Great finals and the rebirth of Scottish football

1214

I am sure you have many great Scottish Cup final memories.  For me the best was Airdrieonians, twice.  My earliest memory of attending a final was the 1975 win, Kenny Dalglish, Paul Wilson and Pat McCluskey.  Watched big Billy and Jinky emerge from Hampden with the trophy after the game.

Then, of course, there was that huge final in 1995.  Six years without a trophy, Celtic were at their lowest point in decades and had already lost a final to Raith Rovers that season.  Beating Airdrieonians in that final is one of the most important victories in Celtic history.

By any measure, apart from Scottish Cups, Hibs are the fifth biggest team in Scotland, yet they haven’t won the Cup in 110 years.  Since then the Wright brothers headed to Kitty Hawk and tried to get ‘Flyer’ off the ground for the first time in history and Teddy Rosevelt made history by becoming the first US president to ride in a motor car.

If they can pull a good 90 minutes together today, Hibs might become the first club in Scottish footballs’ rebirth.  They have reclaimed thousands of fans in recent weeks and are proof that there is life outside Glasgow.

Good luck to them.

  2. 1965 3-2 v Dunfermline my first and probably best final . The 69 was also superb as was the 72.Its always irked me we have never won it more than twice in a row .We have certainly had numerous opportunities to do so.

  3. I hope we get rid of Ki. He has been a bit of a poser for me and gives me the impression that all along he was just using Celtic to get to England. We can do much better and if we can get a few bob all the better.

  4. bjmac- Cheers bud, what do I owe you? :-)

You were only 11 years old at the time- makes me feel ancient!

Disappointed at missing last night, I had prodded BSR and EC67 into going but never got round to organising tickets- my fault- sounded a good night!

    Looking forward to tomorrow though!

  5. Most crucial: 1965 v Dunfermline 1 – 0. Start of BJ’s historic reign after the nightmare years.

    Most enjoyable: 1969 v R****** 4 – 0. Family day in the sun & Big George’s humiliation of Greig.

Most emotional: 1988 v Dundee Utd. 2 – 1. Another family day in the sun. This time the first cup final for my two boys who cried at the end. Fantastic!. They were baptised into the Celtic family and confirmed in their football future all in a glorious couple of hours. Oh, and I nearly forgot, it was the day we gave the two fingered salute to wicked witch of politics. It was also the centenary of the Celtic family and a nail-biter. I remember on the way home we came down the hill to Aitkenhead Rd. and there was an open-top wedding car stopped in the traffic. Within seconds it was covered in green and white everything and anything. If my memory is right, one or two supporters tried to kiss the bride. I do remember the very strange look on the groom’s face. I don’t know if it was fear, shock, excitement or anger. Only thing was the big smile on the bride’s chopper during it all might have indicated that anything else on the honeymoon might have been an anti climax. So much in one day. No wonder I ended up with a bad heart!

Today: Come on Scottish football but especially Hibs!

  6. The 1965 Cup Final — wasn’t at the game– was getting married at St Eunan’s in Clydebank. :<)

  7. Paul67,

Killie beating us in the League Cup Final this season should have been the real start of the rebirth of Scottish football. This should given them a taste for glory, which would be all the more achievable in a hun-free footballing environment, and shown other smaller/medium-sized clubs that trophies were within reach.

Sadly, the Kilmarnock chairman prefers just existing in the SPL and taking the away fans pound to the feeling of pride and glory when returning from Hampden with a trophy.

How ironic it would be if they were to play a part in allowing rangers to remain in the SPL, only to be relegated next season and playing in the Ramsden’s Cup Final in Cumbernauld, Airdrie or the like.

It would be a shame as I think that Kilmarnock, chairman aside, are a decent, community club. I thought that, in addition to giving us the extra stand the day we won the league, they created a good atmosphere/vibe around the day, with their goodwill messages to Stan Petrov and other little touches.

But if the chairman is allowed to make the bed, they will have to lie in it, just like the huns will have to after allowing Murray and Whyte to run their club into the ground. Hell mend em!

    Hail Hail

  8. My memory was also of the 1975 Cup Final against Airdrie, I lived in Aberdeen and I must confess to taking one of those Sooty and Sweep money boxes that used to stand outside the front of chemists, the coppers paid for the train fare.

Also remember being in the hun end and got showered by broken bottles that were chucked.

    Those were the days.

  9. Jo Fillipi’s haircut.

I don’t think the Huns got 147,000 at a Scottish Cup Final. The record is 146,433 at the Celtic v. Aberdeen final of 1937.

  10. Was in at CP earlier on.

Renewed ST and bought one for my daughter while I was at it for £50.

The car park was full, and I think CP have hired out the dining facilites to Hibs for the day.

There was a charity game going on inside CP. Anyone know who was involved?

Coming back home, passed lots of Hibs buses. Really hope they win.

    Cup Final memories ——–

In the late 1950s – my sister and I frequently holidayed with a distant relative of my father in Pittenweem..

Guy was a Hibs fan —– He had a framed newspaper report of the 1902 Cup Final on his kitchen wall .

He was never slow to remind me that Hibs had won the cup by beating Celtic at Celtic Park.

OK. The gauntlet has been thrown down:

IS there a more shameful club in the history of the game than RFCia?

    No.

How much luvvly jubbly are Los Dufferos crankin’ out of the dead horse? Daily fees, per diem expenses,taxis,lawyers,Q.C’s,whatever….

Yet they can’t pay the paperboy?

And have zero intention of doing so.

    Lowest of the low.

  13. 1980 cup final for me. This was my first cup final and glasgow derby. There was a lot of pressure on Celtic that day after throwing away the league to Aberdeen. As 12 year old my brothers took me to all the games then, one would take me from the Port AOH to the home games and the other from the Greenock Shamrock to the away games.

I watched a lot of bad slip ups in the title race especially that 5-1 drubbing at Dundee, that was very painful for a young proud Celt.

That win at hampden made up for it.

  14. At least it’ll be a green & white win.

The minis are just Rankers lite….cut from the same orange cloth.

The bookies are givin’ it to hertz….but I think otherwise.

A good punt : Hibees & Bayern to win overall. Strong chance of both games goin’ to extra time. I don’t believe 90 mins. will be enough in either case.

But hey, that’s just me and I’m in the process of chucking in the cancer sticks & my thinking is just a wee bit radio…..

The 1975 final was the first match i attended. Watched the 1995 final with hundreds of other Tims in the Randwick RSL club in Sydney, when something very unfortunate happened to the Queens portrait,( an obligatory ornament in a RSL club. Great, though hazy, memories of both.

Can I have my shoe back please?

You must have been within a few short yards of me. For Provan’s freekick, from where I was, the ball disappeared momentarily behind the post, only to reappear as if by magic in the back of the net.

I had gone to the game wearing a pair of black espadrilles, Sylvian style. Lost one of them at the first goal. After scrabbling around in vain looking for it, I gave up and concentrated on the last 10 minutes of the game.

The second goal, Aitken, cross, McGarvey, flash, his header hit the same spot as Provan’s free kick. Wow! What a celebration. Deliriously, I took off my remaining shoe, and lobbed it into the air, reminiscent of the old time ‘bunnets in the air’ type goal celebration.

After the game, walking back up the windust filled sleeper steps of the Celtic End, I found the first shoe. Figuring you might have its partner. Get in touch :¬)

    Here’s a wee thought….

Huns knocked out of league cup by Falkirk early doors….

Huns knocked out of Scottish cup by Dundee Utd early doors….

Did any of these competitions collapse and crumble?

On the trouble in the toliets at the last(hopefully) huns game, if only they were smoking instead, their feet wouldn’t have touched the ground!

    ========================================================

Was on the pitch also at the final whistle, I remember it being easy to climb as you could get your first foot on the wall then clamber over. Getting back was a panic and seemed to last an eternity. I could’nt climb back over and had to watch out for the older mhen who were trying to get on to the pitch. Somehow through the madness I spotted a first aid gate opened and duly escaped.

Not afraid to say the next 30 mins was one of the scariest moments of my life.
