Hottest ticket in management lurches in the wrong direction

831

Right now our former captain, Paul Lambert, is one of the hottest tickets in football management so it’s no surprised that Norwich City have been unable to hold onto him.  Inside three years he transformed the club from one that lost 1-7 to Colchester United (then managed by Paul) to one of the most improved teams in Europe, earning two consecutive promotions and a mid-table finish in the FA Premier League.

If Lambert ended up at Liverpool, or even Chelsea, you would not have been surprised.  Instead, he’s set to go to Aston Villa.  During their Martin O’Neill era Villa splurged cash they ultimately realised they couldn’t afford.  Martin walked out days before the start of the season in August 2010.  Since then they pitched Gerard Houllier at the job before poaching Alex McLeish from relegated city rivals Birmingham.

In short, Villa looks like a club without the vision to build stable progress.  Unlike Norwich, who seem to know exactly what they are doing.  They even coped with the loss of Neil Doncaster, who left the club a few months before the arrival of Lambert.

Norwich City is the better job.

I’m on Radio Scotland with Jim Spence around 16:15 today, talking about social media and football, square sliced, the price of milk and lawn care.

  1. My Dear Kojo….

Glad to hear of your literary ambitions…

But you’d better be getting on with it…

Afore Scranton makes demands on your time…

I understand that Lambert was on a rolling one-year contract,so the compo due to Norwich would be around one year’s salary= circa £1M…

Mark McGhee gained a bad reputation for walking away from a club…was it Norwich to Leicester?…cannot quite recall..

But his career never really recovered..

I was very disappointed when Mowbray was given the Celtic job, ahead of Mark..

I think he could have been a highly successful Celtic manager…and in it for the duration…

He was a really excellent striker, who should have been signed by Celtic much earlier. In his career….he had trials for Celtic, before he made his name at Morton, but they spurned the opportunity to sign him…Another one who got away..initially at least..

I very rarely bother to watch any EPL matches live…any even with Match of tthe day recorded highlights..I am selective in which matches I watch..

I have fast-forward when it came to the A.villa games…so I couldn’t tell you how dire they have been recently……

Still ,very pleasurable to see Big ‘Eck getting his Jotters….

    In fact….Happy As Larry….

That sketch was on a hogmany edition of scotch and wry probably late 70s or early 80s. Rickie Fulton played the huns manager, Gregor Fisher the hun scout and Gerard Kelly the promising catholic footballer. Did’t understand it at the time , the ingnorance of youth.

  5. One of the funniest lines I’ve heard this week…

    from a post on RTC

“New Ranjurs in the SPL next season is about as acceptable as Davie Dodds’s coupon in High Definition.”

    I laughed, anyway

I remember that S&W sketch with Kelly as the player

The one I was thinking about was a different one … It was defo Tony Ropermaybe it was just a job application not as a player …

I remember it because later that year I played in a Wildcat fitba team down at Cartha and Roper and Dave Anderson were in the team … I reminded him about the sketch and he said it took About 20 takes because everyone was p@shing themselves so much on the set

He’s a funny guy but no a very good fitba player had to save his ass a few times :)

It is only in The UKplc that ‘friendlies’ are dismissed as meaningless. The results are important in computing the coefficient which in turn goes towards the rankings which in turn determine who you come up against in the early stages of international competitions. Only sayin’,like.
