Having Scott Brown in your corner

395

Over the weekend, Erik Sviatchenko spoke about Scott Brown as Celtic’s “fine minister” as the captain had authority to fine players who broke discipline.  In Erik’s instance, it was lateness.  Scott Brown has been Celtic’s first line of discipline since Neil Lennon’s first period in charge.  Young players were led by example, as more experienced players were given clear guidance of what was expected from them as a Celtic player.

Reprimanding a player for hitching a ride on a buggy intended for an injured colleague, as I once witnessed, requires oceans of respect from players and coaches alike.  This takes pressure off the manager, who can ration his use of discipline for more select matters, when its rarity has more effect.

Controlling a squad of several dozen well-paid athletes is a challenge when results are not going your way and there are campaigns against the manager.  Players cultivate all the wrong feelings when reading social media and pester their agents.  At these times, the manager’s voice can lose effect.  Scott Brown could not prevent our collapse this season but you do not need to think too hard to figure how heavily Neil Lennon and John Kennedy have relied on him.  Not that you will hear any of this from Scott.  I would have him in my corner before anyone else in football.

You have that the nail on the head. There is no realistic equation, or any way forward.

  2. Jack Charlton night on BBC2 tonight.

Look out for ‘Finding Jack Charlton’ if not now then later.

On Holy Week too, appropriate in that the man should be declared a Saint.

Or a Latter Day Celtic Manager

  3. Keano was a top player, leader and captain of the Manchester United team which dominated English Football, He finished his career with Celtic and retired due to Injury. Never playing again.

He managed a few places without massive success and then has been assisting Martin O;Neill in many jobs.

The Roy Keane we get would be a different Roy Keane from when he left.

He will sell the ground out and give us a fresh start. Now I think even Pep would not get a performance out of this disgruntled squad. They have shown their lack of loyalty to the club and felt let down by the club about money. Lenny, Kennedy and Brown couldn’t drive a performance from them.

We need to sell anyone we can and give the money to the new manager to build a team. Eddy, Christie, Ajer, Julien, N’tcham, Mcgregor,Barkas, Ajeti. Sell or free Griff, Biton, Rogic for whatever, they have no place in our future. No place for Duffy, Laxalt, Kenny, Elynoussi.

Agreed so many challenges over the summer, New CEO, New Structure, New management Personnel, New Captain, New players, that’s a lot of people, systems which have to gel, get an understanding, be operational quickly, will the Celtic support be patient and give it all time, if Sevco hit the ground running again early next season, the pressures will be enormous, it will be a tumultuous summer

*don’t forget the summers of 87 and 97, same circumstances but worked out fine.

  5. From what I hear and it is just that, what I hear.

No decision has been made on who will be offered the manager’s job.

On a personal level, I cannot see Roy Keane being offered the job. Could it be the mentioning of Roy Keane is helping him by saying is available for a job and or by putting pressure on the person we are trying to land.

Roy Keane will not sell STs in my opinion, we need to try and appoint someone that can.

I am not disputing what people have been told and I am not saying he won’t be, personally though I don’t think he will.

I don’t have any clue as to who it will be.

Just jumped on to put my tuppence in.

    Until we meet again…

    Keep the Faith!

    Hail Hail!

Kenny was great for us but I was referring to his later choices – wasn’t he an ambassador or the like for oldclub

*think he worked for the rag and bone man not deidco, can’t recall him with any of their clobber on.

  8. Watched Seaspiracy on Netflix this evening.

It would, or perhaps should, change many people’s fishing purchasing habits.

  9. Record goalscorer Sergio Aguero will leave Manchester City at the end of the season, the club has announced.

*Hmmm wonder if Fergal O’Hanlon Harkins will bring him with him, far better striker than the biter.

Time will tell, IMO there are more and greater hurdles this summer, than the summers you have referenced

Action required now, the time required to assess the present squad is being squeezed

Given that 75% of the support do not want Keane I don’t get where your assertion that he’ll sell out the stadium comes from.

The Celtic support, or the majority of the support, have moved past the “Celtic man” crap and want a modern and progressive manager at the helm who’ll move the club forward and use every ounce of technology, science, psychology and knowledge at their disposal.

but there is a lot of knowhow going we know that for sure.at least a new managet can put his man in instead of meeting criticism on how come he needs our trophy laiden captain.😊 etc etc.

Did Kojo have a -16 handicap awaiting glory at the next CQN golf outing?

  16. Weird place this:

Players like Elhamed, Jullien, Laxalt and others judged as not up to the mark (IMO all vg players)

Despite ad nauseum political bile, dirges and personal insults about under-bridge sleepers, unionists, tory barstewards, fascists et al, others taking offence because some mention religious affiliation/terminology.

And when the biggest footballing name/brand (Roy the boy) ever linked with our gaffer’s job, there’s a vicious backlash that disproves the we’re the ‘greatest fans in the world’ claim. Roy is global brand ambassador material. I said it before, I think Roy’s mental, yet Keane and Duff would not be a bad deal for us at all.

My only fear is how long before Roy brings the game into disrepute for calling it straight on the cheating conspiracy – decisions, Govt, refs etc – that is scoddish football ? HH

It would not surprise me if, prior to interview, Keane is asked to sign a non-disclosure agreement, then advised that part of his contract is to stay silent in the face of all the issues you outlined.

nowt to fear but fear itself.but sh*** it in the meantime 😊

i often think we are ‘feart’ of something we imagine.sometimes i look at player critiques and ask what game they watchin at times 😊they also want answers yesterday.patience cannae be waited on.

just now its speculation central wi papers and bookies makin money.i rhink we may need bit of patience as itll move once Dmk comes in.

  20. INIQUITOUSIV – very possibly, but Roy’s temper when riled would likely over-rule any chit he’d scribbled months prior. I’m not backing him as the best strategic player/team manager available – neither is Gerrard. But with the right backroom team… the Celtic job is big job for a big man, otherwise we’d be interviewing more of the Ian Cathros of the gemme.

AN TEARMANN – yep, for some the Lemonheads sang: ‘Patience is like bread I say – I ran out of that yesterday.’

Any idea what the delay is when within a couple of weeks or so, Aberdeen were able to put a new coaching team in place?

With every week that passes, Sevco’s odds for next season gets shorter in my opinion.

  23. AN TEARMANN on 29TH MARCH 2021 11:25 PM

It’s interesting that nobody says “Let’s have Howe but as long as he brings assistant x with him”

Nobody said “It’s great Rodgers is coming but let’s hope he’s bringing assistant y”

It would seem that even those who are beginning to get sold on the idea of Keane don’t trust him to do the job without some competent people around him. Doesn’t that ring alarm bells?

If he needs Duff to do the work, why not just go with Duff but let him pick his own coaching staff – fresh ideas without the baggage and confrontation? Same with Nicky Butt.

As I said previously, Paul Lambert has a better CV.

Other than being Irish, a great player and good value as a pundit I see absolutely no reason for us to employ Keane – and they’re not even good reasons.

As you say hope springs eternal no doubt there are candidates out there who could do the job at paradise ! are the people in place at Celtic FC to get them to paradise ?

Agreed. We make Howe an offer. If he says yes, brilliant.

If he stalls while he weighs up options in England (as I suspect to be the case), we move on.

We don’t have time to waste on people who don’t really want to be here.

  26. Quick question – have seen a couple of posts asking why we don’t have new signings ready and, also, that we have received bids for players e.g 8 million for Ajer from Newcastle.

Has the transfer window been abolished?

I thought it was illegal to tap up players during the season.

  27. Time for a change of debate while we wait on white smoke

If you could invite 3 famous people to a dinner party, dead or alive, who would it be?

Billy Connolly, Nelson Mandela, and Joan Baez

  28. DENIABHOY

It was me who posted the Newcastle offer of £8m for Ajer.

It was a headline on the back page of the Mail on Sunday.

I didn’t read the article, so good point about the tapping up players.

Instead of our board making a complaint they will look at that as a platform for negotiation.

  29. I am available for the Celtic manager’s job, just putting it out there. Well if Thierry Henry can do it why not me?

  30. PHILBHOY on 30TH MARCH 2021 8:46 AM

Yeah, the Ajer story has been floating about. I’d take it with a pinch of salt as Newcastle don’t even know what division they’ll be playing in.
