Happy with a down and dirty 0-1

Partick Thistle are second bottom of the table, but there is a bigger story going on.

They have failed to win only one home game in over three months – a 0-1 defeat to Hibs, which means they have a better home record than anyone else in the league over that period.  While only three points above Ross County, they have won three of their four games since losing 2-0 at Celtic Park the week before Christmas, losing only 1-0 at Pittodrie. Alan Archibald’s squad has been bolstered in recent weeks by the return of several of the long-term injured, which has changed the entire perspective on which teams should be regarded as vulnerable in the bottom half of the league.

Thistle now believe they will escape relegation and the play-off spot (tip: County, Accies, respectively).  They will know that the champions will provide their sternest test at home since our disputed 0-1 win their earlier this season, but we will earn any points we collect tonight.

We should win, of course, but I’ll be happy with a down and dirty 0-1.

NEW CQN PODCAST OUT TONIGHT WITH THE ORIGINAL HOLY GOALIE, JOHN FALLON

A Celtic State of Mind presents its 31st instalment of insightful discussion around the culture of Celtic Football Club, the city of Glasgow, and fans of the reigning treble-winning Scottish champions.

Paul John Dykes and Kevin Graham are joined by Lisbon Lion, John Fallon, at The Penalty Spot in Glasgow.

CQN_GREENOCK_0054

The interview took place as part of A Celtic State of Mind’s first live event – Five-a-sides at The Penalty Spot – and, as such, there is some background noise (including mobile interference – apologies) from the audience.

John – The Original Holy Goalie – discusses pay disputes, bonus rows, cigarettes & alcohol at Seamill, breaking up The Lisbon Lions and The Quality Street Gang, the battle of Montevideo, his volatile relationship with Jock Stein, and he finally tells the full story behind his European Cup winners’ medal.

The CQN Podcast has gone from strength-to-strength over the last few months, and there are many more guests lined up in the months ahead from the world of sport, music, film, art, broadcasting, literature and politics.

Our first two editions of 2018 have attracted huge audiences for the interviews with former Celtic Director Tom Grant them politician and life long Celtic supporter Tommy Sheridan, who likes a rant!

  2. AULDHEID @ 2:56 PM,

Great news you’re considering a book… I’d hoped you would. And yes, Clougher Celt definitely gets it…

Interesting you write about Sevco learning. I was looking for a Carl Rogers quote on Forgiveness, couldn’t find it (Will carry on looking).

Still I did come across another quote that rather surprised me, as you may well know, Carl Rogers is a Psychologist who is one of the founders of the Humanist Approach, Psychotherapy and The God Father of The Person Centered Approach.

So he tends to be very empathetic and optimistic when it comes to growth in human potential (he refers to your “waking up” as self-actualization.)

Anyways as I said this quote surprised me…

“The only person who cannot be helped is that person who blames others.” – Carl Rogers

So if this is the case we must go forward with our unconditional forgiveness, if we wait for the “blamers” acceptance to start the process, we will be waiting a long time…

    Hail Hail

The Huns & there weird behaviour ?

    =========================

In a response to Clogher Celt and Chairbhoy I said I would say something about the greatest barrier to Celtic supporters forgiving followers of Sevco, which is their lack of unconditionality, and before I could provide a couple of examples you come up with a perfect instance.

    Spooky. :)

Unconditionality is about accepting others as they are, human beings in the process of growing, stripped of our judgements.

What you ran into is what I and many Tims will recognise, is being dismissed by ‘Rangers’ followers as less than who we really are just because we carry a label of Catholic/Pape/Taig/ etc etc.

Because of that outlook the contents behind the label are never experienced.

It is one or all of the reasons Phil’s warnings of liquidation were disregarded as they think.

    1. They came from a Tim

    2. What would they know and

    3. They hate us like we hate them.

I believe if the cycle of sectarianism and bigotry is ever to be broken, to give room for forgiveness , unconditionailty has to be taught as part of the education curriculum to combat the labelling that is handed down the ‘Rangers’ family. I believe that was part of the work of the IFI in the Belfast Schools project.

    https://internationalforgiveness.wordpress.com/2013/01/03/guest-blog-10-years-of-forgiveness-education-in-northern-ireland-2/

I’ve told the story before of a teenagers from Bridgeton coming to SCIAF for an interview as a trainee web developer.

He started the interview by telling us that it was too far from Bridgeton to Park Circus to travel and besides his mum and dad would not be happy about him working in a Catholic organisation (that does great work).

Our chairman tried to reassure him by saying that he was Jewish and worked for SCIAF, but that went over the lad’s head.

When he left there was a collective shaking of heads because the lad had handled the technical questions excellently and someone said ” give me the boy and I’ll give you the man”

Unconditionality, is not the preserve of the one side of course, but in my experience it does not dominate Tim thinking as it does the other side, Celtic are a club open to all after all, not something that could be said of ‘Rangers’.

I don’t hate them but I do feel sorry for the worst of them who prefer the consequences of their hellish thinking and attitudes to mend them.

Subj: RE: James Kelly’s Repeal the Offensive Behaviour Act Bill

    James,

I believe that repealing the Act with no viable alternative will leave a gap in the legislation. Anthony McGeechan of the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service has stated that: “There would be a gap in the law. The 2012 act gives prosecutors powers that are not available under breach of the peace, section 38 of the 2010 act or the Communications Act 2003.”

Section 1 strengthens the law by focussing on whether b_ehaviour would be likely to incite public disorder, removing the requirement to prove it would cause fear and alarm to a reasonable person, as per breach of the peace and section 38.

Section 1 also has extra-territorial application, which makes it possible for a prosecution to be brought in relation to b_ehaviour which takes place at matches played by Scottish teams abroad.

Unlike elsewhere in the UK, prior to the introduction of Section 6 there was no specific offence in Scots law criminalising threats made with the intent of inciting religious hatred. This was an obvious gap. In 2016-17, there were 6 Section 6 charges reported to the COPFS (one of the 6 charges in 2016-17 was related to football). Out of the 6 charges reported, court proceedings had been commenced in all 6. At the time of publication, 3 cases were ongoing, 2 had resulted in convictions and were given monetary penalties and the other resulted in a harassment order.”

    My reply to that was:

    “” Graeme,

    Thanks for that.

I still believe the Act does more harm than good ( the number of cases dismissed but having already caused great distress to those arrested) but at least this feels like a personal response,

    James B

Any of the Legal Bhoys care to comment on his response ( or mine to him, for that matter) ?

  8. I’ll be disappointed to see the back of Moussa but that’s fitba. The club will endure.

I quite like Edouard by the way. I heard a lot of fans get on his back against Brechin.

  9. Auldheid,

I am finding the discussion on forgiveness and, in particular, unconditionality, truly thought provoking.

A wee question: I seldom attend Celtic v the deid team matches because I hate the way their hatred makes me feel. How do I deal with that?

The same way I do and you are doing.

Don’t go and congratulate yourself on choosing to be what you want to be and not what others provoke you to be?

I’ve often said I don’t hate Rangers but I hate what they can bring out in me.

it is a bit like the story of The Two Wolves.

    https://deanyeong.com/fight-two-wolves-inside/

This is from Bigotry, Football and Scotland that I contributed to in 2013.

My own epiphany, when I realised and internalised my father’s message, came on a visit to Ibrox as a teenager. This required a walk to the St Enoch Underground station from Glasgow Cross to wait in a long queue before getting the Underground to Copeland Road. Bedecked in our Celtic scarves my pals and I were ushered into the near front of the queue by our Rangers supporting pals that we played football in Bell Street with under street light most week nights. We played the usual banter games whilst in the queue and in those days a Rangers victory at Ibrox was an almost certainty, but it was all good humoured. We separated at the ground, they to the Broomloan Road ‘Rangers end’, myself and my pals to the Helen Street ‘Celtic end.’ The singing at first was weak but as the crowd increased so too did the volume and number of hymns of hate that were being hurled from both sides of the stadium at each other. “Hang on a minute,” I thought to myself, “those are my mates over there, not some Orange bastards I want to see die no more than they want to walk knee deep in my Fenian blood” and I stopped joining in. Apart from a Glasgow Cup game in 1967 when Bobby Lennox tore Rangers apart in a 4-0 victory that was to be the shape of football things to come, I have never gone back to Ibrox or attended a Celtic v Rangers game at Celtic Park.

I think it goes back to unconditionality and seeing the intrinsic worth in and of every person as God created them..

It does help if you know them personally as I did above. :)

Good luck to the Celts tonight. Think it’ll require absolute commitment from every player to harvest the three points, so no room in my team for anyone nursing tight muscles.

Thanks sent to Berwick Rangers and Elgin City for publicising the proposals put to clubs about two colt teams being added to League2. It disgusts me that Celtic has hand-cuffed itself to Sevco in an attempt to gain advantage over other Premiership teams and I hope all the lower league teams vote against the pilot project.

Certainly, I’d pay in at the ground on the days matches didn’t coincide with first team fixtures but I’d have no intention of applying for one of the 250 reserved briefs. Home end would do me fine.

  25. Let me add to the Kinky stuff.

When I was at Uni in Loughborough, The Kniks played and drew a crowd of about 300. Paul Jones` Blues Band attracted 1100 as did many other Acts. A year or two later, I was at Uni in Upstate new York and The Kins were playing to an audience of 60,000 in Syracuse. Although they were not so big in the UK by then, they were still very popular in that part of the world (USA East Coast) in the early 80`s.
