If this is the acceptable standard, SFA are welcome to it

Our man on the inside, Charlie Green, seems to have upset a few people over the weekend.  Charlie was playing to the gallery with his “bigotry” comment; it is not credible that the 35 clubs who voted against providing Sevco access to an elevated league are demographic significantly different from those of Rangers (1872/3).  Although, there is a good chance that each of those 35 clubs will have a more mixed profile than the former club.

Green is still fending off interest from people with far greater pull with the Rangers (1872/3) support than he has (genuinely hope he succeeds here).  He needs to sell tens of thousands of tickets to prevent his new club slipping into the hands of one of the other consortiums still trying to buy a piece of the action.  I always caution Celtic from playing to the gallery, it delivers short term populism but is surely the alternative to a strategic plan. I am sure several clubs will express their alarm at these comments to the SFA.

Unfortunately, since the SFA failed to take action on either of Ally McCoist’s earlier inflammatory outbursts so they can expect more of the same from Green and others.

Attempts are being made to convince thousands of people a bigoted bogeyman has been out to get them.  99% of the target population will do no more than complain loudly but it’s the unpredictable >1% who exist in every community we should be concerned about.

To the best of my knowledge no Scottish club has ever accused others of bigotry, not even during ‘that’ 80 year period.  If this is the new acceptable standard, the SFA are welcome to it, but it will be better for all if we go elsewhere to play our football.  Our game has been potent for a century but it has now become dangerously unstable.

Let us go now, before this is whipped up any more.  Anyone wanting to hold Scottish football together in its current form has a lot of explaining to do.

  2. Morning all!

Really looking forward to this game tomorrow night. I hear its not televised but hopefully i can come up with something online. Me and Oscar are going to try and watch it on our ‘boys night’ at the hospital! (mummy gets home for a rest)

Great news about Joe Ledley tweeting a picture of himself wearing the #TeamOscar wristband in support of our little fella! He has also handed them out to the rest of the lads so hopefully we’ll see more of them. The demand for them since has been huge!!

Then yesterday morning Neil Lennon tweeted his support for Oscar and put up a link to the blog! Thanks so much Lenny and Joe!! :-)

Check out the last couple of posts on the blog which includes the pic of Joe wearing the wristband and all the other high profile support he has received recently…

  3. Quite a few of the Arsenal blogs seem to be getting very excited about our Victor. £10 Million and a cut of any future transfer fees and they can have him. When you have only played one season and start talking about moving on, your heart is not going to be in it when push comes to shove.

Paddy is a folk hero a mhan of legend – a mhan capable of a brilliant pass and a brilliant run.

Unfortunately the rest of his play is not good enough, he slows the pace of the game too much and does his good stuff way way to infrequently.

Just phoned the Motherwell ticket office re their game tonight, my son has a Greece top and we were thinking of going, staff told me it’s very busy and they could sell out, no talk in MSM that they will get a huge financial boost because of the cheating huns, regardless of the result they will have income that they wouldn’t previously have had, any journo or club should be thinking, hey this could be us next season, it’s a great story for provincial clubs. So will be ignored and we’ll be told how bad things are.

Agree with you that Paddy is no Commons, but think it’s important to focus on what players can do rather than what they can’t. Paddy’s best position is on the attacking left of a 4-2-3-1, a formation which, Samaras aside, the rest of the team is incapable of playing. I also think he was superb alongside Joe Ledley at CM at Fir Park (3-0) last season. His lack of pace wasn’t a disadvantage, and his passing dictated much of the game.

I big up KC as a no.10, but only in an attacking sense. If he had to play the Maloney role (much more all round attack/defence in 4-2-3-1) he’d be well out of his comfort zone. It’s about playing to your strengths and disguising your weaknesses, as a great man once said.

  16. The first thing I do when getting to work or at the weekend is make a coffee & log into CQN to see what is really happening in the world of Scottish Football. I also look at twitter to see whats happening elsewhere in the world.

I have never bought a redtop for years and will not visit their websites to give them their boost on advertising figures.

To me the Scottish MSM should be filed under a new category “Fantasy” as they pander to the intellectually challenged. Anyone who believes the lies & trash they peddle is a fantasist who is to be more pitied than scorned.

If their lies & contempt weren’t so dangerous their product would be laughable.

CHRIS SUTTON is backing Celtic to hold their nerve in Europe and Finnish off HJK Helsinki.

Just as he did 12 years ago when Martin O’Neill’s men were anxiously teetering on the brink of a humiliating UEFA Cup exit.

Strike legend Sutton, now 39, pounced in extra-time with a priceless away strike after HJK amazingly cancelled out the Hoops’ 2-0 lead from Parkhead.

That shattered the Finns who had the scent of arguably their greatest victory.

Sutton claims history will repeat itself with Celtic heading to Helsinki for the deciding game with all still to play for.

But he also confidently predicted the Hoops WILL emerge with a place in the Champions League play-offs.

Neil Lennon’s endured past qualifying woes against Braga, Utrecht and Sion.

However, Sutton, with 44 Euro ties in the Hoops and 16 goals, told SunSport: “No one at Celtic needs reminding how important this qualifier is for the club.

“There’s so much resting on the team making the group stages, especially from a financial point of view.

“And, of course, there’s also massive pressure on Lenny. It would be seen as a disaster by many people if Celtic were knocked out by Helsinki.

“But I don’t think that’s going to happen, although I do feel they will have to complete the job in Finland.

“I reckon they’ll get through — and then, hopefully, they’ll get a break with their opponents in the play-off.

“We made life difficult for ourselves in the game against Helsinki in 2000.

“Henrik Larsson had scored twice in the first leg and we were well placed.

“But in Finland they levelled the aggregate and had us under pressure.

“The next goal was always going to be the important one — and I’m just glad I managed to get it in extra time.

“That settled the tie and it was a relief for all of us. We felt over the two legs we’d done enough to win it.

“But it was a hard-fought victory with the pressure really on.

“It could be tense again for Celtic this time. Helsinki have scored a few goals in beating Reykjavik to get through. They are also well into their season.

“I see them being cautious at Celtic Park and even if they are two down I don’t see them changing their tactics.

“They’ll probably see a 2-0 defeat as still being a good result to take home.

“But I’ve still got to believe Celtic will be too strong. Too much quality.

“Yet, you can’t underestimate these Scandinavian teams. Historically, they often nick results against bigger sides.”

Sutton knows the advantage HJK have of being more battle-hardened with Celtic not kicking off their title defence until this weekend.

But he added: “At the start of every season you know that certain countries in there are going to be halfway through their campaigns.

“It’s not a great situation, but that’s just the way it is and you know for a few months you are up against it.

“Helsinki have been playing competitive games while Celtic have only had warm-up matches.

“They are going to have to hit the ground running — and I don’t think it’s an excuse for Celtic.

“I know Neil certainly won’t use it. Celtic have been playing very good teams in friendlies and been under pressure.

“Ajax and Inter have better quality than Helsinki.

“However, I realise it’s going to be for real — and Celtic must switch on immediately.”

Sutton’s just as gobsmacked as anyone at the state of affairs in our game — disbelieving at newco Gers being refused entry to the SPL and banished to the Third Division.

He said: “With Rangers almost cheating themselves to death it has been a real downer on the Premier League, maybe now other teams can flourish now that Rangers have finally been put in their rightful place”

“It’s not anybody’s fault at Celtic. But now there’s an onus on them to fly the flag for an honest game up there, to keep the season going by trying to get to the Champions League fairly and square and playing against some big sides.”

  28. up_over_goal on 31 July, 2012 at 10:50said:

Paddy actually played the no.10 role that day at Fir Park.

Celtic lined up in a 3-4-1-2 formation with Paddy playing in the space between the midfield and attack.

You’re completely correct he was extremely effective that day and may be an area where he could be utilised this season but not against better opposition.

DORIN GOIAN has insisted he’s staying at Rangers — just days after looking certain to quit.

The Romanian stopper was a surprise starter in Gers’ 2-1 win at Brechin on Sunday.

And despite months of turmoil which have seen shamed Gers demoted to the Third Division and robbed of most of their star names, he has pledged his future to Ally McCoist’s side.

He said: “It is unbelievable what’s happened to Rangers.

“I didn’t think when I came here that a big club — with all its history — could be in this situation.

“But on Sunday, when I saw all our supporters coming to the game to see the team, I am not ashamed to say that I was crying.

“Even with Rangers in the Third Division some of our fans are still behind us and god bless them that is amazing.

“Rangers are more than a football club. I know some people think it’s a different club now because of what happened, but that is not true.

“Without doubt, this is still the same club. It doesn’t matter if they change the name of the company and we can only attract the lower elements, we are still Glasgow Rangers. We are the same club, trust me.

“I played on Sunday and have to admit now there is a maybe a real possibility I will stay here, we will wait and see.

“I suppose it depends on what Charles Green wants. But right now I have not spoken with anyone.

“I have said it before, if a concrete offer comes in for me then I would definitely leave.

“But I have had no offers yet, well none of them interest me. It is hard to comprehend how much my professional reputation has been harmed.

“Right now I am a The Rangers player and happy to be one If I get paid this week.

“I like it here in Glasgow. Staying would not be a problem but me and my family need regular income

“I’ll just need to see if Mr Green wants to have a discussion with me eventually, but until now no one has spoken with me.

  33. Happy 90th birthday Sean. I watched you on occasion as a wee boy but did not realise then the tremendous contribution you would make to our great club. Later I was privileged to see the Lions in full bloom and I am well aware of your influence and contribution to the great success of that team and of Celtic during your time as assistant to and substitute for Big Jock. Saturday will see you raise a flag that we enjoyed flying from our pole for 9 consecutive years (still a record) under you and Jock. There are so many joyful times to recall that it is almost impossible to mention them all. I hope a simple “thank you”, though not a lot of words, along with my sincere best wishes for good health and happiness in the coming years, can be a worthy present on this fabulous occasion.
