Hottest ticket in management lurches in the wrong direction

831

Right now our former captain, Paul Lambert, is one of the hottest tickets in football management so it’s no surprised that Norwich City have been unable to hold onto him.  Inside three years he transformed the club from one that lost 1-7 to Colchester United (then managed by Paul) to one of the most improved teams in Europe, earning two consecutive promotions and a mid-table finish in the FA Premier League.

If Lambert ended up at Liverpool, or even Chelsea, you would not have been surprised.  Instead, he’s set to go to Aston Villa.  During their Martin O’Neill era Villa splurged cash they ultimately realised they couldn’t afford.  Martin walked out days before the start of the season in August 2010.  Since then they pitched Gerard Houllier at the job before poaching Alex McLeish from relegated city rivals Birmingham.

In short, Villa looks like a club without the vision to build stable progress.  Unlike Norwich, who seem to know exactly what they are doing.  They even coped with the loss of Neil Doncaster, who left the club a few months before the arrival of Lambert.

Norwich City is the better job.

I’m on Radio Scotland with Jim Spence around 16:15 today, talking about social media and football, square sliced, the price of milk and lawn care.

    and all

    Re: “BBC’s “Stadiums of Hate”

First of all. I have found this yesterday. It’s very fair opinion.

A TOTTENHAM FAN IN POLAND’S TAKE ON EURO 2012’S RACISM ROW.

I can’t comment on life in the Ukraine, I’ve only been to Lviv on a four day trip, but I am a lifelong Tottenham supporter who has been living in Poland since 2002; working as an English conversational teacher and in my experience during this time – hand on heart – the vast majority of Polish people are nothing like the cretins you saw in those clips.

The Panorama documentary shocked me, not so much the sight of rival Polish thugs displaying their anti-Semitic and racist banners, or their tendency for violence, depressing though it was …but the fact that the BBC could show such a one-sided piece, and pass it off as a some sort of public information warning, a message that this hell is in store for visiting fans of all nationalities when they visit Poland next week.

Equally shocking was the reaction after transmission, on Twitter and the bloggersphere, from a lot of people, most of who have never been to Poland, who actually believed this message, and now think the majority of Polish people are like that!

I’ve been to club and international matches across the country and personally not witnessed any violence, but I’m not denying it exists.

I don’t know what it is about the English media, but they really love trying to put you off going to these kinds of tournaments.

Before Germany 2006, we had speculation that “ultras” from Italy, Poland, England and Germany would all meet up and that there would be riots every day. And what happened? Fans had a good time.

Before South Africa 2012, we were told don’t go, you’ll get mugged, raped, murdered. And what happened? Fans had a good time.

Let me make it quite clear I have no qualms about the footage shown on Panorama, it was genuine and very sad to see. However the producers failed to present a more balanced picture.

Yes there is that kind of behaviour at some games in Poland, but it’s certainly not at all of them and always trouble from a very vocal and aggressive minority, plus it’s at club level, usually at derby matches in major cities like Lodz and Krakow. It doesn’t happen at European or

international games, the neanderthals don’t go anywhere near those matches, they are well policed and they pass off peacefully.

The problem at club level is primarily lack of infrastructure, plus old rundown stadiums, poor security organisation from top to bottom, there’s no cameras at most Polish league stadiums, weak punishment for offenders so they keep coming back, no club membership schemes, you get the picture.

Having said all that, here’s what you didn’t see on BBC1 on Monday.

Panorama didn’t show the Polish fans respectfully cheering the visiting Cameroon team as they beat Poland 3-0 in Aug 2010, and the standing ovation Samuel Eto’o got when he left the pitch having put on a fantastic display and scored two of the goals.

Panorama didn’t show the Polish fans clapping respectfully during Germany’s national anthem, when they visited Gdansk last September.

Panorama didn’t report that in the last five years teams like Barcelona, Fulham, Werder Bremen and Spurs have played in Poland and there were no reports of violence in or around the stadiums. In 2008 my beloved Spurs played away against Wisla Krakow in the UEFA Cup, quite a few of my friends came over for the game, there was no trouble, no racist or anti-Semitic chanting, and we all had an enjoyable few days.

While Poland’s citizens are predominantly white, there are plenty of black students, workers, tourists, enjoying life in Poland’s major cities. If you believe Sol Campbell’s unhelpful and thoughtless soundbites, how is this possible? Why aren’t they all dead or being chased out of the country?

Yes I’m white, so you may say, “ah well your experience will be a different one” but I’ve had black and Asian friends come over to Poland, I’ve shown them the sights, taken them to pubs, and they’ve had a great time. In the town where I live, Krosno (pop. 50,000), in the southeast of Poland, we have mixed race students and teachers from the USA and across Europe, including Turkish, Greeks and Portuguese here on an exchange program. Their contracts run for around nine months and I’ve not witnessed, or heard of, any racist-related problems during their stay.

There’s no denying Poland still has a lot to do to combat the morons who do go to club games, it has to go through the same painstaking process, the same vast financial investment, changes in security and stadium infrastructure, every step by step that England went through after the dreadful Heysel disaster. It will take time, money and political will, but progress is being made.

From time to time I visit a Polish website about racism and anti Semitism in Poland, Nigdy Wiecej (Never Again), the owner of the site was featured on the Panorama programme.

On his site he’s linked this English article on racist fans in Poland and Ukraine, written by the UK based Hope Not Hate.

It’s equally startling, and again mostly highlighting the negatives, but it’s a more balanced article than the programme you saw, I hope you take the time to read it.

    http://www.nigdywiecej.org/images/czytelnia/ang/Hope_not_Hate.pdf

Also can I also recommend Michal Zachodny’s article which The Independent posted yesterday, giving you a Polish perspective.

    http://blogs.independent.co.uk/2012/05/31/panorama-stadiums-of-hate-a-polish-fans-response-from-the-stands/

In conclusion, if you are coming to Poland next week, enjoy the wonderful Polish scenery and hospitality, while it’s always possible the rats will try and poke their heads out of their holes, I have full confidence that the Polish security forces will keep them well away from the festival of football, a festival which I sincerely hope you will enjoy!

    …………………………………..

    Now few words from me.

Yesterday I spent two hours on reading the blogs, comments made by the foreign journalists who live here and comments from ordinary foreigners.

First of all I don’t want to say that we have no problem with the extremists or the hooligans. I would only like to say that our problems are not bigger (at least not significant bigger) than those that you have in UK or in France.

My problem biggest problem with that film is that it does not show full picture of Poland. Can’t speak much about Ukraine.

Yesterday I asked here the question: can somebody do the film about how beautiful is life in Palestine, Baghdad or Kandahar?

I think, if somebody wants to do such film, he can do that. The problem might be the recipients of that film, their knowledge about the places and their believe if the pictures show objective truth?

BBC journalist says – “I’ve spent a month watching league matches across these two countries to find out…”

Truth? Very likely the truth, that he spent month in here. The above suggests that all in his film happened in that month.

I can’t argue with the pictures from “Stadiums of Hate”. They are true but some of those pictures need an explanations. Let me start from Legia Warsaw stuff.

There are pictures from Legia stadium and BBC show banner “White Power” . Watch Legia support and tell me if you can see any racist banners, any offensive signs? Legia clip is a must to understand my later comments. If you don’t want to watch full clip, watch first one minute or so.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2oWExor9OJc&feature=related

Why white power or white legion?

Watched the film? All supporters wear white T-shirts for the games. White power or white legion have nothing to do with Nazis. Ridiculous comment by the BBC. White is tradition and comes from White Legions of Pilsudski (Polish Army). Legia was the army club. Legia name comes from Legion or Legions. Pilsudski and his army were the founders of this club.

If you watched that clip with Legia supporters you hopefully knew why it was White Legion or White Power. Agree? The power is in Legia support. Can this banner offend and suggest Nazi connections? Yes, it can if you don’t know the context.

The truth is that since 2007 this banner is forbidden for the simple reasons. People who don’t know the history or the context they might think that it’s a tribute for Nazis. It’s not, it’s not the truth. I watch Legia for 30 years and have never seen signs of racism. Yesterday I spoke with the journalist from Legia. They were trying to investigate where and when the pictures of “White Power” banner were taken? When it was displayed by Legia support? It was last year when we played against PSV Eindhoven. That banner was kept 10 minutes on and disappeared. The message to the Legia Warsaw owners was : You see, we can do more when on away game. Stupid behavior. As I said, not the racist message.

That journalist from Legia told me that the BBC spent few days in Warsaw, visited Legia and Polonia. They have found nothing when filmed the games. Materials were given by “Never Again”. Legia grafitti? I sometimes see some but have never ever seen Legia racist graffiti. If they were found by “Never Again” and BBC they must be in the city. Sick people (person) who made them.

We have black players who are in the records of my club for many years. Good example is Dickson Choto. Player lives in Poland since 2001, for nine years in my club. He is still here, never claimed about being the victim of the racism. He had many offers from French clubs but stayed here.

Is Poland that fantastic? No, it’s not that fantastic. I read about investigations where the victims of racist abuse were black players. The biggest scandal happened at Korona Kielce few years ago. Couple from their support protested against signing black player from the other Polish club. Those fans were found and banned. Another example is the player from third league team who was racially abused by the supporters of the opposite club. He heard terrible words and was hit in face. That happened 3 or 4 years back. Probably more examples could be given and that is very sad. They happened in a past few years, not in one month.

First stop for BBC was Lodz. It’s true what they shown and the atmosphere there is terrible. That derby game was the best for the BBC to show scandalous scenes. Widzew Lodz were sending LKS to the second division. Both teams have significant number of idiots among them. That film shows graffiti from the walls. That really happens there. The only question is how often you can see those awful graffiti in Lodz? Film suggests it’s normal in that city. I would not say that but I would say again, what we see is awful.

One point regarding Lodz. Film shows banner going up and you can see :Jewish w@@@e. These words are not on the banner, they are on the T-shirt of the idiot.

I would not translate their slogan :who is not jumping, he is a Jew. It rather says: who is not jumping, he is from the Jewish club.

Widzew were founded by the Jews. No excuses, never mind which is the better translation, it’s sick behavior.

Not much more I can tell about Wisla and Cracowia derby and atmosphere there. It’s similar to Lodz.

What I wanted to say, that film shows real pictures but in a whole is cheap journalism.

How professional the BBC journalist is?

Poland borders with Austria . He thinks there is still Yugoslavia.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A33gKM6sISQ&feature=related

I hope this is good summary. Every year we have few hundred visitors (tourists) from UK. After that film Polish Ministry of the Foreign afairs aked British Government again to give the number of British citizens who visited Poland and claimed to be racialy abused (verbaly of fisicaly). Guess what was the number of those racially aboused. The answer from London was: zero.
