If you were lucky enough, like me, to enjoy a long Christmas holiday, I hope you had a good one. I’m sure few of us are delighted to be back at it today but there’s an indisputable mood on the blog for bringing in the New. A fresh start is needed and fortunately we’re at the start of the transfer window.
For Celtic most attention will be directed towards recruiting a striker who is capable of doing the business in the Champions League, not to overlook the important point of doing the business in Champions League qualifiers. 20-year-old Icelandic striker, Holmbert Fridjobsson, finally joins the club this month but although we’ll hopefully see plenty of the player this month he is surely considered ‘one for the future’.
One prolific striker does not solve all of Celtic’s issues, however. The club remains acutely dependent on Kris Commons’ creativity (as well as goal scoring), which will become increasingly less-effective as opponents setup to inhibit him. He needs a foil.
Since the annihilation in Barcelona Celtic have offered greater protection from midfield but with both full backs encouraged to overlap the midfield anchor role, previously occupied by Wanyama, becomes crucially important. It also offers support to the strategy of allowing Commons a free role as an attacking midfielder.
Over the break, Archie MacPherson, Scotland’s greatest ever broadcaster, wrote an article for Celtic Quick News comparing two of Scotland’s greatest ever managers. These debates are, of course, subjective, but the article provides a few objective points for consideration. Archie has a totally unique range to deal with this question and is in no doubt as to who the master was. Look out for the article next week, you’ll enjoy it – no guessing now.

Not sure but the Carruth Cup is what may be the primary school equivalent.
It is played annually amongst all members of the Glasgow Catholic Schools FA.
What actually happened to the blog ?

Yeah, just a few weeks before that they were purring over Dundee Utds Performances with their stylish football from their young squad blah blah, whilst ignoring our two good wins at Swinecastle and Fir Park. Whoever is on the up will get their plaudits, as long as its not us,,,

Eusabio. He brought the finest save I have ever seen a goalkeeper make (in the flesh; I guess that the likes of the Banks/Pele save is still the gold standard). It was the away leg of the 69-70 European Cup where we lost 3-0 to Benfica. Eusabio hit the ball from what seemed the halfway line, I don’t know how John Fallon (yes, that John Fallon) managed to cover the ground to get it. A truly fabulous save, and a great if by now dim memory. Of course, we had to wait until breakfast next morning to know who had gone through. Others who were there also rate it as a fabulous save, I remember Davie Hay writing about it somewhere.

Big JF will gladly accept a brandy shandy as a token of your appreciation ;)
Great to have the site back up and running , dont post often but need my CQN fix daily – been betting Celtic minus 3 & 4 away from home and although I collected @ 11/2 one more goal would have landed the 14/1 too …. unlucky to say the least but it’s coming soon .

Eusebio was a class act as a player and a man. He recognised good footballers wherever he played.
That Benfica team with Coluna, Simoes, and Torres was a great team. I cannot remember any of their defenders though.
Eusebio should make everybody’s top 10 of post war footballers.
RIP The Black Pearl

thank god for forums like this
Alex Thomson in trying to bring out that nastiness does not depend on what colour of scarf you wear to be a problem, committed what some will see as the unforgiveable sin of getting the balance so wrong that it became the issue rather than the original point.
Professionally that is not like him but it is what can happen if you are outside the broad culture you are delivering the message to.
He is better at reporting on footbal governance and if he does return to that subject and pick up on it again some, including myself, would forgive him.
Where wad CQN when I needed it???
Was dying to share this peach at full time….
‘And on this cold and wet paisley day celtic will now be looking to turkey…’
‘Turkey?’ Says my better half….’how do they know what they ‘ll be eating after the match….. And I’d have thought they’d be sick of that by now….’
Laugh??!! I was like an ad for Tena Ladies!!!!!!

CQN Facebook is a refuge on days like that, mostly because CowieBhoy and PaddyBhoy1888 don’t do Facebook:-)

Thanks…..is it a bhun server ?…hehe
I think big Virgil could partner any of the top epl teams best defender , hopefully we can hold onto this boy for a few seasons at least , Foster again yesterday flapping at at ball , he was being challenged by a guy 2foot smaller wtf , if we scored the goals in our last 3games we would’nt have been bitching so much ,as in I don’t think there was much difference in our play , anyhow another 3points in the bag , let’s see what unfolds in the window .

Thomson has fallen into that old Scottish habit that if you criticise the Hun then at some point you must balance it up by including us.
What possessed him to write such nonsense I’ll never know. It’s inaccurate and absurd and I can only assume that he’s seeking attention.
To compare the Celtic support with an organised gang of violent thugs is unforgivable I’m my eyes.
The new ‘Go Compare’ TV ad really gets on my t*ts!

Having your name included at the bottom of a page in the CQN annual isn’t a big deal and doesn’t matter to me.
*For the 4th time, starts at the beginning and methodically flicks through every page cursing all those guys who got double mentions*

So I am not alone then :)
Oh dear, SSN reporting that the flight to Turkey was cancelled today but nobody told Biton, Forrest and Lustig who all turned up at the airport.
Belatedly, due to technical issues…

Reminds me of a business trip a few years ago … turned up at Glasgow airport to check in
Woman says im too early
I said ” yeah but better early than late”
Mrs BA ” True but no need to be 26hrs early sir”
The walk of shame out the door :(
We are back! All’s well with the world again!

I just had an email from the ASA, basically saying, drop it, we will take no further action and will enter into no further discussion on the matter.
In other words, shut, we are the peepul.

Had to replace CQN with twitter yesterday.
Alex, Phil, and Angela all happy with comparing the current Celtic support with the Millwall army of thugs who caused havoc over decades, including full-blown riots, stabbings, and numerous other violent altercations.
With friends like these……
I used to have a lot of respect for all three, I don’t have any for any if them anymore. One for the article in question, 2/3 of which was quite good, and the other two for their continued support of it.
There are issues running through the support that need resolved but with the SMSM falling over themselves to put the boot in the last thing we need is the same from our so called own.
A comparison of the current Celtic support with that of Millwall in the 1970’s is the most ridiculous comparisons I have ever heard
Just to be clear, online abuse of Miss Haggerty, or anyone else for that matter, is wrong, just wrong and I thought we were above that.
Hail Hail

Honestly, that is your considered opinion????????

I have a theory about Thommo’s blog (and like most of my theories it’s errant nonsense).
I reckon he was told by his editor he was starting to look one-sided and he had to balance things up. “Not possible” says Thommo, “it really is that one-sided”. “JUST DO IT”. “OK then” says Alex and thus we get a fictitious tale.
It’s the only plausible explanation.

His war correspondence is excellent and I don’t doubt his skills as a journalist but if he’s too busy to research a story properly (as appears to have been the case here) then he shouldn’t bother publishing.
