Improving performance. Lessons from US sport

921

Following on from our discussion yesterday about adopting one or two of the techniques the enormously successful GB Olympic cycling team there are other areas where a technical advantage can be sought.

Football is awash with metrics these days.  Clubs know things about their players they never even wondered about 10 years ago, leading to more informed decisions.  It is probably no exaggeration to suggest that a club like Celtic will have some information on thousands of players.  At the top level, much of this information will be fresh in the minds of coaches and scouts, and will easily be recorded on a database, but scouting permeates through youth football.  Acquiring and assimilating information on the many hundreds of players on view each month is an information challenge.

The US sports were early to get on top of this problem.  SportsBoard is a iPad-based data capture and management app which enables coaches and scouts to record information on players (their own players and others) as they watch the game.  Data is uploaded from the iPad to a cloud-based database.  Information and comment on each player or opposing team can then easily be analysed.

The alternative would be to scour through unstructured notes without any way of controlling the up-flow of information.

The app has also been used to provide instant metrics to first team squads.  Players can get home from training, login and see how their performance was rated that day, allowing them to adjust their own target for the next session.  I spoke to the designer, Gregg Jacobs, who has received a ton of media coverage in the US over the last two years.  He told me this was about providing “more meaningful feedback”.   Take a look at the Assessment and Contact Management features, which has screenshots of the ‘soccer’ app.

So this week we’ve covered orthopaedic pillows on tour and leg heaters from the GB cycling team, as well as a scouting management and instant metrics system from US sports, all low-cost and designed to reduce risk and improve performance.

Should we do it?

  2. If Gary Hooper doesn’t want to sign a new contract then we should cash in now. If we wait until the summer when he has only 12 months left on his contract, his value will drop to around £5m-ish. If we can get £8m in this window, the sellers market window, then we should take it. Hoops has been a good player for us, has an impressive scoring rate but he is replaceable. A returning Stokes and improving Watt will score the goals to win the league and domestic cups, and the team could be strengthened with the money we receive (similar to Lennon’s signings of Hooper, Stokes, Kayal,Juarez, Ledley, Izzy in his first summer as manager funded by the McGeady sale).

If the club’s strategy is bring players in young, hungry and cheap, to develop them and sell them on at a healthy profit then now could be the time to part company. I hope he signs a new contract and stays until the summer at least, but if not he would go with the thanks and best wishes of the vast majority of the support.

Use £3m of the money to sign Russell & Mackay Steven from DU.

The first hun invasion of Manchester in 74 was particularly bad and should have sent a warning to Manchester plod when the 2008 visit loomed.

I was down there at the time. The game was played on a Saturday afternoon and as youd expect the boozed up bigots invaded the pitch, trying to get at the stretford end who dared to fly a tricolor.

As was the case at Villa park in 76, the game was cut short. North west news even reported Rangers fans rampaging through the city centre with some shops being looted…the following Monday!

And to think this was a vicar’s tea party compared to what would happen 34 years later.

If the news on hooper that’s come out is accurate (may not be) then it would appear the club have offered their maximum, negotiations seem be at a critical stage.

If the wages offered are not enough for hoops then we should really sell now. We may get around 10m for him now, maybe only up to 5m in the summer.

I’m only thinking out loud. Austin sounds good but how much would he cost? And I don’t doubt our excellent scouts have a replacement in mind in any case.

BTW, we’ll be winning trophies and playing on the biggest stage of all – the Champions League NOT the Championship!!!

Good Luck, it’s a long way back to the top!

  22. Arsène Wenger is considering making a bid for the Celtic holding midfielder Victor Wanyama in the coming days as he attempts to improve Arsenal’s hopes of qualifying for the Champions League.

The Frenchman is concerned by an imbalance in Arsenal’s midfield caused by Alex Song’s summer sale to Barcelona and is weighing up a bid for a more physically imposing figure than Mikel Arteta, Jack Wilshere or Aaron Ramsey.

Having closely monitored the progress of Wanyama in Celtic’s successful progress through the Champions League group stages, Arsenal have made the Kenya international aware that he is a strong option for the position. Though Wanyama’s performances have seen his asking price rise above £10m, the 21-year-old’s wages are comparatively low and he has refused to extend a contract with Celtic that expires in 2015.

Another option for Wenger is Mohamed Diamé. Although the Senegal international only signed for West Ham United in June, a £3.5m release clause was written into his new contract and the 25-year-old is open to a move across London.

Favourably compared with Patrick Vieira, Wanyama also has the advantage of offering cover at centre-back – another problem area for Wenger. Celtic manager Neil Lennon frequently used the Kenyan in central defence during the player’s debut campaign in Scotland. Awarded a regular starting berth in midfield this season, Wanyama has scored seven times in 32 appearances.

Manchester United, who are looking to recruit in central midfield in June, have also scouted Wanyama extensively. He also has admirers among Jose Mourinho’s recruitment staff at Real Madrid and is expected to have moved on from Celtic by next season at the latest.

  23. Why the vitriol directed at Gary Hooper?

If players weren’t free to come and go how would Celtic ever sign anyone?

Unlike Anthony Stokes at this time last year I don’t see GH mouthing off in the press.

Unlike Giorgos Samaras he doesn’t tout himself with the approach of every transfer window.

Will those having a go at GH just as enthusiastically rescind their vehemence if he is still a Celtic player come February?

My view is the board would sell the whole team tomorrow if they thought they could get away with it. And the manager.

In the tradition of Celtic fans I wish Gary Hooper well wherever he goes.

  24. Kayal33 I think Scott Brown would add to the Arsenal side but Arsene Wenger’s dogmatic resistance to alcohol debars this. Silly really when you think his nemesis and master Alex Ferguson is a successful and enthusiastic investor in vintage red.
