Inconceivable wifi debate, Supporter statements

453

I’ve a bit of experience at deploying wifi to stadiums at sports stadiums.  The business model is straightforward:

You offer free wifi access to spectators who otherwise would have trouble getting 3G or 4G access due to the short-term convergence of thousands of other spectators.

In return you capture spectators registration details, which you can subsequently use for marketing purposes.  You can also force visitors to a landing page after the login, which can carry advertising.  Finally, you can control access to premium event-related sites, like gambling.  The venue can prohibit access to betting sites apart from their (paying) betting partner.

This technology has been around for a while but the tools and processes to commercialise it are still relatively new.

Venues across the country are already doing all of the above, but we’re only at the beginning of how sports venues engage with the phone in the hands of their in-stadium spectators.  The venues control premium content – like replays of goals or key incidents, which they can use to entice stadium visitors to register, login and view adverts.  You can view a goal reply on stadium screens, but this technology would allow you to view incident whenever you want, from whatever camera angle you want – great if you’re stuck at one end of the ground and want to see an incident in the opposite penalty area.

Eventually you will be able to order snacks or buy shirts through the same app you use to view replays.  The possibilities are endless: view Benchcam to see who is doing what in the technical area, click on your adjacent Kioskcam to see if there’s a queue before leaving your seat.

Sizing an install is a straightforward process.  You start with the capacity of the venue, then estimate what percentage you’ll get to register, then estimate how many will want to access the internet simultaneously, then estimate their average bandwidth requirement.

From that you get an estimate of what throughput your access points need (and where they are needed), what routers you need, and the leased line bandwidth.  This exercise has been done in practically every town in the country.

It’s inconceivable # 1

It’s inconceivable that the supplier and customer have not gone through this sizing procedure.  There will be email trails confirming the process.

It’s inconceivable # 2

It’s inconceivable that a customer expects 100% of their maximum population to register, login and access the internet simultaneously.  Especially so if the customer already had a stadium wifi installation and was aware of visitor login profiles.  If they did, their supplier would size accordingly, but this would have been well covered during the preliminary conversations.

It’s inconceivable # 3

The deal Newco Rangers are trying to get out of was signed under then chief executive, Charles Green.  Star witness for the plaintiff would surely be the directors from the other side who instructed the deal:

Counsel: “Mr Green, as chief executive of Rangers International did you instruct our clients to install a wifi at Ibrox allowing around 10,000 users to simultaneously access the internet?”

Case closed.

The Association, the Affiliation and the Irish Association, by some distance the three largest supporters organisations, all issued statements condemning those who use pyrotechnics at Celtic games.

It’s difficult for any group of people counted in the tens or hundreds of thousands to self-police over decades.  One of the functions which makes this possible is that when self-criticism is needed, it happens.  There was no whatabouterry in these statements, no blaming the media, just the straightforward message about what this behaviour is doing to Celtic supporters.

I don’t know if these statements will make any difference (all points were previously known), but the wellbeing of the support depends no strong voices stepping forward at the right time, especially when they can be shouted down.

The 3rd Annual Celtic Supporter’s Féile takes place in Philadelphia from 29th-31st January, including a Tommy Burns Supper for the first time.  Events are based at The Plough & Stars, in the Old City section of Philadelphia, where Celtic supporters from all over the world will gather.

There’s live music and radio shows, a book launch and a Q&A with Supporters Liason Officer, John Paul Taylor.  $5 from each ticket also goes to the Foundation.

Book tickets for the Tommy Burns Supper here.  If you need accommodation, special rates are available at the Wyndham Philadelphia Historic District with passcode: Celtic Group.

  1. Good morning CQN

Caught up with the FACS petition to the Scottish parliament requesting a review of the OB act

Outstanding work by Janette Findlay and Paul Quigley on behalf of FAC at the Scottish Parliament, having previously spent a day with FAC at Holyrood not in the least surprised at the excellent intelligent case that was presented, we are fortunate in the Celtic community to have such pro active individuals who do a lot more than empty the contents of a limited intellect on CQN every day

As for Mr McAskill i concur wholeheartedly with this FAC message

    Message for McAskill

FAC will comment on the substantive issues arising from today’s meeting once we have had the opportunity to reflect on it. However I would like to say one thing to the former Justice Minister. Bigger men than you have had a go at me, but your attempt today to compromise the employment opportunities and personal safety of my young colleague by your cynical attempt to smear him by association truly disgusted me. The fact that his intelligence and integrity so obviously outweighs your own means that we will be hearing good things about him long after you and your disgraceful behaviour have faded from public memory. Reflect on that.

Well, a man of principle indeed, I hope that you feel mighty lofty up there on that high horse. I noted that Hamilton Tim called you out yesterday when you had your usual cheap shot at the Celtic Trust, via St Stivs, The Exiled Tim called you out about lecturing folks on immigration yesterday too. And yes, it is personal when you are going head to head with someone on a blog, of course it’s personal.

You continually act as agent provocateur, dropping in little grenades and then retreating with, “I never brought it up, I’m only commenting on it”. Like I said last night, it’s your MO and it runs to bagging Celtic fans for celebrating their Irishness.

Final word from me, you and I will probably never agree politically but at least I’ll be happy when I look in the mirror each morning, ugly site that it is.

    Hail Hail

More personal slurs. No mention of the issues that were discussed.

    Is that all you got?

    I criticised Obama .

    Others raised immigration .Not me.

“I never brought it up, I’m only commenting on it”.

    Now that`s absolutely true.

    Why don`t you check back?

St.Stivs mentioned “Jinty”.Who could that be?

“bagging Celtic fans for celebrating their Irishness.”

    Nonsense.

Finally………………” ugly site that it is “……….C.Q.N.???????

    Final word ?

I, for one, am really glad to see you posting my friend.

MacAskill made deliberate attempts to goad and bully, it merely aped in parliament how he’d behaved as Justice Minister.

On a day when many posters were highlighting the excellent contribution by Jeanette at Holyrood, including some who aren’t particularly fond of her, I did think it a cheap shot to have a go at the Celtic Trust in such a contrived manner.

Anyway, we’ve got snow, bet you’ve no! :-)

The shambolic and disgraceful display by McAskill should have been meat and drink to opponents of the SNP.

    Particularly in the media.

That’s why I find it so disturbing that the likes of The Daily Record has ignored it,and the OBaF Act in general. Easy sticks with which to beat the SNP,yet they pass it up.

Frankly that aligns pretty much with NEGANON’s theory about institutional racism. They ignore the easy target in favour of their preferred one.

Let me add my congratulations to yourself and the Trust.

  9. Good evening friends from a clearish skied, dry and frosty East Kilbride. One more sleep then we get to see The Champions play. Again.

  10. Macjay

JF was at Parliament as a member of FAC.

Only you know why you felt the need to mention the Trust.

The rest of us can only guess.

    Enjoy the pictures.

  11. Let me ask this – supposing on Ronny’s recruitment, he had, backed by the board, come out and said

“I have been brought here on a specific mission to overhaul the club’s policy in the transfer market and to develop a new style of play with a young and hungry squad. This will take some time and there will be some mistakes and bad judgement calls along the way, however our outlook and determination will not waver until we get it right.

The main and non-negotiable goals will be winning of the title each year and ensuring that the club stays financially strong – of course we will look to be successful in ALL we do. For a club of our limited resources the recruitment of the right players will always be difficult in the current state of the football world. We will do our utmost to obtain the best value, predominately young players and will look to combine them with an increasing number coming through from our Youth Development Academy.”

Would we have backed him and would we still be backing him now? – in my opinion the answer is a resounding YES.

What has ‘muddied the water, appears to me to be all the misjudged bravado surrounding the ‘Ronny Roar’ and the statements on winning the ‘treble’ last year.

Of course the deepest disappointment was the inability to qualify for the CL on two occasions, from seemingly winnable positions – this failure MUST be laid at the door of the manager and the players, NOT the board – if we had seen the ties against Maribor and Malmo out, as we should, and could have done, the current picture would be much rosier.

In my opinion, Ronny must ‘clear the mist’ in this transfer window – get rid of the excess and bring in a good central defender and striker on permanent deals. He MUST ‘kick-on’ from here on in and show real progress and direction for the rest of the season.

Of course the ‘treble’ would be nice, however as we know from last season, a dodgy decision in one game can change the whole picture.

If Ronny, over the next six months, demonstrates that he is ‘pulling the strings together’ and that there is a clear an coherent plan going forward, he will have the full backing of the support – but it has to start ‘gelling’ NOW.

  12. Morning bhoys and ghirls thanks for all the good wishes re Nathan Sean.

As regards Jeanette Finlay I will tell you about my experience with this lady.

As you may remember a couple of years ago my son Sean was charged under the OBaF act. Now within a couple of days of this happening Jeanette got in touch with my son and arranged for a meeting with the foremost lawyer in fighting this act. Jeanette Finlay did not know my son or me. What she did know was that an injustice had happened to a football fan with consequences that could impact on his career and leave him with a criminal record.

Thankfully Sean was cleared of all charges after 18 months and 3 court appearances.

This lady never asked for anything. Never asked my son to join anything. She called my son to congratulate him on being cleared and wished him well in his studies and life.

Anyway what I am saying is to me the lady is an outstanding human being and a person to whom I feel embodies everything good about Celtic fans.

Scullybhoy: I’ve been coming to Scotland, mainly Glasgow for more than twenty years. When the horribles existed many neutrals treated Celtic fans with scepticism and I witnessed outright hostility directed at Celtic supporters from the Huns. That changed in 2012. Glasgow is a much more pleasant place to visit now on match days, imo. The community in Stranraer gave a warm and genuinely friendly welcome to Celtic supporters on Sunday – there wasn’t a hint of hostility anywhere. Long may it continue.

    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Again, nice to hear. Living in the North of Ireland means that most of my friends and acquaintances are from a (C)catholic / (N)nationalist background. Very few now support Celtic, apart from my local CSC of course. They tend to follow MU or Liverpool. They laugh at the quality of football in Scotland and assume that I follow Celtic because I am a bigot, they cannot see any other reason to go and watch Celtic. I am very conscious of the need to promote the good image of Celtic supporters so I appreciate your comments.

Frankly I found this post depressing. Not the poster, but the content.

Is this what we have become. ? Is what others really think of us.?

If there was ever a reason for sticking to Celtic songs, then this is it. Obviously it is not good enough to say we are an all inclusive club, we must demonstrate it.

Most of us on here have all sung Songs that perhaps have no place at football games, but the above post is a game changer for me.

Do we want to be seen as a modern football club, or do we want to be what the post above describes.

    Wow. Eye opener for me.

    ———————————————————————————————————————————————————

The Truss are indeed a force for good – their OWN good, and if that is to that detriment of Celtic FC, then so be it.

They are a rag-bag of self-promoting loudmouths, full of their own self-importance, spending their time dreaming up their next self-publicising ‘wheeze’ and riding on the back of the Celtic name.

They are politically motivated and are as beneficial to Celtic as the flare-throwing ****holes that latch on to the club and claim to be supporters.

  15. Now let’s get one thing straight here, I was the very first one in here to comment on how well both the FAC members acted, and I applauded them both in my post, and also ripped McCaskill a new one.

So let’s get to the spin, Jeanette Findlay is no mug, and no body’s fool, as I said I thought she came out of the discussion with massive pluses, but she has two hats and contradicts her self, at that meeting, she was calm, collective, and listenable .

Her grand standing and drama queen acts at CFC AGMs is way over the top and she gets away with it, why you ask? Because she’s in a safe house, and knows she has backing, I E the CT members in the background shouting shame shame every time she makes a point, we never heard that yesterday? Oh no.

McCaskill the bully (and he was and still thinks he is, but he’s a busted flush) well he was no different than Jeanette was with Mr Livingstone at two CFC AGMs, so let’s be clear on this, the former Jeanette cuts the mustard for me, the latter cuts the cheese, what I will say is she plays the game well, and I think she would get more results if she played the diplomat more than the aggressor as she did the other night, but that’s only my opinion, like everyone is entitled too, so ffs stop grabbing the moral high ground on people’s opinions because they are not in your Wee gang.

  16. Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession on

    Fred..,

I very much doubt he would get the backing you claim.

In fact I expect many would have walked away safe in the knowledge that they were expected to pay top dollar for reduced quality and the boards acceptance that the Celtic board no longer believe we are a big club who should be striving for champions league football year on year.

Now its all well and nice being noble about going forward with reduced expectations but the simple fact is there is no guarantee that the latest experiment by the board is going to work, we could be downsizing and still fail, however this appears to be a major gamble many board and their locktuggers are willing to take.

Constant bleating about the lack of competition and financial rewards when we are deliberately reducing our chances and expectations of making it to the only competition that guarantee’s both is where we are and it shows that the board are only too willing to gamble with the well being of the club, however they are gambling on the expectation of loosing. and preparing to loose is to expecting to loose.

That’s no the Celtic way I was brought up with.
