. Anyone want to write for the magazine -just let either myself or paul know. You can email celticquicknews@gmail.com – we have two more editions this season, one at the end of April where we will celebrate winning the league and then another mag just after the Cup Final where hopefully we are celebrating the double.

You will also be hearing about the launch of CQN Books in the next week or so. We have just about finished the first book and Paul will be announcing details very soon. The book will be published in May, will be sold at Celtic stores and all good bookstores and obviously we will be promoting a special deal on this for CQNers. We think that you will love it! It is looking fabulous and has contributions from a major broadcaster, one of the most talented internet bampots, a world class rockstar and of course an absolute Celtic legend. We are still waiting on Paul writing his intro!

The accounts also show that the debt to Langston, the company represented by ex-City owner Sam Hammam, is put at £19.2m, with a one-off payment of £5m due if City reach the Premier League while the debt is outstanding.

On the subject of Gilmour’s Ayes, remember Green co-opting the floor at a clubs’ meeting recently and trying to float the idea that the SPL is trading insolvent?

Perhaps he has persuaded SG that the SPL is teetering on the brink and is ‘desperate’ to push through re-structuring to release some new sponsors’ dough…vote No and Sevco are back at the top table as collapse ensues…

  23. ASonOfDan,

    – here’s the QPR ‘In The Big Time’ maths –

“Queens Park Rangers secured a £15m loan from Barclays Bank in Hong Kong last month, charged against all the club’s assets including Loftus Road, significantly borrowing for the first time during Tony Fernandes’s regime as majority owner.

Fernandes and his partners finalised the loan on 18 March, in agreement with QPR’s remaining shareholders – the family of the Indian steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal. All parties insist they “remain wholly committed to the club’s short, medium and long-term objectives”.

However, with QPR approximately £90m in debt due to the significant loans paid in by Fernandes and his partners during the 2011-12 financial year, totalling £55m, and the Mittal family, who lent £27m, supporters may be concerned at the shift in approach.

The £15m was secured on the first working day after QPR’s 3-2 defeat to Aston Villa in the Premier League, a result which left them seven points adrift of safety, but the club claims the loan had been agreed well in advance of that date.”
