Improving performance. Lessons from US sport

921

Following on from our discussion yesterday about adopting one or two of the techniques the enormously successful GB Olympic cycling team there are other areas where a technical advantage can be sought.

Football is awash with metrics these days.  Clubs know things about their players they never even wondered about 10 years ago, leading to more informed decisions.  It is probably no exaggeration to suggest that a club like Celtic will have some information on thousands of players.  At the top level, much of this information will be fresh in the minds of coaches and scouts, and will easily be recorded on a database, but scouting permeates through youth football.  Acquiring and assimilating information on the many hundreds of players on view each month is an information challenge.

The US sports were early to get on top of this problem.  SportsBoard is a iPad-based data capture and management app which enables coaches and scouts to record information on players (their own players and others) as they watch the game.  Data is uploaded from the iPad to a cloud-based database.  Information and comment on each player or opposing team can then easily be analysed.

The alternative would be to scour through unstructured notes without any way of controlling the up-flow of information.

The app has also been used to provide instant metrics to first team squads.  Players can get home from training, login and see how their performance was rated that day, allowing them to adjust their own target for the next session.  I spoke to the designer, Gregg Jacobs, who has received a ton of media coverage in the US over the last two years.  He told me this was about providing “more meaningful feedback”.   Take a look at the Assessment and Contact Management features, which has screenshots of the ‘soccer’ app.

So this week we’ve covered orthopaedic pillows on tour and leg heaters from the GB cycling team, as well as a scouting management and instant metrics system from US sports, all low-cost and designed to reduce risk and improve performance.

Should we do it?

  2. Hi Kojo

Very good point about the two united players, lets see how they do in the shop window tomorrow night.

    And keep laughin’

  3. Someone posted earlier, sorry can’t remember who, that Vic is good enough to play for a Galaictico, he is imo, Real and Barca are keeping tabs on him, the media here make no bones about it, if his agent has half a brain, he should keep him well away from the epl.

Gary Hooper, seems like a lot of posters have inside info on what he will do and where he will go, I have not a clue, like most things, but he is the best english striker around at the moment imo, if he want’s to go, fair enough, he will be leaving a club that is in the top handfull in the world, if money is the driver, we can’t compete with england, if medals and winning is the goal, he will sign and the club who put him on the map will benefit down the line.

  4. Folks,

Haven’t read back but am confused at reports that Johan has mentioned we are interested in Austin!

It was only 48 hours ago that Neil was criticising the release of info on hoopers contract negotiations, stating that we do our business in private and expressing his annoyance at the details becoming public.

Why would Johan publicly declare an interest in a player of another club? If it was another club making this statement about one of our players would we not be annoyed and find it unprofessional?

Not sure if theses reports are true as do not add up.

  5. In the past, there have been players in Celtic jerseys who professed to supporting the club all their lives that haveultimately moved on to English clubs with their lure of increased earnings. Why should Gary Hooper be any different? Celtic was always going to be a stepping stone for him (as he saw it) if he proved to be successful in Glasgow.

We can weep and wail about leaving Celtic for, ahem, Norwich City but that’s the state of European football. Wee and relatively insignificant clubs down south trump Celtic. They trump Ajax, most top French clubs, a lot of Spanish and Italian clubs. The financial imbalance dictates. Why else would a player join a club whose ultimate goals must surely be to remain in a league and perhaps battle through at some point to a Capital One cup final?

Good luck to Gary if (and when) he goes. He has provided superb service. We are thankful but we will not be heartbroken. I hope his success continues to the extent that Norwich City become just another stepping stone.

Now, who wants to play upfront against Juventus?!

  6. Cant believe people jumping on msm bandwagon re Hooper

He is in my opinion best striker we have had since Henrik

He is English his family stay there so why would it be strange if he wants to return there I dont know when he intends to go back and neither does anyone else so back off the snipes and barbs

He is a Celtic player and until he leaves he deserves our support and when he goes it will be with Celtics blessing and with a substantial profit and many happy memories

  12. Good evening from a cold and wet Bergen, Norway.

I feel I have to add my tuppence worth about the Gary Hooper Talksport rumour.

I believe it’s pure fantasy from that radio station, using the oldest trick in the book by media

when they have diddley squat to go on.

I’m talking about the “a close friend says” or “a source close to ____ informs us”.

I would consider Adam Matthews a close friend of Gary’s as they holiday together when not playing football and he says Hoops can’t wait for the Juve game.

I would not think for a second that if someone was a close friend of Hoops

they would go blabbing to the press with such sensitive info.

In fact, I have just figured out who this “close friend” is…

Step forward TalkSports very own, Mr Chuckles Green (and white).

Whatever the motives are for this made up rubbish is, it has got the Celtic online community whipped up into a frenzy so has probably reached its aim as to unsettling the club and supporters.

I believe he is going nowhere until summer at the earliest, or even the following summer depending on the clubs and size of bids coming in for him.

By that time he will possibly be an England cap & Champions League winner, which will further boost his worth and help him realise a few personal ambitions whilst playing with Celtic.

I hear his contract with his agent expires after the January transfer window shuts so my GUESS is he will sign a new contract then with an agreement he can leave for the right price. Not every player who changes agent is looking for an immediate move, take Kayal for example.

Feels good to get that of my chest.

I would like to finish by offering my deepest condolences to all who have lost dear friends and loved one’s.

    Hail Hail one and all.

  13. GARY HOOPER

I wish him all the best whatever he chooses …

Yes ! We will be disappointed if he leaves …why? Because he is really decent .

£7m ? Is good money for someone with a year and a half left on his current deal … Too good to turn down imo.

    Juve game looming ?

Personally? The Italians will be fearing our clinical striker…

    But not hoops! Samaras!

Our biggest result this season was against the mighty Barcelona!

    2-1 !!! What a result…….

    But who was missing ????

    GARY HOOPER.

Fear not my friends as when our strikers move on to pastures new….

A clinical finisher usually pops up to replace him !

Lenny will have a short list from mr park!

He does have a habit of finding a gem or two!

    Hail hail

  14. skal says @00:21 “I would consider Adam Matthews a close friend of Gary’s as they holiday together when not playing football and he says Hoops can’t wait for the Juve game.”

    Great point skal.

However. Adam Matthews actually said “Everyone is looking forward to Juventus, it’s a massive game. Gary himself is looking forward to it, … ”

No point in accusing the press of sleight of phrase and then you doing the self same thing.

  15. we only ever discuss players that we’re either not interested in or have no chance of getting……fact

  16. I personally think Hoops will go and there won’t be a replacement but we’ll allow ourselves to be drawn on names as it keeps the wolves from the door as it were….

  17. CultsBhoy loves being 1st forever & ever on

On a general note, I’m very relaxed about any departure if the price is right. Vic= £10m+, Hooper£7m , Forster £9m , Sami £5m etc…and let’s face given we don’t need to sell we can be hard to deal with. The reason Im relaxed is that the team has a system that is stronger than individuals.

The reality is selling Vic ( who will go soon any way) will reap more than him staying this season is likely to bring in.

I have another specific point about Vic. He may peak quite soon. I ve seen many excellent Players of African descent excell in their early 20s due to their accelerated maturity & strength who naturally carry excess timber by their mid to late 20’s . Vic has the typical build common to those players ( Cisse, Heskey, etc). The same accelerated maturity that gives them physical advantage in their early 20s can be the cause of their decline only a few years later. It also happens to non African players but I wonder if there is a genetic element?

The same ageing process predisposes stocky sportsmen of African descent to dominate strength based sports such as boxing but can mitigate progress in others…?

Vic is no lanky Vierra type, that’s for sure..

  18. Craig Whyte @00:35 “we only ever discuss players that we’re either not interested in or have no chance of getting……fact”

WE are Celtic fans. WE can dream.

    We can you know.

    And nobody can stop us.

I’ve wanted for many years to sing

“We’re on our our way to Wembley

    We’re on ‘The Wembley Way'”

Matron: Oh! not again TSD, what is it this time? Is your porridge not white enough? Did your hamster mate with a gerbil? Did your fag not bow low enough when bringing tea to your study?

TSD: No, matron, there’s a boy in the lower 4th with dark tinted skin and another has reached the level of The Remove even though he is not of our faith and will not vote for either UKIP or the BNP. I think we are taken over Matron!

Matron: Nonsense TSD, the boy probably just went somewhere sunny on holiday and the older lad will, I am sure, have other fringe right wing nutter parties that he can choose from.

TSD: No Matron, it’s scary and I fear my nightime secrets may be discovered when the fag comes to change my bed linen in the morning. Can’t I sleep in your bed again.

Matron: You know Ampleforth frowns on that sort of thing.

TSD: But we’re away from home and miss the comforts of Mater and the footmen.

Matron: OK! You can sleep here again for just one more time. But remember you have to be up early, headmaster TSD, You have to take Assembly and lecture the boys on the dangers of multi-culturalism and the Frankenfurter School.

  22. Yep, I’m all up for the dream as well. My point is more about how we are treated by the hierarchy. I strongly believe that Hoops will be sold in this window, in fact I think we’ve seen his last game already – my problem is that we will now probably have to listen to nine days of ‘yes, we like him’ and ‘we’re trying a few different options’ etc etc when actually, if the truth be told, we’ll probably have already settled to go to war with what we have. Just my opinion but don’t be shocked if i’m right.
