Goal shyness hampers Celtic

880

Overall I was pleased with many aspects of Celtic’s play yesterday.  We dominated large parts of the game and got in and around the Hearts penalty area often enough to score the proverbial barrel load.

Hearts scored a good goal.  The flick from Beattie and run from Skacel were both exquisite, although a deflection off the blameless Kelvin Wilson was crucial.  Enough has been said about the second Hearts goal already.  Defensively we were good.

Midfield also played well, to a point, forcing Hearts into retreat for all but the opening 20 minutes of the second half.  Ki Sung-Yueng should have scored twice but he’s never been a player for back post headers and I was more surprised he found himself in that position than he missed both opportunities.  He is a player who continues to impress.

The question we should turn our attention to is why Celtic didn’t score more goals?

It is probably not an exaggeration to suggest Emilio Izaguirre is the best left back at the club in 30 years.  Skilful and intelligent in possession, Celtic look composed when he is on the field, but he’s being kept out of the team by a free transfer from Aberdeen because Charlie Mulgrew is manufacturing the most crucial item in the game – goals.

I’m close to advocating ‘Give the ball to Charlie’ tactics.  He has the ability to fire in remarkably dangerous crosses and has an instinctive awareness that the purpose of the game is to score goals.  Kris Commons shares this awareness but Kris has had a wretched season and is still rescuing his game from injury and early season loss of form.

In these circumstances, Neil Lennon cannot afford to play Izaguirre if it involves dropping Mulgew as this would severely hamper Celtic’s ability to put the ball in the net.  If the manager wants to use Emilio, particularly in Europe next season when retaining possession will be crucial, Charlie has to play left midfield.

Scoring goals is the primary responsibility of the strikers.  None of Celtic’s current crop are impressing at the moment, but we need to look further upstream first.

We have an outstanding original canvass painting of Neil Lennon available for purchase on eBay to kick start our summer charity fundraising. This year the beneficiaries will be Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research, Martin Chambers Foundation and The Neuroblastoma Alliance, Aberdour PS PTA, The Haven, Blantyre. The painting, by US based artist, Joseph Gormley, is an outstanding memento of our manager during these times.

  1. James,

As I’ve said on Facebook to you re Licensing Regulations, there are ways around all of this for a Newco if UEFA allows an exception. I don’t think that they will – but until I know for definite I won’t be banking on anything.

One other point – if the huns buy St Mirren and change the name it could be argued that would amount to an interruption of the license and therefore it could be suspended. Of course that can be got around by UEFA too I suppose …

Having read that, a halfwit lawyer could stop any newco participating in scottish football for the forseable, or am I being a halfwit ?

It seems to me that a few bob spent on keeping them in the courts, should result in what’s required.

  6. The Ghood will prevail on

James – sorry for my slowness, but if they dissolved the SPL and everyone played in the SFL next year, the newhun would have to start at the bottom division… why? Couldn’t the SFA just let them start in the new top division, like the SPL were planning to?

Macfurgly from RTC just posted the following:

From the SFA’s club licensing system:

    1.2 Scope

Scottish Premier League Clubs – both the National and UEFA Club Licensing systems are applicable.

It seems the ball is well and truly burst then.

    Hahahahahahaha.

    Gordon_J:

Correct mate. But as The Battered Bunnett and myself, as well as some others, have discussed in detail in the past few months, even IF the SPL, the SFA and UEFA were all willing to ignore their own rules to allow this, the biggest obstacle to a NewCo Rangers being ready might very well be the clock itself.

Remember … if Rangers FC goes out of existence even for a minute, that is the ball game. The SPL regulations make it clear than in event of one of its members vanishing that relegation is cancelled.

Unless the transfer of NewCo assets is rubber stamped on the DAY the winding up order hits, the legal minefield will be too much to navigate before the new season starts. There is NO WAY this will be done by a smooth transfer in the manner that needs to happen. There will days, weeks, perhaps months, when the full legal status of a NewCo will be up for grabs … and it will take only 60 seconds for Dunfermline to have legal rights, Ross County to have legal rights and a host of non-league clubs who believe they have a right to submit applications, to begin the proceedings which will result in the SPL having to suspend the start of the season or worse …. I don’t see how it can be done on time.

  8. James Forrest (or others – haven’t really caught up with this)

I took it to mean those were the deciding requirements for a UEFA club licence in order to compete in European competition. If what you’re saying is true then goodo!

    Bigglescsc

Of course, they can always invent a quick get-out clause for RFC, under the pretext of introducing clearer regulations. We already have ‘insolvency transfer event’. No doubt another buttery phrase will be winging its way through Hampden emails soon enough.

  9. just lisyened to the full SSB AT show . Only way to describe it isFf8CKING FANTASTIC. I apologise for the language but I am what I am, BRTH , fantastic work also, more power to your keyboard.

How sweet was it to hear the nuggets on SSB sounding and behaving like the dimwits they are. Playground bullies being bettered infront of their audience, Lovely.

As I say mate, even if this DOESN’T cover the UEFA license (which I think it certainly does) the crucial line about licenses not being transferable “between legal entities” is the killer. How they get around that I don’t know.

The hurdles in front of this lot are simply too great now. Can these bodies REALLY waive their own rules for tax cheats? And even if they were willing to do that, would all these bodies be willing to waive those requirements to a team which has broken financial fair play rules AND contract rules, on an industrial scale?

With the whole world watching now?

The Scottish media KNOWS the argument can’t be sustained. When the Daily Record and the Herald run stories on the SAME DAY arguing that a NewCo should start in Division 3, someone has been briefing them on what is GOING to happen …

A frog put in a pot of boiling water will jump out. Put the frog in a pot of cold water and heat it up slowly and you get frog soup.

Rangers fans are being prepared for the worst. Look at how both articles today told them a fresh start is something they should EMBRACE ….

It has already started and they don’t even know it.

  13. 2nd attempt to post from Berlin…so short version

BRTH tonight linked here earlier is the best post in Timdom this year bar none.

The investigation ( hornet ) into corporate tax fraud at HBOS which has stopped at (sir) David murrays door is a ticking timebomd. also as I speed read .. 1 hour later here…there is an inference that the sale of his metals business to Americans relied on stellar profitable growth ( created by interco margin on club deck steel sales to RFC). if the American due diligence relied on the HBOS input ( Murray benefactor Gavin masterton ) it becomes a real can of worms ….operation hornet is aptly named.

On top of cheating, EBTs, tax evasion, double contracts the corporate banking landmine would put the level of corruption off the richter scale. There are some very quiet people now and if this goes the full way there will be some new additions to the big hoose…..and it’s not the one in Govan.

  14. JF- Interesting stuff mate,if you have read BRTHs post on RTC married to Yorkston’s staunch (sic) support of his brothers,I get the impression they will be happier to see der hun in SPL,rather than fight their own corner.FWIW i have posted a few times saying I have no faith in UEFA,FIFA ,Platini getting involved in a “local difficulty”. The Council for Arbitration in Sport, might be a better bet.HH.

Celts bid to put Lennon in the clear as boss faces raft of disciplinary charges

Celtic will attempt to clear Neil Lennon of any wrongdoing in last month’s Old Firm game by pointing to what they perceive as ‘wide disparities’ in the reports submitted by two match officials in the aftermath of the match against Rangers at Ibrox.

The Parkhead manager will make a personal appearance in front of a judicial panel at Hampden on Thursday after being sent off at half-time in his side’s 3-2 defeat on March 25.

The panel will also sit in judgment on comments Lennon made regarding referee Willie Collum, who turned down a late Celtic penalty appeal in the League Cup Final loss to Kilmarnock the previous week.

Celtic, however, believe they have spotted significant inconsistencies with the reports submitted by Calum Murray and Iain Brines, who were referee and fourth official at the Ibrox clash, which leaves a question mark over the validity of the misconduct charge Lennon now faces. The Celtic manager was spoken to by Brines during the first half following the dismissal of defender Cha Du-Ri and then confronted Murray in the tunnel at half-time.

It’s understood the verbal exchange was witnessed by Brines, Celtic security chief Ronnie Hawthorn, press officer Iain Jamieson and coach Alan Thompson. Lennon gave his team talk before being summoned to Murray’s room, where he was dismissed for ‘continuous inappropriate behaviour’.

It’s understood Celtic’s defence will hinge on the fact that the reports both officials submitted on the exchange in the tunnel do not tally. Lennon’s criticism of Collum in the League Cup Final will also be on Thursday’s agenda.

After seeing Anthony Stokes denied a late penalty, Lennon described the decision as ‘criminal’. He could face more sanctions in the aftermath of his side’s loss to Hearts in Sunday’s Scottish Cup semi-final.

Lennon ran on to the Hampden pitch to remonstrate with referee Euan Norris after he awarded Hearts a last-minute penalty for handball against Joe Ledley.

The Celtic boss was infuriated his midfielder was penalised when standing two yards from Marius Zaliukas’s shot. Moments later, Andy Webster went unpunished for a seemingly identical incident in the Hearts box.

Lennon could also be charged for venting his frustration on Twitter by saying: ‘Referee told players he thought Wanyama handled. I feel so sorry for the players and fans. I think it’s personal myself.’

The Northern Irishman has yet to hear if he will face action in relation to comments he made in the build-up to the game with St Johnstone on April 1.

That gets done at the Lodge and is hard to prove.

  18. I understand that Dougal has been spouting off tonight back in STVLAND. He is just doing his masters bidding, another one of the Lanarkshire Ref Mafia being sent out to keep the real culprit from falling from a very high place.

  19. I seem to remember MIM charging der hun £18-20 million for the steel beam for the Club Deck all those years ago.Seemed to me at the time (and now),an unbelievable amount of money for someone in the “trade” to charge……….

  20. James,

If the huns go bust during the season Dunfermline stay up, Ross County are promoted and there is no space for a newco.

So why do you think there is such a drive to make sure they survive until the end of the season?

The Newco would have to apply for its own license; you’re right to say that a transfer can’t take place.

There are more obstacles for a newoo to get into the league than at first meet the eye. It probably can’t happen – but until I know for definite that there is no chance then I’m not starting to count the chickens. They have too many friends in high places to take anything for granted.

I would imagine we could, it would take a few small shareholders to get together and consult a lawyer to see where it can take us, I would be willing to weigh in with a few bob.

  25. eirecamper

In saying that, there must be a lawyer out there who would be willing to do the spade work for free in the begining, it’s the big boys who will cost the money.

All that’s needed is the spade work to take them to court, that should suffice, but still willing to weigh in.

  26. the glorious balance sheet on

Presumably the referee observer named Les Norris in the following link is Euan Norris father. The father is the region`s referee observer and the son is the President, a nice cosy arrangement that.

    http://www.sfar-lanarkshire.org.uk/structure

The Lanarkshire Referees Association appears to be a family organisation, so many people following in their father`s trade of honest mistakes over the years, Hugh and Andrew Dallas, Willie and Davie Syme, and now Les and Euan Norris.

However the bit that really caught my eye is this excerpt from the news pages where some up and coming goat fiddler is describing his experience on a recent international refereeing course:-

“A welcome visitor at the end of the course was Hugh Dallas, it was fantastic to meet up with him again and it was great to see the reaction of our colleagues who were asking for photos with him.

He really is a fantastic ambassador for Scottish refereeing.

I would be delighted if I can achieve a fraction of what he did during his career”.

    http://www.sfar-lanarkshire.org.uk/news

So there you have it – Hugh Dallas, sacked for sending offensive anti-Catholic emails is held up today as a hero and a poster boy and indeed a “fantastic ambassador for Scottish refereeing” by the rank and file of the Lanarkshire Referees Association, of which Euan Norris happens to be President.

Neil Lennon thinks its personal. I know it is.

  27. !!Bada Bing!!

The big blue beam- please read the 2nd para, looks like CW might have been around for longer than we thought! :-))))

When David Murray arrived on the scene, he wanted improvement on the pitch and asked Graeme Souness to take Rangers into the modern era. He also wanted improvements off it – and sanctioned the ambitious new tier on the old Main Stand. Two cranes had to be imported from Argentina to lift the 141-metre, 480 tonne beam into place. It cost pounds 20 million – twice the price of the three other stands…..

To add to the celebrations, Rangers would like to find the whereabouts of the manager’s cocktail cabinet. Club historian Mason said: “It disappeared ages ago and no one can trace it. It was a magnificent art deco cabinet in black lacquer with the RFC logo. It wasn’t stolen, it was just removed before we appreciated the history of the club. I’m not saying we want it back, although Rangers might consider it. But it’s nice to know where these things have ended up, even just for our records. Wooden RFC logos from the old press box must be out there somewhere as well. Some people may have documents or photographs that would add to the great Ibrox jigsaw. I’d be happy to examine any item sent to me at Ibrox – and return it, of course”

    Hahahahahaha!
