How administrators can avoid redundancies short-term

1072

There have been many questions about the unusual circumstance in football of Rangers going into administration but not making any players redundant.  It is possible, and not totally uncommon, for directors of a company in administration to arbitrarily choose to provide funds from their own resources to pay any chosen creditor, including staff. In football, players’ contracts of employment need to be with the club, but the source of payment can come from anywhere.

In this instance, Rangers Group, the club’s holding company, or any other body or person, could be in sufficient funds to provide the administrators with enough money to not only pay players, but to continue operating in a relatively normal state.  Rangers’ administrators have already suggested Craig Whyte has guaranteed to make-good wages due to be paid this week, although it was not made clear which entity would be paying, or the source of such funds.

Administrators will only be forced into player redundancies if they do not have sufficient funds available to see them through to the timely conclusion of negotiations with creditors, or if they are unable to receive binding undertakings from another source that they will step forward to pay players next month.

Various sources over the weekend suggested HM Revenue and Customs were prepared to extend generous time to pay terms to Rangers.  This club is owned by Craig Whyte.  While we all know what a stand-up guy Craig is, how likely to you think HMRC are to believe he will stick to a plan stretching out years into the future?  It’s just not going to happen.

I hear a ‘We’ll take a few years to pay too’ campaign is set to trickle through the SPL if HMRC agree to this one.  Better using the tax man as a bank than using an actual bank.

    Really interesting post

Why did they turn out different?

IMO, the political dynamics on both countries were completely different. Sectarianism was institutionalised in NI to an extent far in excess of the “clubbish” sectarianism in Scotland. NI was formed – artificially and undemocratically – as a result of a war, with a clear purpose of installing one political/pseudo-religious class above another. The sectarianism was overt, clear, and had a clear objective of political control.

In Scotland, its nature was different – it was covert, subversive; jobs for the boys etc. Scotland never had the political class because it was part of a much larger entity. In addition, your point re unions and the labour movement are pertinent. The need for social reform was a priority far ahead of the religious divide for most of the working class – I would argue. Thats not to argue that sectarianism wasn’t an issue, we all know it was, and is.

I have heard many stories over the years, guys going to jail supporters of the dark side emerging as Celtic supporters and the like.

I have yet to hear of the story reversed, tells a story does that.

  13. No tweets or rumours tonight? This is like the morning after the big party. Folk are sobering up and chuckling at the night before. Meanwhile the subject of all the laughs at the party is away re writing history.

Celtic cheated the tax man, financially doped and lots of important Gers agree with me so says a guy on Radio Clyde. Hahahahaha. Robert Kelly came home from South America with a suitcase full of cash! Don’t say anymore Bill Leckie will be writing this down.

Rangers didnt cheat the tax man or break the law, they got duff advice from an accountancy expert. Oh well ok then theres your ten points back and we shall step in the tardess and go back to times of yore when thon ice cream and jelly wasn’t sectarian.

My thoughts are that Maggie was only interested in the money.

JN butchered the navy and this did not go UN-noticed in Argentina.

They had tried twice in the late 70’s to stoke up the pressure.

One attempt was stopped when the Spanish Navy was given the rumour that JC had sent a nuclear powered sub to the South Atlantic. Chinese whispers, he passed on the story that nuclear armed sub was sitting in the River Plate with orders to start pressing buttons if the islands were attacked.

    Things calmed down after that.

No matter what her fans say, Maggie lost the Falklnds.

It was the Navy and the posh non NATO parts of the Army that won them back.

  15. Gents

    Re Thatcher;

I read a very enlightening piece the other day. It contradicted my previous, and apparently commonly held, belief that Thatcher was keen on taking back the Falklands for reasons of re election on a tide of jingoistic triumphalism.

Apparently it was not quite as clever as that, but no less disgraceful. It was stated that just before the invasion, the British had almost completed a deal for “leasing” back the islands to Argentina. Frankly, the issue was a minor one and nobody gave a monkeys one way or another. 99% of the population had never heard of the place.

A major ball dropping episode then ensued. Govt was wrapped up in numerous Thatcher induced domestic issues. One of which was massive cuts in defence spending.

The Argentinian regime spotted an opportunity to take the islands permanently. They invaded.

At this point, because of Thatcher’s weakening of the defence buget, there were only 2 choices. Resign or go to war. So, not a calculated attempt to win votes but a calculated attempt to salvage her political career.

Basically, she took Britain to war, to fight over some insignificant islands they were about to give away anyway, in order to save her neck.

Just a fabulous reason for all those young men to die.

Maggie. Wasn’t she just super. How could all you ingrates (Philvis aside) fail to appreciate her magnificence.

I considered it was an interesting perspective. Just thought I’d share.

    Cheers
