HOOPS STRIKER AGREES DEAL BEFORE SWITCH

CELTIC’S Republic of Ireland Under-21 international striker Jonathan Afolabi has extended his Hoops contract until June 2023.

The exciting 20-year-old prospect agreed the deal only hours before accepting a season-long loan switch to Championship outfit Dundee, as CQN reported yesterday.

Afolabi joined the champions last summer after knocking back a fresh proposal from Southampton to try his luck in Scotland.

Neil Lennon was excited by the early showing of the powerful youngster who showed promise and potential. He was allowed to move to Dunfermline on a temporary transfer to get game time at East End Park.

A hamstring injury on international duty set him back and the coronavirus pandemic lockdown halted his progress at the Fifers after he had claimed two goals in six appearances.

The Tayside outfit hope Afolabi can spearhead their promotion bid this season and they are second favourites to return to the top flight behind Hearts who dropped out last term.

There will be an intriguing meeting between the sides at Tynecastle on October 16 when the Hoops kid will go face to face with his former team-mate Craig Gordon who returned to the Edinburgh side at the end of his Parkhead deal after six years at Scotland’s title kings.
