Government faux grandstanding a year late

235

There is something demeaning about Celtic putting out daily messages asking fans who have zero interest in attending Celtic Park on Sunday to stay away from the game at the insistence of the Scottish Government.

They have been forced into this by Government muscle flexing.  The Government have zero intention of cancelling the fixture but cannot control that information from leaking through their ranks.  This pantomime will continue until the First Minister, or perhaps her Justice Minister, will concede that Celtic and the visitors have ‘done enough’ to allow the fixture to go ahead.  Celtic’s messaging has been crystal clear for 12 months; we are not the transgressing party, but we are useful to deflect from the core problem.

If only the Government had been as keen to act last March.  They froze when they should have made a decision, allowing 50,000 fans to attend a Europa League game in Ibrox, including thousands of visitors from Germany.  Despite first hand access to the scientific evidence, they continued to divert their eyes until football took the unilateral decision to call a halt to the sport, two days before another 50,000 were due at Ibrox.  A year on and your Government has matured into faux grandstanding around the most important issue of our lives, mark my words, the game will go ahead, this is all false.

  1. When you look at the facts, no penalties conceded, no red cards in open play, hunners of penalties to them, no covid breaches that, to the authorities, mattered a f8ck, millions of free kicks against them that the mibs denied, plus they are ugly bastards.

    NO GUARD OF HONOUR!

What to that mob know about honour?

It is actually a two part doc. and the one I referred to above is on St Patrick’s Day at 8.30pm

Freeview channel 84 over here. The first one on now, deals with the period 1909 – 1918, including the passing of the 1912 Home Rule Act (Governance of Ireland) to be implemented in 1914, the reaction orchestrated by Carson, the UVF, the General Strike, the Irish Citizens Army (James Connolly) etc

Not to mention WWI. Don’t know of ‘Rebellion’ but will look out for it.

  3. A page 5 podium is in my opinion, an omen.

If we play Christie we will lose 5-0 , at least.

I don’t care how much energy he has, all wasted imo.

    Play young Henderson.

Can see a pass, has dig. and oh he lacks experience.

Whatever experience Christie has,has benefited the team approximately f all in recent months.

Does anyone think Kennedy will not copy our recently departed failing manager?

  5. And Christie is due a goal against the huns.

The are all due a goal against the huns.

  6. Go tell the Spartim on

Kennedy will follow the same path as before him, it’ll be same formation and tried , trusted and tired lineup, we’ve got better players than them bout time they showed up

  7. I think the” climb in” photo is Morton’s Cappielow, seem to remember being able to do that down there, may be wrong though, por cierto

  8. Rebellion is excellent.

Henderson should feature way more that he’s been allowed to.

As per HotSmoked, if a guard of honour is the precedent, do it…..then do them.

If not, don’t do it and still do them.

I think Jim has gone a bit overboard about the Press there- he’s mostly quoting lines of attack made by Scottish Tory Politicians. I already hold a low opinion of the Scottish Press and Tory Politicians but most of the adverse comment was political and not journalistic.

Unconvincing as Jim’s article was, it was 3000% more convincing than JHB citing a speech by Brecit David Davis on the wrongdoings in Scotland.

Nicola has a case to answer on a) The Care Home Scandal (along with all UK governments) and b) On lying to parliament about dates in the Salmond case.

It would be a tawdry fall if Nicola lost her job because of mishandling the Salmond sex pest enquiry but you must never directly lie in Parliament- let’s wait and see if the official investigation clears her before we listen to partisan spin.

Anyway she’s just announced that pubbing and hugging are gonna make a comeback, so i’m gonna stay away from Alex Salmond for a while.

  10. Fair enough it is the eve of St Patrick’s so switch to ‘Crock of Gold’ Julien Temple’s profile of Shane MacGowan, on BBC4 or BBCi Player any time after that. Jesus it’s only just started and there’s Gerry Adams and Martin McGuinness meeting Shane in a pub I used to drink in. Filthy McNastys!

And no, I wasn’t there at the time…

Your posts within a couple of minutes both expose the flaws in the justice system in Scotland.

David Davis is correct in his initial assertions that the Scottish parliament was hastily set up and needs reformed for it own good and for the good of the people of Scotland. Salmond and Rangers administers cases are both more extreme examples of injustice and lack of proper procedure than I ever thought I would see in Scotland.

In that era, Tony Blair was rushing around giving out constitutional favours like confetti.

You want a tax arising Parliament? You got it.

You want a mayoral system for you city? You got it.

You want a non-tax-rasing assembly? You got it.

He got the good headlines the next morning but created a constitutional shambles with many areas ultimately losing out and feeling left out as their people watched others across a boundary or border getting local powers that they didn’t.

My own view (maybe wrong) is that this lead to so many people feeling so removed from power that they voted for Brexit.

I am no expert in the constitution but I did study Public Law st university for one year.

Don’t ever think that the constitution is not important. It is foundation of everything.

In my opinion it is flawed within Scotland and between the English regions and needs to be put back together again whether within the UK or between independent nations.

Gordon brown is proposing a federal approach and Boris Johnson does seem to be making moves to decentralise at least some of London’s power/jobs and invest in infrastructure in the north of England so maybe the constitution will get repaired.

  12. Clever speech by Davis.

Simultaneously sticks the knife into Sturgeon and her regime, blames Westminster for the structural deficiencies of Holyrood and calls for stronger powers for Holyrood and MSPs.

Will be interesting to see how the cult respond.

i agree, re care homes and i think generations to come will unpick all our govts behaviour at this point in history and the policies running up to ,at its onset, and since. We will not learn anything as blame will be neutralized to protect boris and nicola/(political power) done our best nonsense

massive questions seem to be ushered aside as more and more debt is piled on future generation and it looks to me as tho the next

oxbridge generation is getting its wealth (via covid) The pilfering of money under the guise of nhs spending is wrong and needs equal scrutiny.

    ——————-

With the forbearance of Connaire12 for the brief foray into the chat here….

I stress I’m not commenting on the case per se – rather about some of the conduct / questionning during the part of the inquiry that I saw, and about the subsequent reporting (i.e., similar to the report posted by AT).

Although that report was a wee bit of a personal rant by the author, to be fair, I think it was presented as such.

I did agree with some of the main points – and had made some similar comments watching a bit of the inquiry and subsequent reporting.

In particular, the BBC Scotland reporting by Glenn Campbell on the evening of Sturgeon’s appearance at the inquiry was extremely unbalanced and one-sided. Certianly not an even-handed representation of the questions / answers that I had watched myself.

I do think the points in that report are very apt re: the factually incorrect questions / deliberate misquotations / misrepresentations of formal findings that were put to Sturgeon. Jackie Baillie in particular was really poor in this respect.

This should be a well-conducted, inquiry – using factual evidence to seek answers. The reporting of it by the national broadcaster should also be factual and balanced.

Neither of these characteristics were in evidence from what I could see – very poor standards from some of the inquiry panel members and very poor journalism standards from BBC Scotland news.

In fact if we do it as some are saying it will make us the bigger man. That is utter crap.

It will show us more weak leadership and utter disrespect for the majority of its paying customers.

  20. Tuesday 17th March 1981

Lá Pádraig inniú ‘s mar is gnách níor thárla aon rud suntasach, bhí mé ar aifreann agus mo chuid gruaige gearrtha agam níos gaire, agus é i bhfad níos fearr freisin. Sagart nach raibh ar mo aithne abhí ag rá ran aifreann.

Bhí na giollaí ag tabhairt an bhia amach do chách abhí ag teacht ar ais ón aifreann. Rinneadh iarracht chun tabhairt pláta bidh domhsa. Cuireadh ós cómhair m’aghaidh ach shiúl mé ar mo shlí mar is nach raibh aon duine ann.

Fuair mé cúpla nuachtán inniú agus mar shaghas malairt bhí an Nuacht na hEireann ann. Táim ag fáil pé an scéal atá le fáil óna buachaillí cibé ar bith.

Choniac mé ceann dona dochtúirí ar maidun agus é gan béasaí. Cuireann sé tuirse ormsa. Bhí mo chuid meachain 57.50 kgs. Ní raibh aon ghearán agam.

Bhí oifigcach isteach liom agus thug sé beagán íde béil domhsa. Arsa sé ‘tchim go bhfuil tú ag léigheadh leabhar gairid. Rudmaith nach leabhar fada é mar ní chrlochnóidh tú é’.

Sin an saghas daoine atá iontu. Ploid orthu. Is cuma liom. Lá fadálach ab ea é. Bhí mé ag smaoineamh inniú ar an chéalacán seo. Deireann daoine a lán faoin chorp ach ní chuireann muinín sa chorp ar bith. Measaim ceart go leor go bhfuil saghas troda.

An dtús ní ghlacann leis an chorp an easpaidh bidh, is fulaingíonn sé ón chathú bith, is greithe airithe eile a bhíonn ag síorchlipeadh an choirp. Troideann an corp ar ais ceart go leor, ach deireadh an lae; téann achan rud ar ais chuig an phríomhrud, is é sin an mheabhair.

Is é an mheabhair an rud is tábhachtaí. Mura bhfuil meabhair láidir agat chun cur in aghaidh le achan rud, ní mhairfidh. Ní bheadh aon sprid troda agat. Is ansin cen áit as a dtigeann an mheabhair cheart seo. B’fhéidir as an fhonn saoirse.

Ní hé cinnte gurb é an áit as a dtigeann sé. Mura bhfuil siad in inmhe an fonn saoirse a scriosadh, ní bheadh siad in inmhe tú féin a bhriseadh. Ní bhrisfidh siad mé mar tá an fonn saoirse, agus saoirse mhuintir na hEireann i mo chroí.

Tiocfaidh lá éigin nuair a bheidh an fonn saoirse seo le taispeáint ag daoine go léir na hEireann ansin tchífidh muid éirí na gealaí.

    (Translated, this reads as follows:)

St Patrick’s Day today and, as usual, nothing noticeable. I was at Mass, my hair cut shorter and much better also. I didn’t know the priest who said Mass.

The orderlies were giving out food to all who were returning from Mass. They tried to give me a plate of food. It was put in front of my face but I continued on my way as though nobody was there.

I got a couple of papers today, and as a kind of change the Irish News was there. I’m getting any news from the boys anyway.

I saw one of the doctors this morning, an ill-mannered sort. It tries me. My weight was 57.70 kgs. I had no complaints.

An official was in with me and gave me some lip. He said, ‘I see you’re reading a short book. It’s a good thing it isn’t a long one for you won’t finish it.’

That’s the sort of people they are. Curse them! I don’t care. It’s been a long day.

I was thinking today about the hunger-strike. People say a lot about the body, but don’t trust it. I consider that there is a kind of fight indeed. Firstly the body doesn’t accept the lack of food, and it suffers from the temptation of food, and from other aspects which gnaw at it perpetually.

The body fights back sure enough, but at the end of the day everything returns to the primary consideration, that is, the mind. The mind is the most important.

But then where does this proper mentality stem from? Perhaps from one’s desire for freedom. It isn’t certain that that’s where it comes from.

If they aren’t able to destroy the desire for freedom, they won’t break you. They won’t break me because the desire for freedom, and the freedom of the Irish people, is in my heart. The day will dawn when all the people of Ireland will have the desire for freedom to show.

It is then we’ll see the rising of the moon.

    ———

This is the final diary entry entry made by Bobby Sands. He continued his hunger strike and in spite of being elected to the British parliament as an MP for Fermanagh and South Tyrone he died at 1:17am on May 5th 1981.
