How to win friends and influence referee careers

875

The job of referee has a kind of inverse relationship between popularity and career progress.  Willie Collum has been at the centre of this season’s three major controversies.  He was referee on two occasions when his assistants failed to notice Celtic conceded a goal in crucial league games against Rangers and Hearts (on each occasion the ball crossed the line by inches and remained there for a small fraction of a second).

There is very little a ref can do when his assistant doesn’t flag when the ball crosses the goal line, as we all know, but Collum still suffered reputational damage from some who simply blamed him for being in charge when ‘goals’ against Celtic were not awarded by assistant referees.

It takes a brave decision for a ref to award an injury time penalty for a team losing by a goal in a cup final.  As we noted yesterday, Anthony Stokes clearly had his ankle clipped when clean through with Cammy Bell to beat on Sunday while the Kilmarnock defender never came close to the ball.  This was a foul any day of the week, but having been in charge when Celtic benefited from assistant referee decisions, Collum booked Stokes instead of awarding a penalty.

This incident was almost identical to Collum’s decision not to award Celtic a penalty in the infamous game away to Hamilton Accies in 2011.  With five minutes of the game remaining Niall McGinn was tripped inside the box but Collum booked the player.

The offside rule was subject to a new and unique interpretation that day.  Hamilton ‘scored’ from a set piece with a player alone inside the six yard box who jumped over the ball.  He was in an offside position by several yards and stood in front of Fraser Forster before allowing the ball to pass under him.  Collum also sent off James Forrest for blocking a clearance in an incident which caused a Hamilton player to kick his boot.

All of this followed the infamous incident at Celtic Park when despite looking the other way, Collum awarded Rangers a penalty when Kirk Broadfoot stumbled in the vicinity of Daniel Majstorovic.

Without enjoying the light of robust critical analysis of refereeing decisions that happens in most other countries I’m not sure where we go with any of this.  Celtic Quick News called both ‘goal’ incidents against Rangers and Hearts as assistant referee mistakes so it is only appropriate we record Mr Collum’s significant mistakes when refereeing Celtic, while we ponder the formula for career progression among Scotland’s referees.

I know we covered the issue of Duff and Phelps needing to talk-up any possibility of nullifying Ticketus ownership of future season tickets, Craig Whyte’s security over Ibrox of HMRC being prepared to accept a few pennies in the pound (before HMRC issued a rare statement about the important of paying your tax, “football club or not”), so apologies for repeating myself, but….

Duff and Phelps have agreed no deal with HMRC.  Ticketus retain ownership of future season tickets and the recent court challenge appears to offer little threat, while Craig Whyte retains his security.  In addition, Duff and Phelps have received no offer for Rangers with terms which are within their control.

So, apart from having no offers they can accept, no stadium to sell, no control over future season ticket sales, no agreement with HMRC and having absolutely no idea what they will do when player contracts revert to their full value on 1 June, Duff and Phelps job is pretty easy.

Right now they need to keep all their plates in the air. The very least we should do is cut them some slack as they endeavour to work the angles.

    WOOOOF

I was logging off and then I saw that you had posted and through one eye read and through a drunken fug see I was reading one of the best posts ever on this great site. Thank you and Paul67 and everyone but I hope the rest of the churnalists actually sit up now and see that they cannot carry on churning out the same old guff as not only is the old football media dead but journalism in this country is dead and I do not just mean football. That post summed up entirely what has been going on in this country as far as I can remember and it can not continue.

Do not want to praise anyone to much but thank you and maybe certain journalists from outwith these borders should wake up to what a story they have.

    Superb summary.

Who do we have, Eric Riley who despite being a long term employee I believe would require to be instructed in how Celtic should vote,as his original allegiences were elsewhere.

The inclusion now of PL should help a bit.

Not that you need my advice but your piece and that of Brogan etc.tells the entire story, why not establish a list of media contacts external to Scotland and ensure they are copied directly, such as Barclay,McCarra,McNally, etc in off chance they may not be as thorough when scrutinising blogs and miss excellent summaries such as yours.

I think you get the idea and apologies if already in the process.

  3. James cracking piece matey.

They are corrupt plain and simples, the SFA will do what they please to save the Huns, sky deal anyone lol.

They cheated and the media want the rules bent to save their jobs, its astonishing.

I have already said, the SFA/SPL will dilly dally until after split so the Huns can’t be relegated, ie after top 6 decided they can’t go further down table.

This country is a total joke and the people running our game are there to help 1 team amd 1 team only.

We just have to mention Jim Farry and George Peat, enough said.

Then we have the referees, head of referees, Hugh Dallas, Dougie Dougie, Mike McCurry, Willie Collum etc etc.

I have still not heard 1 Hun apologise for their cheating, if they have any decency left then they would be chapping there clubs door down demanding they be demoted and maybe then we could say at least they’re trying to learn from past mistakes.

I’m just glad we have site like CQN, RTC, Phil etc etc.

  4. Siege mentality.

    There will be no apologies.

    We were the people.

But really we just like the golf now.

No your not missing anything, he’s a cheat, if Huns were down 1-0 in cup that decision would’ve been given.

This man was no were near our games and now all of a sudden he’s back refereeing big games for us.

I am glad Celtic put in a complaint about him because I don’t want this man anywhere near our games.

All we ask for is fair refereeing is that to much to ask, we know they are only human they will make mistakes but as Neil said it’s the big decisions they need to get right.

Mr Conroy makes a mistake and gets demoted when he failed to spot Aluko dive so why can’t Collum get punished.

The next referee to keep an eye on will be Stephen McLean.

When ra gers are brought to book for all their breaches of the rules.

Which they will be with you and paul67,RTC,Phil mac,all shinning a light on every trick and diversion they try to muddy the waters.

This IMHO is the biggest scandal in world football right here in Scotland.

The whole thing would not have been possible without the help of the msm as they were used to provide contradicting story’s to cause confusion.

They were then help by the sfa who even now refuse to act because the head of the sfa was at the centre of the ra gers administration .

And as I pointed out earlier the spl will have to make a choice very soon as all the evidence is now all being recorded on radio and tv .

The Internet has brought down governments and will bring down the sfa and ra gers .

  7. Need to go and crash now but wonder if anyone could look at the circulation of the printed press media in Scotland the past few weeks as we do not buy it and they are just making up nice stories for the huns who only the simpletons (who can read) among are buying now. Right off to bed.

    HAIL HAIL

  8. Lads remember we as fans hold the key to bringing the other SPL clubs down if they choose the wrong option regarding Huns.

    Goodnight and God Bless.

    Thanks for your comments guys.

Brogan Rogan, your own pieces today have been incredible mate.

I just tweeted Stewart Regan to ask him if his letter to all clubs amounts to an offer of amnesty in exchange for disclosure. I’d ask that everyone with a twitter account does the same, until we get a definitive answer.

Every effort will be made to find a way out of this for Rangers. It can’t be allowed.

Just watched the Channel 4 article on the huns:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cuJdifESaP8&feature=youtu.be

Contrary to some, I thought its tone quite damning, particularly the opening lines of Tax, VAT, etc being a ‘lifestyle choice’ to the Huns.

I think, and hope, Alex Thomson will dig further into their pit of corruption. Regan squirmed like a naughty little fishy caught on a boatman’s hook (lonesome?).

The question he needs delivered right into his lilly-livered countenance is simply ‘Who’s idea was it to write to innocent member clubs regards extra payments to staff when the biggest criminals of all are writhing around in embarrassment in the public eye right now – yours or Campbell Ogilvie’s?”

That aside, some of the comments under the Youtube clip are gems. Hurting Huns, lol.

  11. Today I was at the dentist.

    It didn’t go well.

The root treatment turned into anextraction, that then went wrong.

Couldn’t get it all, surgery now on Thursday.

If I am hard on anyone onThursday, well think about the hordes and their offspring.

  12. cqn et al

if Stewart regan is asking all clubs about payments and only ra gers are caught bang to rights, this all stinks of buying them more time to escape punishment.we know and he knows they have broke the rules and he starts another enquiry before charging the ra gers for breaches of the rules .also the spl are already investigating undisclosed payments.murray and ogilvie have already stated that the ebt payments were not submitted to the msm.

So why start asking other clubs ?

As an advocate of Truth and Reconciliation I think you have misunderstood the nature of the true process going from how you describe it.

What you describe is not Truth. The truth would be that the wrongdoer recognises in their heart that what they had done was wrong, not from fear of punishment, but from a moral awakening – a metanoia.

Apologies to avoid punishment would be to avoid the truth of the wrong doing and without that truth being owned by the wrongdoer, then the conditions for true reconciliation would not exist.

It was precisely because these conditions do not exist that the Catholic Church, whilst interested in the concept of T&R, saw no point (rightly) in pursuing that approach not that very long ago in respect of an alternative to the Offensive Behaviour Bill.

The $64M question for the advocates of truth forgiveness and reconciliation is how do you get the process underway when the wrong doer stubbornly refuses to recognise the moral vacuum in which they operate?

It is a question I have raised with the guy who wrote the manual and the guy who was interested in what it said.

    No answers as yet.

  14. Is there a time scale when administration stops? Or can duff and co keep going and going?

Rfc have no income, whyte owns them, does not matter if 1pence or 100m he bought them for, he wants paid if he wants to sell

    And HMRC are owed squillions

Can HMRC say ” enough of this farce” and kill them off?

I had the same thought on the start and when I saw the follow up item on tax avoidance I thought the juxtaposition of both exteremely elegant in driving home the point of tax avoidance to hard pressed tax payers darn sarf.

They will not see Rangers as the helpless victims of forces but as thievin bassas who should pay up or (be) shut up.

The idea that they could just walk away from a huge UK tax bill with no political consequences always struck me as naive.

All you Tims darn sarf, why not write to your MP expressing anger at what Rangers have done and say that if they have acted illegally you want every penny paid. Get them asking questions in Parliament.

At the moment the administration is caused by unpaid VAT and tax/NI for the last 10 months and the wee bill. It is the recovery of that by HMRC which has put them in administration.

They could emerge from that if a buyer can be found and the club sold to that buyer and administration exited if that buyer could pay the bills. However there might be a big bill still to arrive and until it does the administrators and buyers will be treading water.

  17. Yes the SFA can write to all the clubs they want, I think Queens Park might be a good place to start as their legendry bungs go back decades but this scandal is not for going away.

The more they do nothing the more ridiculous they look.

This is a scandal, this is criminal, this is corruption.

  18. Auldheid thanks I know Most if that

But Who will buy rangers and do they have to pay Craig whyte??

The law would say yes , he must be paid

So if rangers can’t find a buyer, when will hmrc say that’s it?

  19. Great post James Forrest,

Even if we accept Stewart Regan’s version that the SFA can’t conduct diligence into every club director appointment, the system therefore must punish severely when things go wrong. He is another George Peat that will be backed into the corner of resignation by his own actions or lack of actions.

“All the apologising will be done from one group, at one club, and for one purpose; to avoid the consequences which would be coming their way in any other association in the game. “……………

  22. I see “whattaboutery” is afoot in the offices of the SFA this morning.

Which means: RFC are guilty of failing to disclose payments to players to the SFA…

…and the SFA are desperately hoping that someone, somewhere, has committed a minor misdemeanour in the last decade which can be packaged up with the Huns’ criminality and neatly dispatched together…

  23. The Special Report on Channel 4 last night was indeed special as it provided the first hole in the dyke of prevarication and the trickle of truth actually begins to emerge, it’ll become a deluge soon.

The sense of GIRUY I’ve got this morning is truly liberating, but I’ve a fear there’ll be a push to incriminate Celtic for a minor misendeavour along the way to salve their ignominy.

On an entirely different matter, don’t be fooled by today’s rhetoric….

My third article on Rangers story (Rangersgate???) has just gone up on Left Foot Forward a popular left(ish) political blog. It was submitted a couple of days ago so maybe misses a few recent bits-n-bobs (C4news @Alextomo Damn You!!!).
