Having Scott Brown in your corner

395

Over the weekend, Erik Sviatchenko spoke about Scott Brown as Celtic’s “fine minister” as the captain had authority to fine players who broke discipline.  In Erik’s instance, it was lateness.  Scott Brown has been Celtic’s first line of discipline since Neil Lennon’s first period in charge.  Young players were led by example, as more experienced players were given clear guidance of what was expected from them as a Celtic player.

Reprimanding a player for hitching a ride on a buggy intended for an injured colleague, as I once witnessed, requires oceans of respect from players and coaches alike.  This takes pressure off the manager, who can ration his use of discipline for more select matters, when its rarity has more effect.

Controlling a squad of several dozen well-paid athletes is a challenge when results are not going your way and there are campaigns against the manager.  Players cultivate all the wrong feelings when reading social media and pester their agents.  At these times, the manager’s voice can lose effect.  Scott Brown could not prevent our collapse this season but you do not need to think too hard to figure how heavily Neil Lennon and John Kennedy have relied on him.  Not that you will hear any of this from Scott.  I would have him in my corner before anyone else in football.

  1. Dominic McKay does not ‘buy’ or ‘sign’ players he ‘ finally complete’ deals ‘. The hugely dull nature of this event will be emphasised at all times by using at least one of the following terms – ‘protracted’ ‘long-running’ ‘drawn out affair’ and ‘Dominic’s dithering’

*Gene that’s what our former PP told me. One Holy Thursday night after the service he asked me and a few other ushers to help him dispose of the “Precious Blood”, my response was “cannae Father as I’m aff drink for Lent”, he replied “first of all it isn’t drink but Precious Blood and also Lent finished after tonight’s vigil.

That night after quaffing a couple of litres of it I walked home without a stagger, 6 weeks aff the bevvy, now that is a miracle.

I was convinced that abstinence on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday included alcohol but apparently according to my PP I’ve been mistaken for 50 years plus.

  8. Ooops sorry that was Faleys da, he though played for Raith Rovers and St Johnstone before heading out tae South Africa where a neck injury ended his career.

He played in the same school teams as Evan Williams, Stevie Murray and John O’Hare.

I think every team in Sotland will have supporters who are interested in horse racing etc but only one team is seen by other supporters as being `Catholic`. I feel this fuels the ` one is as bad as the other ` claim.

    Re: Lent debate

40 days and 40 nights from Ash Wednesday is Palm Sunday.

Holy Week is a distinct liturgical period.

Then you’ve got the Triduum of Holy Thursday, Good Friday and the Holy Saturday Vigil.

My current PP maintains Lent starts the 1st Sunday of Lent and goes to Holy Thursday.

My less than fInest hour as an altar server was leading the procession (with the big cross) from the baptismal font at back of church when the new Holy Water gets blessed before the Easter Vigil Mass.

I led the procession turning left back into the sacristy. When I turned round the rest of the troop had turned right for the altar.

The walk of shame followed. I don’t think many noticed. Ah wis 9……

*jack Gilroy fast tracked John aka Solly that’s why I was hazarding a guess.

My bother RIP who also played in the same school team would have been 77 tomorrow and Evan was a year older than him so he would be 4 years older than Solly, possibly right then.

BTW there was a centre forward in that team who went tae Sunderland tae, Nicky Sharkey fae Helensburgh, he was Cloughie’s understudy, Solly was 3rd choice. He played against us in the 5-0 game in the summer of ’65.

The not so slim jim and ian mcccoll who had walked out in the national side in the middle of a WC hmmm debut.

I was always surprised why big ead signed Solly and no Nicky but it seems that the latter was well thought of at Roker Park.

My claim tae fame re Solly was playing in one game with him. St Martin’s didnae have a Boys Guild and for some reason he couldnae get in the school team, might have been something tae dae with age group.

His da was working with the gentleman who ran St Kessogs BG so a deal was arranged between the 2 PP for him tae play for St Kessogs, ebts before their time lol.

One Saturday, I must have been about 12 as I was still in primary, I went intae St Pats tae watch St K playing St Michael’s, my brother played for the former, they had a really good side with a couple of lhads that went Junior and Senior.

Anyway they were a man short so I was asked tae play right wing, wisnae that good, average at best but had a good burst of speed.

Near the end of the game the ball broke down the right and I tore after it right in on goal, with all the oul men on Castlehill Brae cheering me on, and cracked a shot intae the bottom corner, truth be told my legs were too sore tae lift it over the goalie.

The big goalie got down tae it and pushed it round the post, cue for the oul men tae give him lots of abuse such as, “away ye go ya big mug you should have let the wee bhoy score” etc.

That “big mug” abut 10 year later would play in an EC Final.

  21. For me

Emilio Izzaguire was signed the 2nd time as back up, and duchess don’t let us down – pass

Filip Benkovic, another, setting aside his injury was a pass, would most certainly have taken him on a permanent basis

For me it still all just background noise at present, when oh when are we going to get confirmation of next season’s new management team? And whats the reason for the delay – so that we minimise our chances of qualifying for the Champions League – again! Sevco will be gearing up for the CL Qualifiers now – and we don’t even know who will be in the squad or who our manager will be. If it does become another failed European Campaign – because of a lack of time to prepare for what is usually some of our most important games of the season – at least we will all be able to say we seen it coming – some consolation prize!

  27. Some some earlier posts asking about the Hayburn five. The hearing at the SFA was on Thursday- the verdict will passed down on Monday – as someone suggested – maybe after a wee check on Tav and Jack’s fitness levels!

So six weeks for the hearing and a delayed verdict, quite irregular.

  28. Just watched bits of the England vs Wales Under 18 tie onn You Tube.

Wee Karamoko played the first half and did ok but I was very impressed with the England keepr who played the second half, Tobi Oluyawemi, who made several good saves. I did not know he was one of ours, having left Spurs to come here.

He’s maybe too young to dislodge a senior keeper but with Conor Hazard getting game time with Norn Ireland, we need to get these two young keepers playing regularly.

If our Colts team do not get enough games next season, we will continue to lose a lot of promising players

  29. This season has been awful and the club has been found wanting. The response needed is a good manager and 5 or so first teamers who can come in and make a difference. The big cull at celtic park is on, but with that comes opportunity to rebuild. Folk writing off next season is the hight of hysteria driven SMSM propaganda and bullshite.

Ps brown had a great celtic career but he will not be missed on the pitch as je aged so to did his performances. When one leader goes another will often step up, I would prefer 11 leaders rather than 1 anyway.

  30. Update – silence from the SFA so far on the Sevco Covid crew – now seven weeks since it happened and days after the actual hearing.

  31. DMcK will not bring any new money to the table…fact!

Last year our accounts showed that we had revenue of £70m with expenses of £86m in a season with full match day income except for four home games in the curtailed season.

The deficit was offset by player sales and we returned a small profit of £100k.

This season the squad was kept in tact and players added. This season we have had no crowds & no extra match day income.

I would imagine that our revenue will be below £60m. If our expenses have remained the same (£86m) – then we could be looking at a loss of £26 million. This will be offset somewhat by our bank balance of £18m at the start of this season. That still leaves us £8m into our bank facility of £13m, i.e. £8m in debt, with £5m available.

Assuming that there will be no capacity crowds next season – where will the money come from to bring in a ‘marquee’ management team & new players – bearing in mind we are a debt-averse club?

Maybe Eduard, Ajer & Christie might fetch in some cash – but the likes of Barkas, Bolingoli, Ajeti, Klimala & Ntcham are liabilities, not assets.

DMcK has a very tough task on his plate.
