Green: Scottish football effectively is Rangers and Celtic

910

Charles Green told TalkSport, “Scottish football effectively is Rangers and Celtic. I mean, there are many other clubs but everyone has to acknowledge that that’s a fact.”

No, no, no, no.  No.  This is not a fact, it is not even a credible opinion.  Instead it is deeply insulting to dozens of teams who conduct their business properly year after year. I have to ask, does he want this project to fail? He is effectively saying – Vote for this plan, you are irrelevant, we are all that matters and this suits our purposes.

It was this erroneous attitude which led to predictions of Armageddon this season.  Instead, the long-suffering clubs who have paid their bills, while others put money which should have gone to the tax man towards buying fooballers, are enjoying a rebirth.

Green added, “Scottish football needs Rangers back at the top and Rangers being a vital part of European football. That’s where we’re trying to get them.”

This is a great season for the SPL.  Financially responsible Hibs, who lost the Scottish Cup final to irresponsible Hearts, are top.  Celtic, with their manageable, low, debt, have just beaten Barcelona in the Champions League.  Aberdeen have their best team in years.  Attendances are up for most clubs.

Before adding, “The Old Firm is the world’s biggest derby.  That’s what world football wants, what broadcasters and sponsors wants, to see those games again.  God willing we’ll see that in the years ahead.”

“The Old Firm” is not the world’s biggest derby, it’s not even Glasgow’s biggest derby.  It doesn’t exist anymore.  As for it being “what world football wants”!  Oh dear.  World football has better things to concern itself with, and don’t bring God into it!

The authenticity of the “Rangers Football Club plc” slideshow presentation which appeared last night is not confirmed, but I hope it’s genuine. It is, literally, fantastic. Notions contained therein that provide for “colts” teams and league reconstruction which “could see Rangers progress faster through the domestic league structures” bring it into perfect alignment with the Scottish Football League plans, which earlier this week Charles Green revealed would be presented today.

I also loved the first point on the summary page, “Profitable business model using prudent assumptions”, despite no mention of future costs, or revenues, in the presentation. Nice that they have confirmed revaluations of property assets at £79m, a fraction of the value the assets were disposed for in the summer.

This will not end well.

You shouldn’t have any problem seeing game in any pub in Barcelona with a TV .

The Spartak v Barca game is an early kick off and will be finished before Befica v Celtic game starts. It would make sense that any (every) venue showing the Barca game would would be interested in the other game from their group ( especially as we could still win the group)

It is hard to believe now that the “Old Firm” was originally a vehicle for raising money for charity. More recent efforts, such as that played at Ibrox in the 1990s, saw Celtic lose badly, but not as badly as the designated charity the game was, ostensibly, organised for. There ended any possibility of taking that particular show on the road, though there was an attempt, just a few years back, to play a game in Boston, where the only beneficiary was to be, well, the Old Firm. Sir David Murray’s decision to align Rangers FC firmly with the Orange Order in both Scotland and Ireland effectively ended any possibility of co-operation on the park, but, and herein lies the problem, not off it.

Point being, the Old Firm, was made up of two football clubs, one of which no longer exists, unless you follow liquidation lists. We know it, many in Scotland do not believe it, or rather do not want to believe it, but the fact is, it is no more. Should our board at any point want to revive it, they would need to rebrand it…..

Green Lantern – back in the 70s my folks left Coatbridge for Troon because it was supposed to be a lovely, quiet seaside town and a bit posh into the bargain. St Patricks primary school and Marr College were both highly rated back then and a busload of kids left daily for QMA in Ayr for those that wanted to attend a Catholic high school.

I blame the introduction of the ferry to/from Belfast for the slide from millionaire’s playground to terrorists’ hideaway :)

My parents did the same thing in 1962 when we moved from Greenock, where I was born.

I attended St Michael’s in Kilwinning – as most Catholic kids from Troon did in those days.

It is a changed place now.

Denia Bhoy. Troon is still a decent place re schools, housing, shops and amenities. You just have to be a bit more careful these days where you go for a drink of an evening and the harbour area can be a bit rough at night.

Interesting to hear you’ve settled in Denia, which is one of my favourite Spanish towns and superior in my opinion to Javea down the road.

My in laws have just bought a place there and I have been looking at prices myself.

I was thinking that myself, but with some of the Bhoys being in Barcelona recently, I thought maybe some had possibly frequented such friendly bar.

My hope now, obviously, is that Barcelona get the desired result in Moscow, or else I would imagine that any Barcelona fans who may be around, shall be cheering a win or Benfica!

Hope to catch up with you soon, maybe before the home game on 24th?

  11. We hope the FTT announcement on Monday coincides with some dawn raids by Strathclyde & Lothian’s finest………

  12. Green Lantern – the market is awash with properties at the moment, plenty of bargains as long as you are not expecting a financial return. It will be a long, long time before the property market recovers here. Some say it has further to fall still.

You are quite right – there are a lot worse places than Troon.

It also has, imho, one of the finest restaurants in Ayrshire – ‘McCallum’s’ at the harbour.

We were playing football in the park and the ball went in the Kelvin and I went in and fetched it out.

This was before the river got cleaned up.

There was a cave on the market here for 125k, the papers were signed today for 40k, including all the taxes.

And I agree, things will get worse before they get any better.

The 30 Scottish Football League clubs unanimously back a restructuring plan to merge with the SPL and have 3 leagues of 16, 10 and 16

    BBCKheredine ‏@BBCKheredine

The SFL restructuring plans now go to the SFA Game board , and need approval from the SPL. But it would require an 11-1 vote from spl clubs

Used to do the Sunday tour to the Kessington when it was a club.

Straight out of 12 o’clock mass into the Rams Head or First and Last Lounge.

At 2.30 (closing time0 it was Kessington time till about 6.

Kebab and bar to Rams Head or First and Last till 11 then back to the Kessington till falling asleep at the bar time.

Once we missed morning mass and headed to evening mass, in between pubs. At the Our Father we were all standing up and one of my pals went crashing through the chairs in front of him (when they were using the hall).

    I nearly passed out laughing.

Sundays in the 80s were great.
