Huge game amid many distractions

Brendan Rodgers’ comments about Moussa Dembele, “It’s something you have to deal with”, suggests it is likely we will be without him tonight, meaning we go into one of the biggest games of the season without (currently) our best striker.

As it stands right now, it is likely, but not certain, that Moussa will leave this week.  For a start, those delicate muscles would need to pass a fitness test.  One week ago, Celtic expected the player to remain at the club until January, when they believed his value would be no less than it was then.  That possibility remains, and it should be noted, Moussa has behaved professionally.

The situation is far from ideal.  Only yesterday, I wrote about the need to concentrate on the important job to be done tonight.  Under any reasonable circumstances, we should see Suduva out of the competition comfortably, but this is football and we both know anything can happen if one team is even 10% off peak form.

The Europa League is a poor relation to the Champions League but it remains hugely important, not least of all in attracting one or two players, who will want European as well as domestic exposure. I don’t know how motivated the squad are, but they should be at peak preparedness; tonight is significantly the most important game of the week.

One positive is that Leigh Griffiths was made for days like these.  He has the experience and aptitude to lead the line.

Let’s get this job done.

  1. Over on FF they can’t believe the refs don’t give them everything:

“What the heck is going on.. getting absolutely nothing in these European games. Indeed, some of the decisions against us have been shocking.”

  2. Looks to me like hey are still going to get through though, Russians have been useless at finishing despite carving the huns open several times.

  3. Molumbu is a good signing but begs the question why so late?

    He was available pre season.

Another case of our board being reactive to the footballing side?

Shame as they are proactive on the business side.

If only they could manage both.

  4. Friesdorfer- there’s more Irish bars in Villamoura than you can shake a stick at. There’s also a CR7, but I preferred Figo’s next Door down by the harbour. One of them will surely show it. Or a wee trip up to Jinky’s at Albufeira is a shoe in.

Really enjoyed Villamoura. We used it as a scouting trip for Lisbon 2017.

Goodbye Brendan you done us proud.

Celtic fans accepting any old sh**e now.

  8. same old story skint flint celtic any fan that supports these clownsat board level are sick

  9. Watching Ufa v Huns and it’s dire. So the Gerrard Revolution could only beat this mob 1-0 at home and were tied at 1-1 today. Ufa are a poor, poor side who can’t open the defence up against 9 men.

I don’t see much to fear from the Huns; their defence is poor even playing 6 at the back.

that is the second one that has bounced off of McShagger’s post ….the zombies seem to be getting the luck they need to get through today …

while the zombies will no doubt be tired after playing with 9 men, they will likely get a boost from holding out with 2 men short … and, rather incredibly, this will feed into their ‘hard done’ by mentality … add that together, and they will likely be up for the weekend’s game

we have more talent than them for sure, but we are going to have to match them for beleif and hunger to get the desired result….

  13. Fact is they are still unbeaten, even after playing away in Russia with 9 men. They will take an awful lot from today and it is a solid building block. This season isn’t going to be easy, in fact it is going to be a big challenge for everyone at Celtic.

  14. Speculate to accumulate.

See what the zombie club did there?

They invested a few shakles and now they’ll get it all back, plus a little bit of profit.

That’s gambling, and the gamble paid off.

Keep hearing every season about the CEO gambling unnecessarily with regards to CL qualifying – nonsense – it takes you to actually put money down to have a bet – standing in the bookies with your hands in your pockets, watching, hoping, wishing – doesn’t constitute a gamble.

    Not long now for redemption.

Cruised through? Ufa hit the post and had a goal disallowed in injury time alone. A decent team would have done them for 4 or 5 to be honest. Scraped through – yes.

  16. They got a good result in Europe and are decently compact and organized .

They would never of had either sent off in Scotland though both merited.

Flannagan taking lessons from Lafferty it seems.

Have the SFA appealed the cards to EUFA yet?

They will sit comfortably in two banks of four and hit us with fast breaks and long balls.

Our tempo and possession will need to be a lot more positive on Sunday.

  17. That orc squad is going to crumble playing Thursdays and sundays. If Ufa were any sort of team they’d have been pumped oot. As it was they hit the post twice, missed a sitter or two and lost to a Sevco team who are marginally better than last season.

My honest opinion of the orcs is that they are quite lucky but not very good.

Any spfl team can cause us problems on their day including them but not over the whole season.

If we’d have played like they did this evening we’d be in meltdown. I suppose it’s all relative to standards that have been set. The bar for SG isn’t too high.

  18. We’re marching to a faster pace

  19. the russians were a very poor outfit even against thems nine , they over passed at their back line and created some chances but thems are carrying some amount of luck , they celebrated as if they hand won the europa cup .

  20. I wouldn’t be so dismissive of the Huns. Yep the Russians were poor but to play last 50 minutes a man down and last 30 with 2 men down & still not concede is some achievement, playing away in Europe.

It’s something we would talk about for years and it could be huge in bonding a crowd of misfits into a team.

£10M quid just dropped into sevco bank account as well as a massive feel good factor. Compare that with the atmosphere around us at the moment.

  24. This will give them another 3 home ties and the money from that will be useful to them, hence the celebrations.

Like Lenny said – don’t believe the hype

  26. There has been and will be more hype about sevco after this evening. They are limited and nowhere near us in quality. The fact remains though, they’re compact and give little away with their ackward style of play. Worse teams than this sevco team have done a job on us so Sunday should not be taken for granted.
