Following on from our discussion yesterday about adopting one or two of the techniques the enormously successful GB Olympic cycling team there are other areas where a technical advantage can be sought.
Football is awash with metrics these days. Clubs know things about their players they never even wondered about 10 years ago, leading to more informed decisions. It is probably no exaggeration to suggest that a club like Celtic will have some information on thousands of players. At the top level, much of this information will be fresh in the minds of coaches and scouts, and will easily be recorded on a database, but scouting permeates through youth football. Acquiring and assimilating information on the many hundreds of players on view each month is an information challenge.
The US sports were early to get on top of this problem. SportsBoard is a iPad-based data capture and management app which enables coaches and scouts to record information on players (their own players and others) as they watch the game. Data is uploaded from the iPad to a cloud-based database. Information and comment on each player or opposing team can then easily be analysed.
The alternative would be to scour through unstructured notes without any way of controlling the up-flow of information.
The app has also been used to provide instant metrics to first team squads. Players can get home from training, login and see how their performance was rated that day, allowing them to adjust their own target for the next session. I spoke to the designer, Gregg Jacobs, who has received a ton of media coverage in the US over the last two years. He told me this was about providing “more meaningful feedback”. Take a look at the Assessment and Contact Management features, which has screenshots of the ‘soccer’ app.
So this week we’ve covered orthopaedic pillows on tour and leg heaters from the GB cycling team, as well as a scouting management and instant metrics system from US sports, all low-cost and designed to reduce risk and improve performance.

As long as we keep on producing hidden gems like Wanyama and Hooper, the MSM will keep on making up stories to unsettle them. Their own team might have self-combusted but they will still try to chip away at Celtic any way they can.

…We once went to a Caledonian Society night for ex-pats in South Africa. Kenny played the bagpipes. At end of night someone decided to play British national anthem, myself and several others at our table refused to stand, creating a bit of a cafuffle, with our table walking out, joined by Kenny and his pipes playing – still laugh at that.

CELTIC’S Under-20s came from behind to beat Motherwell 3-1 and move to the top of the Scottish Premier League.
An experienced Motherwell side took the lead early in the first-half from a Kallum Higginbotham penalty but Paul George responded with a sensational top corner strike just after the half hour mark.
Patrik Twardzik then struck a penalty to put his side into the lead with just 11 minutes remaining, before Bahrudin Atajic rounded off proceedings with a solo effort at the end.
Stevie Frail and John Kennedy fielded a strong starting XI which included Rami Gershon and Anthony Stokes in an attempt to increase their match sharpness.
And Celtic started positively with the first opportunity. George played in Paul Slane on eight minutes, but he was too hesitant and his shot was blocked. Lewis Kidd then picked up the rebound, but sent it just past the post.
Despite the good start, though, Motherwell went on to dominate the opening period. Stuart Findlay produced a late challenge on 15 minutes and the referee pointed straight to the spot before booking the Celtic defender.
Higginbotham then stepped up to tale the penalty and stuck it straight down the middle, handing the visitors the lead.
And Motherwell continued to look strong once they had the advantage. Daley charged to the byline on 20 minutes and sent the ball skimming across the face of goal from an acute angle. Luckily for Celtic it went wide of the far post.
Six minutes later Zaine Francis-Angol caused more problems for the Hoops defence, going on a mazy run to the six-yard line, and sending a powerful drive just inches over the bar.
Celtic came back into the match just after the half hour mark and a solo run by George was finished by an outstanding strike. He curled the ball into the top corner of the net from 35-yards out, beating the outstretched Stewart, to draw his side level.
And with the young Hoops back in the game they grew in strength and confidence. George played a good ball into Atajic on 37 minutes, but the striker´s shot was blocked. Lewis Kidd followed up with the rebound but similar to the start of the half, he sent it just past the post.
Celtic were showing good movement, though, and after the break they continued to push for their second of the evening. Stokes sent a good ball across the face of goal but it was cleared at the final hurdle.
On 66 minutes, however, Motherwell came within inches of taking the lead again. Daley sent a powerful drive on goal but it cracked off the crossbar and went out of play.
Atajic had the ball in the back of the net on 75 minute, but after curling a delightful effort around Stewart he was ruled offside. It was an unfortunate end to some patient build-up play by Celtic.
They didn’t have long to wait, though, before their hard work paid off. Four minutes later Atajic went down inside the box under a Steven Saunders challenge and this time the referee pointed to the spot. Almost identical to Motherwell´s penalty in the first half, Twardzik dinked it straight down the middle to give his side the lead.
And to seal the victory, Atajic then struck four minutes from the end, completing a wonderful solo run with a clinical finish.
The victory moves the young Hoops a point clear at the top of the table with a game in hand.

The MSM coverage of the ‘sale’ to Norwich campaign, is reaching fever pitch without a single shred of evidence, or knowledge of firstly what Celtic, or secondly Gary Hooper intend.
If you’ve ever been to Norwich or Carrow Rd you’d feel sorrow for Gary Hooper if he’s
only that good.
Nobody, and especially Talksport who are releasing soundbites about a ‘final contract offer to Hooper being rejected by the player’ have got a clue, and even if he doesn’t sign the contract *which is an extension to his existing contract, it certainly doesn’t mean he’ll be going to Norwich.
Celtic in total control, despite media frenzy, who didn’t cover this type of story when there were two big clubs in Glasgow.
